Annual Event To Focus on Community-based Emergency Communications

Community-based emergency communications will be a major focus of Ham-Com 2004, June 18-19, 2004 at the Arlington Convention Center. Amateur Radio operators, emergency communications managers and government officials from all over Texas will attend. Key topics covered by speakers and workshops at the event include education, public service and Amateur RadioÂs role as a community-based emergency communications resource for agencies including the National Weather Service, American Red Cross, Texas Department of Health and Department of Homeland Security. There are over 43,000 FCC-licensed Amateur Radio operators in Texas. A special information exchange between the Texas Department of Health and the American Radio Relay LeagueÂs (ARRL) North Texas Section will take place on Friday, June 18, 2004 from 1:00-4:00 p. m.
The two-day event features speakers from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), National Weather Service, news media and communications interest groups. There are over 100 hours of speakers, workshops and activities on the schedule plus an innovative one-day Radio Merit Badge session for area Boy Scouts.
The American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national organization for Amateur Radio, is playing a prominent role in Ham-Com 2004. Amateur Radio emphasizes lifetime learning through community service, development of communication and technology skills, knowledge of geography, science and the global environment, both political and cultural.
Operating continuously since 1978, Ham-Com is organized and managed by area volunteers. As many as 5,000 people are expected to attend, making it one of the largest and most successful Amateur Radio gatherings in the United States.
