Senate Sponsors a Resolution Supporting the Goals and Ideals of a “National Life Insurance Awareness Month”

Senate Sponsors a Resolution Supporting the Goals and Ideals of a “National Life Insurance Awareness Month”

"National Life Insurance Awareness Month" resolution sponsored by Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)will promote Life Insurance as a way to help family financial security for U. S. residents.

Mission Viejo, CA (PRWEB) May 25, 2006

Finally an issue that both parties can agree on, Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) have introduced a resolution supporting Life Insurance Awareness Month on April 27th, 2006. Senate Resolution 448 seeks to designate September 2006 as Life Insurance Awareness Month. This September will mark the third anniversary, previously honored in 18 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to receiving formal recognition by the Congress annually, more than half of the nation’s governors and President Bush have signed proclamations or sent supportive letters on behalf of life insurance awareness.

Why life insurance awareness? Life insurance is a foundation of financial security for our nation’s families. Nearly 70 million Americans lack life insurance coverage, and these proclamations, resolutions and the like help to focus attention on the issue. Two industry groups, LIFE (The Life and Health Insurance Foundation) and NAIFA (the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors) have been at the forefront of this program. It is an industry-wide initiative to help raise public awareness about the importance of life insurance and to encourage consumers to evaluate their own life insurance policies.

“People often purchase their life insurance policies and believe their coverage will be sufficient regardless of the life changes they go through.” Said Spectrum Direct CEO Christopher Snyder, “Having a Life Insurance Awareness Month with support from Federal and State governments is a good way to remind those who don’t currently own insurance that they are missing an important part of their financial strategy. “ And those people who have already purchased life insurance should review their coverage in light of their current situation. “When our State and Federal Governments support a special resolution for like Life Insurance Awareness Month they are basically telling their constituents how important it is for them to assume financial responsibility and that buying life insurance is a key step towards the goal of having financial security for your family,” added Snyder.

What stops people from purchasing life insurance? Often it is too complicated or takes too long to secure needed coverage. 99% of all life insurance policies require that the buyer meet with an agent at least once and take a medical exam. Many prospective buyers are looking for an easier way to purchase their needed coverage, which is something Mr. Snyder can help them with. “We found a large portion of the uninsured population really wants to get coverage, but they don’t want to meet with an agent or take a medical exam. With that in mind we offer immediate term life coverage online with no agent and no medical exam.”

Spectrum Direct developed two websites that offer no medical and no agent term life insurance, and both sites allow the insurance shopper to apply, get approved and print out their in-force term life insurance policy in under 15 minutes. These sites, http://www. AmericanLifeDirect. com (http://www. AmericanLifeDirect. com) and www. LibertyDirect. com are top sellers of e-commerce life insurance in the United States. So heed the advice of your Senators, Governors and President – if you don’t have any life insurance, you’re not protecting your family’s financial future. These websites will help to ensure their stability. If you already have life insurance, remember to review it annually to be sure your coverage really fits your current needs.

The Web Project visits The House of Good Health in Malawi

The Web Project visits The House of Good Health in Malawi

The Web Project sponsors HIV charity in Malawi Africa

(PRWEB) December 24, 2008

Having decided to help support a charitable cause it didn't take long for The Web Project (http://www. thewebproject. co. uk/sponsor. htm) to find The House of Good Health in Senga Bay, Malawi. Known locally as Nyumba Ya Thanzi, the charity helps children with HIV to manage their disease by providing financial, nutritional, and emotional support. Nick Maynard from The Web Project went to Malawi to find out more.

"Even before arriving at the Nutrition Centre I was confident that we had found the right charity to support" begins Nick. "As we approached the infectious clatter of children enjoying their childhood grew ever louder". Nick then met with Project Manager Richard Moyo who explained more about the unique philosophy underpinning The House of Good Health.

"Firstly there are no administration costs; so that you know every penny you give goes to helping the children you see here" begins Richard "I'm from the Senga Bay area, and know how things work, so we can make a real difference." And walking around the Nutrition Centre it's easy to see that The House of Good Health is already making a real difference.

The Nutrition Centre provides help with transport to the hospital and encourages HIV positive parents to take their children for tests. A balanced diet is provided (and a stress-free environment) to help boost the children's immune systems; so they can better fight their disease. Antiretroviral drugs are free in Malawi and carefully administered by The House of Good Health.

In just one year, the Nutrition Centre has grown to include: a schoolhouse, a kitchen and a generous outdoor courtyard. Richard is already planning a shower bloc and market garden where vegetables can be grown. After a long afternoon chatting with Richard and playing with the children, Nick headed back to his hotel, committed to raising further funds for The House of Good Health.

