National Survey: Workers at Large Companies Report Highest Level of Extreme Job Dissatisfaction

National Survey: Workers at Large Companies Report Highest Level of Extreme Job Dissatisfaction

12th Annual "Attitudes in the American Workplace" Poll by Harris Interactive® for The Marlin Company finds employees in small - size companies are more likely to be satisfied with their jobs.

North Haven, CT (PRWEB) September 12, 2006

Job seekers: if you desire a personal life, don't want to be unhappy on the job or treated unfairly, you're more likely to find all these qualities at small-sized companies than at large firms, according to a new national survey. If all you care about is money, however, you're more likely to command a high salary at a large company.

A new national survey has found that only 28% of US workers at large companies (1001+ employees) (*1) are strongly satisfied with their job compared to 41% of workers at small companies. (1-100 employees). (*2)

The survey conducted by Harris Interactive® for The Marlin Company (www. themarlincompany. com), the workplace communications experts, also found that 46% of workers at large companies were likely to agree that the job often interferes with personal and family needs compared to 31% of employees at small companies. (*3)

When it comes to annual income, however, employees at larger companies were likely to be better off. While 17% of employees at large companies reported an annual personal income before taxes of $100,000 or more, only 5% of workers at small companies reported earning that much.

Base: All Respondents

% strongly disagree that not particularly satisfied with job:

Small company (1-100) -- 41%

Large (1001+) -- 28%

% Annual income before taxes of $100k or more:

Small company (1-100) -- 5%

Large (1001+) -- 17%

% agree job often interferes with personal and family needs:

Small company (1-100) -- 31%

Large (1001+) -- 46%

These are some of the results of The Marlin Company's 12th Annual "Attitudes in the American Workplace" survey of 751 U. S. workers 18 and older. The survey was conducted in May and June 2006 with a sampling error for the overall results of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

The survey also found that workers at small companies are least likely to think they are treated unfairly at work with 55% strongly disagreeing that they are treated unfairly compared to 44% at medium-size companies and 40% at large firms.

"While it is tempting to take a job offer from a large company which often can pay a higher salary and provide more resources than a smaller company, working for the little guy also has its plusses," said Frank Kenna III, president of The Marlin Company, which improves employee morale, performance and productivity through innovative communication programs that reach all employees. "Smaller companies often give employees more responsibility from the start, are less politicized and less bureaucratic."

Large and mid-size companies have advantages for employees when it comes to providing information or resources to help employees eat right, exercise and get regular medical care. While 64% of employees at mid-size firms and 75% at large companies say their employer provides a great deal or moderate amount of such information or resources, only 42% of workers at small companies say their employer does so.

However, the resources and information may not necessarily lead to employees taking care of their health. While 73% of employees at small companies said the average employee in his or her company takes care of his or her health, 65% of employees in medium-size companies said the average employee took care of his or her health and 70% of employees in large companies also indicated the same.

The survey also found that employees at small and mid-size companies are more likely to have most of their social support network at work. While 22% of employees at small firms and 20% of employees at mid size companies said that the majority of their social support network is at work, just 9% of employees at large firms said this was the case.

About the Survey

Harris Interactive® conducted the telephone survey in the U. S. on behalf of The Marlin Company between May 30 and June 15, 2006 among 751 U. S. adults ages 18 or older who are employed. Figures for age, race/ethnicity, education, income, and region were weighted, where necessary, to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. With a pure probability sample of 751, one could say with a ninety-five percent probability that the overall results have a sampling error of +/-3.6 percentage points. Sampling error for subsamples would be higher and would vary. However that does not take other sources of error into account. This survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Footnotes:

(1) Caution should be exercised when interpreting these results due to small base sizes (N = 96 for "Large Companies").

(2) Respondents were asked to rate their level of agreement on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being strongly disagree and 10 being strongly agree. This finding is based on the percentage of respondents who selected 1.

(3) Respondents were asked to rate their level of agreement on a scale of 1-10, with 1 being strongly disagree and 10 being strongly agree. This finding is based on the net percentage of respondents who selected 6-10.

Innovative LIFE Program Transforms Children with Neurological Disorders from Disabled to 'Abled'

Innovative LIFE Program Transforms Children with Neurological Disorders from Disabled to 'Abled'

A new program developed by Health in Motion Rehabilitation clinic in Toronto is helping children with neurological disorders become independent in their daily lives. The program, called Learning Independent Functions for Everyday -- or LIFE for short -- has successfully treated young patients who had been diagnosed with a neurological disorder and told they would be disabled for life. After a few weeks of LIFE treatment, these children went from being unable to do simple things -- such as sit up, stand or walk -- to being able to do everyday activities with little or no assistance.

Toronto (PRWEB) December 2, 2009 –

His approach is controversial in some circles and difficult for some parents to embrace. But Natan Gendelman (http://healthinmotionrehab. com/director-at-health-in-motion-rehab. php), an osteopathy manual practitioner and kinesiologist, and director of Health in Motion Rehabilitation (http://healthinmotionrehab. com) clinic in Toronto, has had such success treating children with neurological disorders and injuries that patients are now coming to him from as far as Europe and Asia.

