Breast Cancer Survivor Launches Web Site to Support Pink Ribbon Awareness

Breast Cancer Survivor Launches Web Site to Support Pink Ribbon Awareness

Rhonda Haynes, and sister Wanda Shea, created CowgirlsInPink. com to support pink ribbon awareness after Shea's battle with breast cancer. Their Web site offers a vast assortment of pink products and accessories for breast cancer supporters and survivors. In addition to spreading the word about healthy living for women, they hope to add clothing and wigs for women who have courageously won the fight.

Mingus, TX (PRWEB) October 3, 2009

Rhonda Haynes, and sister Wanda Shea, have been educators for years. As teachers they are committed to spreading knowledge and guidance to each of their students. Lately, they have taken on a new field of education: breast cancer awareness. After Shea's recent battle with breast cancer, the women have been dedicated to raising money and generating support for women who are amidst their own struggle with the disease. Thus, www. CowgirlsInPink. com was created.

These sisters are proud to offer a variety of pink ribbon products because each purchase helps to fund mammograms for women who are battling breast cancer. An assortment of hats, gifts and accessories, jewelry, purses, T-shirts, stationary and bath products are available on their Web site.

"Mainly, I just want to let people know that we want to be able to fund mammograms. We will also set up a service locally for people who must undergo chemo and expand support groups throughout our area," Haynes said.

The women believe that a preventative approach to breast cancer will generate a heightened awareness through education and group support. Their products are intended to make these victims feel better while looking better. In response to the physical and emotional changes breast cancer victims will undergo, Haynes and Shea have made it their mission to provide inspiration and motivation through their merchandise and support.

They hope to add bras, prosthetics, wigs and blouses specially designed for women with breast cancer to their Web site because it's difficult for victims to find such products to meet their needs.

Information about breast cancer prevention is one of the many topics they will be discussing on their newly formulated blog, www. BreastCancerDesigns. com. Readers can also discover helpful information about maintaining a proper diet, general fitness and where they can find support groups. CowgirlsInPink. com strives to service and support women with breast cancer through pink ribbon merchandise and community outreach. They also offer a personal blog, www. CowgirlsInPink. BlogSpot. com, to answer questions and provide individual support.

Royalty Comes to Richmond, Va: Nationally Recognized The Queen of Health® Lectures Throughout the State

Royalty Comes to Richmond, Va: Nationally Recognized The Queen of Health® Lectures Throughout the State

Guest of TV and Radio, National Health Educator to provide health lectures throughout Virginia. Come and see what's in the food we eat; see what some food companies and some government agencies don't want you to know. There is a direct correlation between nutrition and disease.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 2, 2006

Dubbed the “Erin Brokovich of Nutrition” by the press and media because of her aggressive stance on our toxic food environment, Tami Hulcher, Health Educator and President of Ola Loa, Inc. will be the featured speaker at CJW Medical Center, Chippenham Campus, located at 7101 Jahnke Road, Richmond, on Tuesday, August 8th 7pm. The Queen of Health® will also be in Colonial Heights at the Optimist Center at Meridian on Saturday, August 5th 10am and 3pm; and will be traveling to Fredericksburg at Courtland High School on Thursday, August 10th at 7pm. Ms. Hulcher’s mother and sister are Richmond residents.

“Tami’s popular “Got Health?” lecture has been featured in many schools, hospitals, church and women’s groups, businesses and private organizations. She has been a guest speaker for the American Heart Association, Boeing, Pepperdine, University of Southern CA, The Women’s Conference on Epilepsy, the American Cancer Society, to name a few. We invited Tami to educate our community because she has received high marks from participants and sponsors, and because she truly cares about our children and our society,” says Darlene Knowles, Chesterfield business owner and local wellness coordinator. Colonial Heights resident and registered nurse, Nancy Halbert adds, “I attended one of Tami’s lectures in Richmond and was so impressed at how she could articulate the nutrition facts from fiction, and educate many health care professionals.” “Tami works with many health care professionals and their patient bases, including a specialist at UCLA who treats AUTISM,” Halbert says.

Having been featured on several television and radio shows, this soon-to-be author is also a radio show co-host and contributing health writer for magazines. Ms. Hulcher knows all too well the struggles of getting our families to eat right…she is a mother of three children! “Our children are our most precious resource, and we should all stand united over their nutritional concerns and overall health. Obesity is now an epidemic, and according to Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Preventative Medicine and Research Center, if the current rate of our health declines, some of us adults may outlive our children! We are also seeing many degenerative diseases on the rise in adolescents, like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. I teach parents and children to read labels and avoid our very toxic food environment. I help parents understand that disease prevention is the key to long life. What you and your family eat today will affect your health and longevity in the future,” says Ms. Hulcher. Children ages 12 and over are encouraged to attend.

These events are open to the public, however seating is limited, RSVPs are required. For more information, please contact 310 471-6970. RSVPs ONLY to 804 330-4053.