Parents. com Offers Professional Photography Tips for Taking Winning Pregnant Belly Pictures for Best Baby Bump contest

Parents. com Offers Professional Photography Tips for Taking Winning Pregnant Belly Pictures for Best Baby Bump contest

Five secrets for taking great pregnant belly photos - from little baby bumps to big pregnant bellies - and expert advice from maternity photographers on the best poses.

New York, NY (PRWEB) August 20, 2008

Parents. com, the online home of American Baby, Family Circle, and Parents magazine, today offered five professional photography tips for taking winning pregnant belly pictures to upload to its Best Baby Bump Contest (http://www. parents. com/app/sharemy/category. jsp? categoryId=cat15940001). In addition to sharing five secrets for taking great pregnant belly photos - from little baby bumps to big pregnant bellies - Parents. com also shared advice from top maternity photographers on the best poses.

Liz Zack, Executive Editor of Parents. com, says, "We collected top tips from the pros on how to take the very best pregnant belly pics. In addition to gathering the 5 secrets to beautiful pregnant belly photos, we also polled our expert maternity photographers about their favorite poses."

The Best Baby Bump Contest (http://www. parents. com/app/sharemy/category. jsp? categoryId=cat15940001) started June 27, 2008, and ends September 30, 2008. Photos must be. jpeg or. bmp image formats and cannot exceed 3 MB. Photos must be original, unpublished and may not have won any prize or award. Entries must be received at http://www. parents. com/bump-contest (http://www. parents. com/bump-contest) by 11:59 p. m., E. T., on September 30, 2008.

Here are 5 secrets to beautiful pregnant belly photos:

1. Wait until you're big, but not too big:
You want your belly to be big and beautiful, but you don't want it to be so large that posing and holding different positions for any length of time becomes taxing. Professional photographer Mariah Milan Dagupion suggests taking photos right around 30 weeks. That's when your belly gets really round, she says, but it's not too heavy yet. Of course each pregnancy and pregnant belly is different so use your own stamina as a guide.

2. Avoid background clutter:
Just like professional photographers, style your backdrop. So think about what's behind you. When choosing your location, avoid standing in front of a messy living room - or worse, a messy bathroom. Instead, lie mermaid-style on a solid-color couch or tape some ironed white sheets to the wall and--voila--an instant studio backdrop. Or change things up and step outside: Pick a tranquil spot in your backyard or nearby park or beach to set up camp. We love the leaning-up-against-a-tree look, or, if you're at the beach, try a profile shot, where you're sitting up and looking out at the sea.

3. Turn off the flash:
The on-camera flash will be a total wash-out. Maternity photographer Ashley McNamara suggests standing right in front of an open door or window to get great natural light instead. If you're shooting outside avoid mid-day sun. "The best times to go outside are early in the morning or an hour or two before sunset when there's that golden, sun-tanned, highlights-in-the-hair light," Dagupion says.

4. Wear something tight and stretchy:
The whole point of the shoot is to see the gorgeous belly, right? Tight, stretchy clothes will best accentuate all your great curves.

"Never wear maternity clothes," Hart says, since their primary objective is often to feel good on, rather than flatter your shape. McNamara recommends trying some fitted Gap or Old Navy tank tops in solid colors instead.

"Skip the florals, plaids, and checks," maternity photog Koren Reyes stresses. "You want to be able to look back at these pictures in 10 or 20 years and still think the photos look great. Whereas really stylized clothes can get dated, solid darks and neutrals are timeless."

Alternatively, skip clothes entirely. "I have a set of sheer curtains from Target, and I use one panel to wrap the breasts and another panel to wrap the belly," McNamara says.

5. Find a great photographer:
You want someone you feel comfortable with and will have fun around taking your picture. If your husband fits the bill, ask him to take the pics (and also to haul any extra props or equipment). Or plan a fun photo date with one of your girlfriends.

Poses to Try:
Here are a few of our expert maternity photographers favorite poses:
Close up on the belly You lying on your back on a couch. Older sibling kissing the belly You holding older sibling (so they're sitting on the belly facing you) Sitting Indian style, facing the camera Working the S curve (one hip out, one shoulder high, one shoulder low, hands relaxed. Think, supermodel!) Profile shot Any yoga poses you know (and can get into easily) Zack adds, "Show us your gorgeous belly! Enter your best big, beautiful belly pics in our Belly Photo Contest now for the chance to win $2500."

F. Michael Taylor & Christopher A. Cosper Obtain Favorable Verdict in Trucking Negligence Tort Case

F. Michael Taylor & Christopher A. Cosper Obtain Favorable Verdict in Trucking Negligence Tort Case

Hull Barrett attorneys obtain verdict in favor of their client, Cowan Systems and its driver.

