Nature Publishing Group To Hold Public Forums in China
Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is proud to announce that it will hold two public forums in China in November 2004 to celebrate the publication on November 18th 2004 of a special Chinese language supplement in Nature, “China Voices II: Keeping pace with change”.

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is proud to announce that it will hold two public forums in China in November 2004 to celebrate the publication on November 18th 2004 of a special Chinese language supplement in Nature, “China Voices II: Keeping pace with change”.
The two forums, which will be open to the Chinese scientific community, will take place in Shanghai, on November 22nd, and in Shenzhen the following day on November 23rd. The Shanghai meeting is being held with the cooperation of the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS, and the Shenzhen event is held in cooperation with the Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University and the University Town of Shenzhen. Both forums will be known as the “Nature China Voices Forum”.
The two events will feature talks by leading scientists of Chinese origin discussing the challenges facing the scientific community in China to produce world-class research. Speakers will include Dr. David Ho from the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, who will speak about the challenge China faces dealing with major microbiol threats; Dr. Mu-ming Poo, of the Institute of Neuroscience, Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences, who will talk on the cross cultural issues involved in establishing new research institutes in China; Dr. Pei Gang, President, Shanghai Institutes of Biological Science, who will speak on mid-tolong term science planning and development in China; Dr. Bruce Lahn, of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, University of Chicago, who will speak on how China can utilize its limited financial and human resources to establish international leadership in niche areas; and Dr. RuiPing Xiao, Laboratory of Cardiovascular Science, National Institutes of Health who will speak on ChinaÂ’s potential to advance in translational biomedical research. Dr. Philip Campbell, NatureÂ’s Editor-in-Chief, will open the two events.
China Voices II: Keeping pace with change is the second supplement in a series of Chinese language supplements published by NPG. The first, “China Voices”, was published on December 18th 2003, and explored China’s scientific prowess and potential from the point of view of Chinese-born scientists working in the West. China Voices II: Keeping pace with change further develops these themes, expressing the views of Chinese scientists actually working in China.

Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS) was founded in July of 1999, consisting of eight former biological research institutes under the jurisdiction of the Shanghai Branch, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and conducts basic studies in the frontier of life science mainly related to human health and biomedical research.
The Graduate School at Shenzhen, Tsinghua University, was jointly founded in 2001 by Tsinghua University and Shenzhen Municipal Government. It is the second campus of Tsinghua University and aims at the same goal for excellence as the main campus. Its primary mission is to train top level professionals of leadership quality with a wide-ranging knowledge and skills. It will also serve the regional economy by carrying on original and interdisciplinary researches in frontier areas and facilitating technology transfer to industry.
University Town of Shenzhen (UTSZ) was founded by the Shenzhen Municipal Government in 2001. It is designed to attract top universities from home and abroad to extend their high level teaching and research to Shenzhen. Tsinghua University, Beijing University and Harbin Institute of Technology have already set up graduate schools in UTSZ. Nankai University is also setting up a college on financial engineering. The current campus occupies 1.45 square meters area and is capable of hosting up to ten thousands full-time students.