All press and/or media are encouraged to contact Ms. Hulcher directly at 310 471-6970. She will be available for television and radio appearances while in Richmond.

Business Mom takes Earth Day to the Internet

Business Mom takes Earth Day to the Internet

Business Mom hosts an ideas list on the simple every day ways people can make a difference in our environment. Suggestions are pouring in from across North America and around the world.

(PRWEB) April 19, 2002

Earth Day is not just a day about big ecological projects believes Paula Polman, a business mom in Edmonton, Alberta. Earth Day is also about how ordinary people can make a huge impact in their homes and communities.

Polman's business, Mossberry Hollow Natural Care Products, is hosting the You Make a Difference Celebration of Earth Day in a section of her e-retail site. People from around the world have been visiting since the start of April, offering up their tips, suggestions and activities on how they make a daily difference. The response has been tremendous.

The ideas are ranging from recycling tips to encouraging wildlife renewal, natural gardening suggestions, composting ideas, donations of household goods to charities instead of tossing them into landfill, craft ideas for kids and many more ideas.

"We've had contributions from as far as France and England," Polman says, "and the ideas keep rolling in. We are co-ordinating our list with another mom run business out of the US, Anne Ramstetter Wenzel of Econosystems, a marketing research service in California, who is running her second annual "Every Day Ways" campaign."

It's not a contest between the two operations, but both businesses are encouraging contributions from a wide cross section of clientele and visitors and are offering a slate of donated prizes for an end of the month draw offered by other like-minded businesses.

"We had over 2000 hits within the first week alone to the earth day pages and expect that we'll have over 5000 hits before this is done," she says. "Promotion has been mainly word of mouth and a few contest sites so far, so the response has been very exciting."

Why do an Earth Day event? Polman explains "Earth day is about keeping our environment clean and healthy. That falls within the mandate of our business, creating and manufacturing natural bath and body care products. This is just an extension of the same. The healthier our environment is, the healthier our bodies become."

"As a mom, that is important to me, as I see so many kids with environmentally triggered illnesses like asthma and allergies. The growth rate on these illnesses has been staggering over the last few decades, especially in kids. I don't want my children to be ill because of where they live. " Polman and her family recently moved to urban Edmonton from living in the pristine environment of Canada's northern Yukon Territory.

In 1999 Scientific American published an article about the Invisible Epidemic regarding the rise of asthma in urban children and no one knows why. A New Zealand study found allergies more prevalent in urban children over rural children. Much of this has to be in direct response to what we are exposed to in urban settings, but the chemical soup is so complex that it becomes almost impossible to isolate the individual causes.

The economic costs associated with these types of illnesses are high too. The cost of asthma alone in 2000 was estimated to be US$12.7 billion, with direct costs amounting to US$8.1 billion and lost earnings due to illness and death totalling US$4.6 billion, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

Earth Day is a great event to help promote awareness of the environment we live in and with events like the You Make A Difference Celebration at Mossberry Hollow, we can share how we can all make an impact to create a cleaner, greener planet and healthier communities.

Clean Cookstoves Featured on The Martha Stewart Show

Clean Cookstoves Featured on The Martha Stewart Show

Cooking shouldn’t kill, but for many women and families around the world it does

New York, NY (Vocus) December 23, 2010

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves - a partnership of governments, non-profit organizations, United Nations agencies, and the private sector working together to create a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions - appeared on The Martha Stewart Show (12/22) to inform Stewart’s vast audience about the dangers posed by exposure to smoke from traditional cookstoves and to invite viewers to get engaged in the clean cookstoves movement.

Leslie Cordes, Acting Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, said, “A major component of the mission of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is to educate the public about the unique role clean cookstoves play in saving lives, improving livelihoods, empowering women, and combating climate change. Martha Stewart, with her millions of loyal viewers and followers, gave the Alliance an invaluable opportunity to raise awareness about this important issue.”

Lisa Jackson, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), appeared on the show to explain how clean cookstoves can deliver significant environmental and health benefits in the developing world. Jackson said, “This is a women’s issue, a childrens’ issue, and an economic issue.”

The Alliance was represented by Aaron Sherinian of the United Nations Foundation, which leads the work of the Alliance. Sherinian underscored the basic truth that “Cooking shouldn’t kill, but for many women and families around the world it does. Everyone can get involved and tell the world that this issue matters and should be at the top of the global agenda.”

The segment will be available for online viewing at http://www. marthastewart. com/show/the-martha-stewart-show/the-giving-show.

BACKGROUND
Cookstove smoke contributes to a range of chronic illnesses and acute health impacts such as early childhood pneumonia, emphysema, lung cancer, bronchitis, cardiovascular disease and low birth weight.

The smoke from inefficient stoves continues to contribute to global climate change by producing harmful greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and methane, and aerosols such as black carbon. Reliance on biomass for cooking and heating also increases pressure on local natural resources and forces women and children to spend many hours each week collecting firewood -- an especially dangerous task for women and girls in refugee camps and conflict zones.