Augusta, GA (PRWEB) June 1, 2010

Hull Barrett, PC (Augusta, GA) is pleased to announce attorneys, F. Michael Taylor (http://hullbarrett. com/attorneys/mtaylor. html (http://hullbarrett. com/attorneys/mtaylor. html)) and Christopher A. Cosper (http://hullbarrett. com/attorneys/ccosper. html (http://hullbarrett. com/attorneys/ccosper. html)), recently obtained a defendant’s verdict in a trucking negligence tort case (CIVIL ACTION NO. 2005-CV-0203) involving Cowan Systems and its driver.

On Saint Patrick's Day in March 2003, eight separate accidents on I-20 occurred in between mile markers 180 and 181 East. Involved in the accidents were several box trucks, eighteen wheelers and cars. The plaintiff alleged four trucking companies and their drivers were negligent in causing his collision.

More specifically, the plaintiff argued that due to the bad weather Hull Barrett’s client, Cowan Systems and its driver, owed a duty of extraordinary care, rather than ordinary care. The plaintiff further alleged that Cowan's driver was traveling too fast during the rainy conditions and that his negligence, along with that of another tractor trailer driver, caused Plaintiff to swerve from the road in his Mazda Miata and collide with a tractor trailer on the shoulder of the road. The plaintiff claimed a third trucker was liable due to an accident shutting down the highway and the tractor trailer on the shoulder was liable for not placing proper warning devices out to warn on-coming traffic. Counsel for plaintiff asked for $15 million in his closing argument.

At the end of the 5th trial day in Columbia County Superior Court, the jury, using a special verdict form, ruled that the defendants' negligence was not the proximate cause of the plaintiff’s accident and subsequent severe injuries. The jury produced a favorable defense verdict for all four defendants.

Encryption Confirmed as Best Safeguard to Protect Sensitive Data by U. S. House of Representatives

Encryption Confirmed as Best Safeguard to Protect Sensitive Data by U. S. House of Representatives

Data Accountability and Trust Act (H. R. 4127) approved by the House for Protection of Consumer Information.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) March 30, 2006

The Energy and Commerce Committee of the U. S. House of Representatives unanimously approved The Data Accountability and Trust Act (H. R. 4127), a bill that requires companies to launch nationwide notification campaigns if the security of sensitive consumer information, such as Social Security Numbers, drivers license numbers or financial data, is breached and could be used for identity theft. This act recognizes data encryption as an essential, underlying security technology that provides organizations with “safe harbor” in the event of a security breach. It states that encrypted electronic data is “presumed” secure and that businesses that employ encryption technology are exempted from the nationwide notification requirement.

“The Data Accountability and Trust Act recognizes encryption is a fundamental enabling technology for protecting electronic data and fulfilling regulatory compliance,” said GuardianEdge Technologies’ President and CEO Alan Fudge. “An increasing number of government regulations, such as California’s SB 1386 and 22 other state laws around the country, exempt encrypted data from these stiff notification requirements”

Highlights of the Act

Introduced by Representative Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and co-sponsored by eight members of the House, The Data Accountability and Trust Act is one of many measures lawmakers have introduced to protect sensitive consumer information since the watershed ChoicePoint data breach in March 2005.

The act affects any person or business “involved in interstate commerce that owns or possesses [sensitive] data in electronic form.” Upon discovering a breach in the security of sensitive data, these businesses are required to implement a nationwide notification program, informing each individual whose data may have been compromised. In addition, the bill calls for notification of the Federal Trade Commission, placement of website or Internet notice and notification to any financial institutions that may be affected.

However, the act also says that the “encryption of (sensitive) data, combined with appropriate safeguards of the keys necessary to enable decryption of such data, shall establish a presumption” that there is no “significant risk of identity theft to the individual to whom the personal information relates.” This means businesses that utilize encryption would be exempted from the required notifications.

The act gives the FTC enforcement powers and allocates $1 million a year to fund enforcement activities. If passed, the bill would take effect in approximately one year. The full text of the bill is available at: http://thomas. loc. gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z? d109:H. R.4127 (http://thomas. loc. gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z? d109:H. R.4127):

Other Legislation

Similar laws are also under consideration in the U. S. Senate, including The Identity Theft Protection Act (S. 1408, introduced by Senator Gordon Smith, R-Ore.); The Notification of Risk to Personal Data Act (S. 115 and S. 751 introduced by Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.); and The Personal Data Privacy & Security Act of 2005 (S. 1789, co-sponsored by senators Arlen Spector, R-Pa., and Patrick Leahy, D-Ver.).

GuardianEdge has established a resource on the current U. S. legislative landscape and pending consumer information protection acts. The report, titled: “Identity Theft and U. S. Data Protection Legislation: An Overview,” provides an update on the current state of federal information security laws as well as Sarbanes-Oxley, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). It is available online (http://www. guardianedge. com/Additional_Resources/ads/EP_Hard_Disk_White_Paper_2005121_Identity_Theft. html).