Gendelman has developed a uniquely innovative treatment program called Learning Independent Functions for Everyday – or LIFE for short -- which takes a two-pronged approach to treating patients with conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or brain injuries. Instead of the exercise-based approaches used in conventional physiotherapy, Gendelman teaches patients how to perform everyday tasks – such as sitting, walking, eating or getting dressed – by breaking down these actions and imprinting them sequentially into patients’ minds and bodies.

At the same time, Gendelman’s LIFE program addresses the social and psychological aspects of a disability or disorder by breaking the often well-entrenched patterns of dependency that patients tend to have on the people around them.

“This can be very hard for families, especially for parents who are used to doing everything for their child,” says Gendelman, whose clinic offers a range of services that includes massage therapy, functional rehabilitation, speech language therapy, and homeopathy. “But often people don’t realize that by treating their child as disabled, they are reinforcing the child’s self-image as a a person who cannot do things independently.”

After just a few months of intensive LIFE treatment with Gendelman, children who were medically assessed as disabled for life have improved to the point that they can perform everyday tasks – such as sitting, walking, eating or getting dressed –with little or no assistance. In some cases, the children were in a near-vegetative state when they first came to Gendelman’s practice, and were expected by their doctors to remain helpless and bedridden for the rest of their lives.

“I’m not performing miracles,” explains Gendelman, who was an elite boxer and member of the National Team of the Russian Federation in the 1980s. “But I strongly believe that everyone is ‘abled’ and that no one is disabled.”

Gendelman’s approach was influenced largely by his own experiences. After he was seriously injured in 1986 while fighting in Afghanistan for the Russian Army, Gendelman was told by doctors that he would need a walking cane for the rest of his life. But with the help of a local healer in a Dungan village near the Chinese border, Gendelman recovered in three months and was soon walking on his own – and without a cane.

After this life-changing experience, Gendelman decided to pursue a career as a healer. He studied at the Physical Culture and Sports College at St. Petersburg, and later on at the faculty of remedial gymnastics at St. Petersburg’s Herzen Pedagogical University before moving to Israel, where he enrolled in a physiotherapy program and worked for seven years in various hospitals and clinics in Jerusalem. After moving to Canada in 1997, Gendelman became certified as an osteopathy manual practitioner and Kinesiologist. In 2001, he opened Health in Motion (http://healthinmotionrehab. com), a multidisciplinary clinic with a team of experienced and certified specialists.

To schedule an interview Gendelman about the LIFE program, please contact Health in Motion (http://healthinmotionrehab. com) at 416 250 1904. Or email Gendelman directly at natan at healthrehab dot ca. If you wish, Gendelman will also be happy to write an article about this subject. Samples of his writing are available upon request.

What does the high incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease in the Black community have to do with who runs and gets elected to office? What does drinking at least eight glasses of water a day have to do with domestic violence, child abuse, and street crime in the Black community? Intrigued? Good, because during National Women’s Health and Fitness Week. the Black Women’s Health and Healing Conference & Festival 2006 will be making the connection between the choices we make about food, exercise and relationships, and our ability and willingness to take control of our lives and our community.

Presented by the Muhsana Center for Health and Healing, the co-organizers decided to put on this conference because “everyday they experience and see a disconnect between the health information presented to communities of color and how (if ever) the information is used. Despite extensive information available, African Americans are still dying and falling ill in disproportionate numbers.

In Oakland and Alameda County:

African Americans had a rate of 1,192.8 deaths per 100,000, twice the rate for Asians or Latinos (580.9 and 582.4, respectively) and 40% higher than the rate for the White population (851.8).  African Americans bear the greatest burden of chronic diseases for almost all chronic disease indicators examined except for breast cancer incidence and mortality, where the White population has the highest rates.  African Americans comprise the highest rate of hospitalizations for mental disorders, which include anxiety, depression and phobias  African Americans have the worst birth outcomes: they have the highest rates of infant mortality and low birth weight.  African Americans and residents of East Oakland, and parts of North and West Oakland, have the highest rates of all-cause mortality in Oakland.

Featured speakers for this dynamic and life changing event will include motivational speaker Dr. Jewel Diamond Taylor, author of Too Blessed to Be Stressed, Dr. Phil Valentine and Dr. Nalani ND and to lead the 2-day Young Women’s Forum; Niambi Jaha-Echols, author of Project Butterfly and one of Essence magazines 25 women to watch. 20 other local and national women will present over 29 topics relevant to African American women’s health, including Maria Dowd, creator of the popular African American Women on Tour and Ruth King, author of Healing Rage.

The weekend will feature a combination of informative workshops, music, physical exercise workout sessions, healthy food prep classes, diagnostic testing, on-site massage, chiropractic and acupuncture, local entertainment, art and a 2-day young women’s forum discussing health issues especially for young women 13-25 years of age.

The first Black Women’s Health and Healing Conference was held in Richmond, California in September of 2004. Participants described the conference as “… one of the happiest experiences or moments in my life”…” phenomenal”… “an unforgettable experience”…” that truly transformed my life”

This event is open to the public. Early bird registration begins June 28, 2006 and a limited number of full and partial scholarships will be available!

To date, funders and sponsors include The California Endowment, Family Independence Initiative, United Way of the Bay Area, The California Wellness Foundation, Naked Juice and the Port of Oakland.