In addition, GuardianEdge has posted frequently asked questions about the Specter-Leahy bill, S. 1789. This FAQ also appears on the GuardianEdge Web site (http://www. guardianedge. com/data_security/specter-leahy_faq. html).

Senior Citizen Debt Increasing

Senior Citizen Debt Increasing

Debt among the elderly is increasing at rapid rates as expenses rise at double-digit rates. Seniors filing for bankruptcy is growing faster than any other segment of the population. Credit Advisors Foundation provides information on what can be done.

OMAHA, NE (PRWEB) August 23, 2004

According to research conducted by SRI Consulting Business Intelligence, 34% of older households carried debt in 1992 and retirees owed an average of $8,000. By 2000 older householdÂ’s debt loads had jumped 59% and the average owed had risen to $23,000. In 2001 the average credit card balance for seniors 65 and better was $4,000, and almost half of all seniors with debt carried credit card balances.

Debt has become a part of everyday life for the general populace and seniors as well. Debt and its related problems have begun to tarnish the retirement dreams of seniors due to fixed incomes, increasing expenses, and higher debt loads.

Drug costs are up 17%, medical insurance is up 15 to 25%, and employer retiree health benefits are being reduced or eliminated. Property taxes are up 10 to 20% and homeownerÂ’s insurance is up 13%--overall these expenses are rising at double-digit rates.

Analysts anticipate seniorsÂ’ debt growth to continue as the baby boomers retire comfortable with debt and not willing to delay gratification. Complicating seniorsÂ’ financial picture are low market returns and low interest rates for retirement investments, limiting their ability to draw on these sources for living expenses.

Many seniors find themselves paying high interest and fees for credit and using credit cards for necessities such as prescription drugs and groceries attempting to bridge the gap between income and costs. Meanwhile, many seniors and those approaching retirement are not saving enough to maintain their dreamed-of retirement lifestyles.

Increasingly, seniors find themselves with little choice but to consider bankruptcy. While seniors are still the smallest group of bankruptcy filers, the number of seniors finding filing necessary is growing faster than any other segment of the population. They also tend to be deeper in debt by the time they file for bankruptcy--averaging $28,000 in credit card debt alone.

What can be done? Most options are the same for everyone, regardless of age.

·Overcome your pride and talk about it. Talk about your situation to family, trusted friends or professionals.

·Quit giving money to children and grandchildren—you must have your situation under control before helping others.

·Make a budget. List your expenses and examine income sources. Can you make any adjustments?

·Go easy on your credit cards. If at all possible, stop using them. The biggest problem with plastic is we tend to underestimate the amount of money spent and overestimate our ability to repay it. Don’t forget to look for better deals. Most seniors have had the same credit card for years and there are many more options available now. If you prefer to stay with your current credit card ask for a lower rate. Monitor your credit card spending and pay off monthly. Avoid convenience checks as they carry too many additional fees and charges.

·Investigate programs in your area and request a property tax reduction. Many cities and states offer seniors special considerations.

·Check out options to tap into the equity of your home, with either a mortgage or reverse mortgage. While reverse mortgages can be complex and fees and interest rates can be steep, if you are ‘house rich and cash poor’ this may be an option.

·Consider going back to work. Many rules are changing about working and collecting social security benefits—direct questions to the Social Security Administration about your options.

·If at all possible, pay major expenses before you retire.

The more you learn, the more informed your choices will be as you make smart credit decisions.

Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development & Connect Alaska Unveil Interactive Map to Increase High-Speed Internet Access and Adoption

Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development & Connect Alaska Unveil Interactive Map to Increase High-Speed Internet Access and Adoption

Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development Commissioner Susan Bell today announced the launch of Alaska’s first statewide broadband availability map. The web-based map is fully interactive and puts powerful tools and information directly into the hands of anyone interested in improving the technological landscape in the Last Frontier State.

Anchorage, AK (Vocus) September 1, 2010

Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development Commissioner Susan Bell today announced the launch of Alaska’s first statewide broadband availability map. The web-based map is fully interactive and puts powerful tools and information directly into the hands of anyone interested in improving the technological landscape in the Last Frontier State.

“We are living in an increasingly digital world, where being connected to the Internet is essential to enhancing our quality of life. This newly completed map paves the way for technology which will create new jobs, increase Alaska’s economic competitiveness, and deliver services that have been previously unavailable to rural areas of the state,” said Commissioner Bell. “No matter where you live in Alaska, high-speed Internet enables access to quality employment, information, and vital services ranging from interactive telemedicine to distance education opportunities. Broadband gives you the opportunity to work from home, take classes online, and market products to the world - all of which have a positive impact on the local economy and quality of life.”

Much like the revolutionary impact of harnessing electricity or the telephone, high-speed Internet connection is Alaska’s lifeline to future prosperity. The development of Alaska’s map is funded by a federal stimulus grant and is guided by the Connect Alaska initiative, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED). Connect Alaska is a subsidiary of the national nonprofit Connected Nation and is Alaska’s designated entity under the grant award.

Alaska’s newly completed map shows great progress in spreading broadband across the state. Eighteen broadband providers offered data showing that 90.25% Alaskans can access broadband. However, of those, only 77% of residents report using broadband at home. The Connect Alaska initiative will continue the process of getting Alaskans online and accessing the unlimited benefits and economic opportunity associated with broadband.

Full access to Alaska’s interactive map is available now through the Connect Alaska website at www. connectak. org].

“The data you find on the Connect Alaska map reflects the beginning phase of a comprehensive initiative to address the supply and demand side challenges of the state. The goal of the Connect Alaska initiative is to help all Alaskans, particularly those in the remote villages, access the essential benefits of broadband. This effort applies to all sectors – school districts, higher education institutions, health care providers, tourism agencies, businesses, and government entities – each group offers a unique perspective for determining the technological challenges and needs in their communities,” explains Brian Mefford, CEO of Connect Alaska’s parent organization, Connected Nation. “It is imperative that the map is as accurate as possible, so we are urging everyone to check the information reflected at your address and report any inaccuracies through our feedback mechanisms.”

All Alaska residents are encouraged to visit the Connect Alaska website, www. connectak. org], to join in this important initiative and offer feedback. The website gives residents a one-stop-shopping portal where they can find providers at their address, check their current Internet speeds, request broadband service in their area, and share stories of how high-speed Internet has impacted their lives.

Connect Alaska is funded through a $1.9 million award by the U. S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to launch the initiative in the state and carry out the work over a five-year period. Under the NTIA State Broadband Data and Development grant program Connect Alaska is charged with creating statewide awareness, mapping, and maintaining the state broadband inventory for two years, and conduct planning efforts for a period of five years. These funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. NTIA, as required by the ARRA, will make a national broadband map publicly available by February 17, 2011.

By increasing broadband access and use across the state, Alaska is facing a bright future, with greater opportunities, and a new throughway to economic empowerment.

About Connect Alaska: Connect Alaska is a subsidiary of Connected Nation and operates as a non-profit in the state of Alaska. The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED) is leading the initiative to increase broadband Internet access throughout rural Alaska. Connect Alaska was commissioned by the state to work with all broadband providers in the state to create detailed maps of broadband coverage in order to accurately pinpoint remaining gaps in broadband availability in Alaska. This work will support developing a statewide plan for the deployment and adoption of broadband in the state. For more information visit: www. connectak. org.

Headaches And Hay Fever March In With Spring

Headaches And Hay Fever March In With Spring

How to Choose a Safe Treatment for this "Double Whammy"

Newtown, CT (PRWEB) March 19, 2008

The hot word in headaches today? Nasal allergies – spring is here and so is hay fever. A recent study showed a clear link between nasal allergies (hay fever) and migraine. In the study, 34% of those with hay fever also had migraine, and only 4% of those without hay fever had migraine.

There are a wide assortment of products to help the millions of sufferers -- ranging from antihistamines to aspirin and acetaminophen to opiate analgesics but none of these treatments are invariably effective – and all have potentially serious side effects to certain patients.

So it is no surprise that many Americans fear that we are an overmedicated society –
Based on a 2002 survey, 46% of Americans use at least one prescription drug daily.  20% of recently approved prescription drugs have serious, life threatening side effects.  Percentage of Americans taking anti-allergy medications who may not even have allergies: 65%  The annual cost of prescription drug errors: $100 billion  The approximate number of Americans that die annually from FDA approved drugs: 125,000  The approximate number of Americans that die annually from Aspirin use: 2,000 And question just what to do when the allergy symptoms hit…

Sinol – made from capsaicin, a naturally occurring substance found in cayenne peppers (and recently touted by Hillary Clinton as a source for staying healthy on the campaign trail) is a nasal spray that quickly delivers pain relief for the most debilitating headaches and sinus symptoms without drowsiness, dependency or other medicinal issues associated with non-herbal remedies and at a fraction of the cost of prescription drugs.

Recently, a group of researchers from Harvard Medical School has concluded that natural capsaicin is an effective ingredient for relieving all types of pain, including the pain associated with headaches. Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City conducted research on capsaicin in nasal spray form and concluded that intranasal medications for the treatment of headaches are significantly more effective than by digestive means because they reduce the swelling of blood vessels in the brain that are the direct cause of most headaches.

Allergy season 2008 will be in full swing shortly and sufferers need to know the options. For more information on Sinol please visit www. sinolusa. com.

Institute for OneWorld Health to Help Eliminate Neglected Disease in Bangladesh and Nepal

Institute for OneWorld Health to Help Eliminate Neglected Disease in Bangladesh and Nepal

Visceral Leishmaniasis program expands to support South Asian regional elimination efforts.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) November 24, 2010

The Institute for OneWorld Health (iOWH), the US based non-profit pharmaceutical company with offices in San Francisco, USA and India that develops drugs for people with neglected infectious diseases in the developing world, today announced a new program in Nepal and Bangladesh to develop a therapy for Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) available through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Expansion of OneWorld Health’s VL program into Nepal and Bangladesh is part of an effort to achieve regional elimination of VL in South Asia (India, Nepal and Bangladesh) by 2015.

VL is a disease acquired through the bite of a sand fly infected with the leishmania parasite. Symptoms include chronic fever, weight loss, anemia and enlargement of the liver and spleen. If left untreated the disease is almost always fatal. About 500,000 new infections are reported each year with most VL cases found in Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Sudan and Brazil.

Current treatments for VL in Bangladesh and Nepal are expensive, may be difficult to administer, and with increasing resistance to some treatments, existing drugs may be ineffective. This project aims to add Paromomycin IM Injection (PMIM), an affordable and safe therapy, to the treatment options. “Helping patients in Bangladesh and Nepal represents the growth of our successful program with PMIM. We are very excited that we will be able to bring better health to those most in need,” said Richard Chin, M. D., OneWorld Health's Chief Executive Officer.

PMIM is an anti-parasitic antibiotic with few side effects and is currently one of the least costly therapies for VL. The drug was developed by iOWH with support from partners including the Indian Council of Medical Research and in 2006, was registered with the Government of India following successful clinical trials there. In 2007 the drug was added to the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.

In Bangladesh, iOWH will collaborate with the Ministry of Health and the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (ICDDRB) to implement a clinical study on PMIM in selected government health sites. In addition, a model will be developed to strengthen access to treatment and awareness of VL. This will be done through case identification, referral to public facilities and by building linkages to village health workers.

In Nepal, iOWH will work with the Ministry of Health and with B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, one of the country’s leading health research institutions, to conduct a study on the effectiveness of using the combination therapy of Paromomycin intramuscular injection (PMIM) with Miltefosine (MF) in government hospitals. The purpose of the study is to assess the feasibility, acceptability and safety of the use of this combination therapy to support the government of Nepal’s adoption of PMIM-MF as one of the first-line treatment options included in Nepal’s VL Elimination Program.

Using the expertise gained through their work in India, iOWH, in collaboration with local partners, will provide project oversight and develop training programs and education materials. In addition, capacity will be built at the study centers as knowledge will be transferred to healthcare personnel and local staff will be trained in the appropriate use of the treatment and good clinical research skills.

India-based Gland Pharma Ltd will manufacture PMIM for the studies in Bangladesh and Nepal and will be working with the governments to obtain product registration and marketing approval.

About the Institute for OneWorld Health
Headquartered in San Francisco, the mission of the Institute for OneWorld Health is to develop safe, effective and affordable new medicines for people with infectious diseases in the developing world. More information about iOWH can be found at http://www. oneworldhealth. org.

Teach Students How to be Safe While Away at College

Teach Students How to be Safe While Away at College

Packing up the first college bound child can be quite an emotional, experience for all involved, but parents should remember to go over all safety precautions beforehand. Kids leaving the nest may feel excited and nervous, but they may also not have the common sense to handle certain situations they in.

Amityville, NY (PRWEB) August 3, 2006

Packing up the first college bound child can be quite an emotional, experience for all involved, but parents should remember to go over all safety precautions beforehand. Kids leaving the nest may feel excited and nervous, but they may also not have the common sense to handle certain situations they in.

“There are so many concerns for parents when sending their first kid to college as well as their youngest,” says noted security expert and chairman of NAPCO Security, Inc. (Nasdaq: NSSC), Richard S. Soloway, “the best thing one can do is teach them how to be safe and what precautions to take.”

Facts:

A total of 84 homicides; 7,941 sex offenses; 9,296 aggravated assaults; and 3,367 arsons were reported “on-campus” from 2001 to 2003.

Source: U. S. Department of Education, Summary Campus Crime and Security Statistics - Criminal Offenses.

Soloway has compiled the following list of safety tips for college bound kids:

Before going away, make sure the student has all campus information. Make sure they know where the location of the campus police headquarters, student health services and local hospitals are, and that they have all emergency numbers.  Never let a stranger into the dorm room. Even if they say they are a roommate’s friend, don’t let them in; they can wait in the hall or lobby. Alert the roommate to let them know who is there.  Always lock the dorm door, even if just going down the hall for a few minutes. So many crimes occur on campus, every precaution needs to be taken to protect oneself.  Don’t travel alone at night on campus. Walk with a friend and in well-lit populated areas. If someone seems to be following, go to the first populated building available and let campus police know.  Don’t leave the doors open to the residence hall. Make sure after entering or leaving a residence hall that the door is shut all the way. Do not give out dorm keys to anyone.  Watch for any suspicious people around campus, dorms and apartments. If someone seems out of place and doesn’t appear to be a student, report them to local campus police to have them checked out.  Look into the car before getting in. Be sure to visually inspect your car before getting in it to make sure there is no one in the back seat, and that the car is not blocked in by other cars.  Do not accept any drinks from a stranger. While at a dorm party, local bar or fraternity party do not accept any un-opened drinks from a stranger. Drinks could be laced with a tasteless drug that could make one unconscious and leave one in a very dangerous situation.  Carry a panic button alarm everywhere. NAPCO’s X255 panic button which comes in a keychain and pendant style, can ward off a dangerous attacker and also can alert security to an emergency situation directly through the campuses alarm system.

On NAPCO and Chairman Richard Soloway:

NAPCO Security Systems (Nasdaq listed as NSSC), is a global leader in design and manufacturing of patented electronic and mechanical security systems whose products include intrusion alarms, fire alarms, electronic locking devices and access control systems. Chairman Richard Soloway’s comments on all aspects of security have appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, International Herald Tribune, Business Week, Forbes, Crain's New York Business, Newsday, Reuters, Chicago Tribune, Entertainment Weekly, Detroit Free Press, Philadelphia Inquirer, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Transcript and The Robb Report among others. Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) July 17, 2009

They also offer the latest in laser technology such as photo-rejuvenation, laser hair removal, fractional laser resurfacing with DOT Therapy and Accent®, a radiofrequency device for cellulite, body contouring and skin tightening.

Practices like North Dallas Dermatology, who utilize the Vivacare Patient Education service and who are experts in a particular treatment, such as Phototherapy for Psoriasis, are also highlighted on the "psoriasis-doctors" (http://www. psoriasis-doctors. com/ (http://www. psoriasis-doctors. com/)) website, a resource for patients and health consumers seeking advice from skin care experts about their condition.

North Dallas Dermatology joins other Dallas area dermatologists (http://www. fromyourdoctor. com/document/dallas-dermatologists. html (http://www. fromyourdoctor. com/document/dallas-dermatologists. html))
Who use the "From Your Doctor" patient education service from Vivacare Inc. that enables them to create a customized educational resource that reflects their unique approach to care.

Alcoholic Drinks Continue Its Battle with Government Taxation and the Need to Adapt to Ever Changing Drinking Habits

Alcoholic Drinks Continue Its Battle with Government Taxation and the Need to Adapt to Ever Changing Drinking Habits

Research and Markets (http://www. researchandmarkets. com/reports/c9579) has announced the addition of Global Alcoholic Drinks Report 2004 to their offering

(PRWEB) November 19, 2004

Alcoholic drinks have experienced mixed fortunes in recent years. Growth rates have remained fairly steady across the globe, although alcohol has continued its battle with government taxation, a toughening economic environment, and the need to adapt to ever changing drinking habits.

The four categories covered by our new 2004 report – beer, wine, spirits and other alcoholic drinks – have in some cases struggled and in other cases have been forced to reinvent themselves in order to retain consumer interest. Low malt beer has been a popular innovation in Japan and the US for example. Meanwhile the onset of pre-mixed spirits, also known as flavoured alcoholic beverages (FABs), has boosted the ‘other alcoholic drinks‘ category and has allowed spirits manufacturers to connect their brands with a considerably younger audience.

As with soft drinks, alcoholic beverages have found most growth opportunities in the developing markets of East Europe and Asia. However, health issues and concern over responsible alcohol consumption remain issues for the alcoholic drinks industry in all corners of the globe.

The 2004 Global Alcoholic Drinks Report presents data broken down to 4 sectors exploring 7 world regions and 75 countries across 11 years, and is comprised of 2 main sections:

1. Historic market analysis – a full market commentary provides in-depth analysis of trends covering regional dynamics, global rankings, analysis of the fastest growing areas and major global developments. Information is presented at a range of levels, by country, region and segment – represented as consumption in million litres, consumption per person in litres, and consumption and consumption per person percentage change.

2. Forecast market analysis – expert analysis provides the best available projection of market growth. As with the historic market analysis – information is presented at a range of levels, by country, region and segment – represented as consumption in million litres, consumption per person in litres, and consumption and consumption per person percentage change.

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine Congratulates and Supports PBS' New Show 'The New Medicine'

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine Congratulates and Supports PBS' New Show 'The New Medicine'

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine – the world’s leader in mind-body medicine education, certification and outreach – applauds PBS on their show, 'The New Medicine.' The production’s position that "even some of the most conservative health institutions are now prescribing meditation and self-hypnosis alongside high-tech modern medicine" is a ringing endorsement of the value and applicability of CMBM’s work.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) March 29, 2006

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) congratulates PBS on their documentary, ‘The New Medicine.’ This program “explores a burgeoning movement taking place in hospitals and clinics across the country: integrating the best of high-tech medicine with a new attitude that recognizes it is essential to the healing process to treat the patient as a whole person, and not a cog in an assembly line.”

Supporting the American health-care system so patients are not treated like cogs is central to CMBM’s philosophies. The Center is at the leading edge of the movement that 'The New Medicine' discusses – to integrate scientifically based, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) into the American medical model.

The Center’s effective and very original approach is to train medical school teachers and doctors in mind-body medicine so that they may pass these strategies along. This approach gives these professionals fortunate to train at CMBM’s intensive, small-group programs, first-hand knowledge in mind-body medicine. These transformative experiences have shifted many of the thousands of graduates of these programs towards healthier and more integrative ways of being – as well as the lives of these professionals’ clients and students.

The director of CMBM, Dr. James Gordon, M. D., is America’s leading authority on integrating mind-body medicine into traditional health-care systems such as hospitals, clinics and medical schools. “In the last 35 years, we have begun to realize the shortcomings of biomedicine and realize that we are losing the wars on cancer, hypertension, arthritis, depression, and AIDS. In contrast, CMBM and ‘The New Medicine’ understands that each of us is a unique and whole person and insists that healing be a fully collaborative partnership in which teaching predominates over treatment, and it regards self-care – particularly through self-awareness, relaxation, meditation, nutrition and exercise – as the true primary care.”

In addition to offering nutritional training in their Food As Medicine™ program and cancer support in their CancerGuides™ programs, respectively, the Center for Mind-Body Medicine has used its holistic medical techniques all over the world to help war-ravaged and traumatized peoples in Israel, Gaza, Kosovo, and right here in America after 9/11 and Katrina. CMBM is a resource for practitioners and professionals looking for CAM material, training and guidance.

The Center for Mind-Body medicine has trained thousands of medical professionals around the world as well as helped to heal thousands more refugees and victims of war and terror using mind-body medicine. Through scientifically-based and proven techniques they broaden the traditional medical model and bring a new pattern of healing to the world. PBS is congratulated on how well it is documenting these successes.

For additional information on the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and its position on CAM in the American health-care system, please contact Dr. James Gordon, M. D., Director or visit http://www. CMBM. org (http://www. CMBM. org).

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (http:/www. CMBM. org) is the world’s leader in mind-body medicine education, certification and outreach. It supports the American health-care and medical education system and backs outreach in many of the world’s terror and war ravaged locations.

Fat Fighter FBCx Receives Kosher Certification

Fat Fighter FBCx Receives Kosher Certification

ArtJen Complexus Holdings Corp. is pleased to announce that they have received kosher certification from Rabbi Gabriel Zinner of Brooklyn, NY for FBCx, the fat fighting fiber tablet.

Windsor, ON (PRWEB) July 12, 2006

ArtJen Complexus Holdings Corp. is pleased to announce that they have received kosher certification from Rabbi Gabriel Zinner of Brooklyn, NY for FBCx, the fat fighting fiber tablet.

According to ArtJen President, Dr. Catherine Jen, kosher certification is further evidence of the high standards to which FBCx is manufactured and is part of the company’s efforts to make their highly efficacious weight loss product available to all of those who are in need of it.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Two-thirds of the adult population of the USA is either overweight or obese. According to World Health Organization statistics, there are one billion overweight individuals worldwide and at least 300 million of them are obese. All natural FBCx is proving to be an effective weapon in the war on obesity.

Following years of investigation two university professors, Drs. Catherine Jen and Joseph Artiss have developed what has been described as a “powerful weapon in the war on obesity.”

“The popularity of FBCx is steadily growing so we are very pleased to be able to provide FBCx as Kosher certified,” said Dr. Artiss. He added that, “The demand for FBCx has increased dramatically as friends have begun telling friends about FBCx and entire families have begun taking FBCx. Our online survey indicates very high referral and repeat order rates.”

About Us:

FBCx is an all natural, soluble, dietary fiber that has the very unique ability to bind and eliminate nine times its own weight in dietary fat. Taken as directed, two tablets of FBCx per fat-containing meal are capable of removing about 54 grams of fat or 500kcal per day from the normal North American diet. This level of reduction in caloric intake is sufficient to cause a decrease in body weight of about 1-1½ pounds per week, if there is no change in eating habits.