The use of efficient cookstoves can dramatically reduce fuel consumption and exposure to harmful smoke. Recent scientific evidence confirms that the greater the emissions reductions, the greater the health benefits. More efficient stoves also reduce the time people (usually women and girls) have to spend collecting fuel, and since stoves last for several years, the accumulated savings in time and cost can be invested back into families, communities and economies.

The reductions in emissions achieved by clean cookstoves have the potential to create revenues from carbon credits. Stove companies can use this revenue to reduce stove prices or expand into new markets. More broadly, the entire clean cookstove supply-chain should be a source of economic opportunity and job creation at the local level.

To achieve its '100 by 20' goal, the Alliance will establish industry standards; spur innovative financing mechanisms; champion the cause across the donor and development communities; develop indoor air quality guidelines; address global tax and tariff barriers; field test clean stoves and fuels; and develop research roadmaps across key sectors such as health, climate, technology and fuels.

A thriving global industry for clean cooking solutions will provide a range of long-term benefits for the entire world -- from improving global health to combating climate change.

Statistics Show Early Drinkers Have More Problems with Alcohol

Statistics Show Early Drinkers Have More Problems with Alcohol

Data indicates that one third of people who received treatment for alcohol abuse reported their first intoxication being between the ages of 15 and 17

(PRWEB) April 20, 2005

In 2002 there were more than 680,000 people who received treatment due to alcohol being the primary substance abused, and more than a third of them reported having gotten drunk for the first time between the ages of 15 and 17. This data comes from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services AdministrationÂ’s Treatment Episode Data Set.

This report also showed that 37 percent of the group became intoxicated before the age of 14. In all, nearly 90 percent of people in treatment for alcohol abuse that year reported getting drunk before the legal drinking age of 21.

Of the more than 22 million people in need of treatment in the United States, nearly 15 million list alcohol as the primary substance, and only a fraction of them actually receive it.

“I was 16 the first time I got drunk,” reports Lucas, who at 27 has now been clean and sober for over five years, “My drinking escalated through the latter part of high school and I eventually dropped out of college twice because of my alcohol abuse. Everything else took a back seat to drinking.”

As a graduate of the Narconon Arrowhead Drug Rehabilitation and Education Program, Lucas is now a Certified Chemical Dependency Counselor and Narconon Prevention Specialist helping prevent kids from going down the same road he and too many others traveled.

“I am very grateful for my family and for Narconon,” he says. The Narconon program is based on the research and developments of American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard’s drug-free rehabilitation methodology.

Drug and alcohol education and prevention efforts are the primary factor in keeping our nationÂ’s youth from becoming statistics, and the responsibilities lies with parents, teachers, ministers and other family and friends, not just anti-drug organizations who work at it full-time.

There are only a few times a year when drug and alcohol use is thrust into the national spotlight, and April is one of them since it is Alcohol Awareness Month. Other times include National Recovery Month in September and Red Ribbon Week at the end of October, where the focus is on education and prevention.

For more information or to get help for a loved one in need, contact Narconon Arrowhead today at 1-800-468-6933. You may also visit www. stopaddiction. com and www. alcohol-addiction. org.

I am very pleased with their efforts," said Dr. Goman.

"Given their stellar performance in billing, when I decided to switch to a paperless office it was only natural for me to turn to Mednet System for their EMR Application. I'm glad that I did. Their EMR Application is as proficient as their billing services. I have been using EMR for the last 6 months. We do not have to pull any paper charts and any new documents coming into the office can be directly scanned into the EMR, reducing an extra step for my office staff. The ability to discontinue paper applications in the office reduces our office workload, therefore saving everyone time and stress. The patients are pleased with the effects of it too - the office runs smoother with it," according to Dr. Goman.

"This success story is one more attribute to our practice management skills and expert billing services. When our clients are successful using our solutions and services then everybody wins. We are vested in the satisfaction and prosperity of our clients. We take great pride in not only being able to increase profits and improve workflow for our clients, but also being able to help improve their patients' satisfaction," said Niraj Jetly, CEO, Mednet System.

White paper series on email fraud helps potential victims avoid financial and emotional devastation

Montreal, (PRWEB) January 21, 2005

Vircom Inc., developer of Modus™ secure email management solutions, released today a white paper titled Scam Prevention Guide - How to recognize a phish when you see one. The second volume in its series on Exposing Email-Borne Fraud, the document explains how phishing attacks occur and offers valuable information on how to avoid victimization.

Phishing is one of today's fastest-growing types of email fraud. The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reported more than 1500 active phishing websites and 51 instances of brand spoofing in November 2004 alone. Fraudsters use spoofed but authentic-looking emails and websites to con unsuspecting victims into divulging personal information which scammers then use to commit financial fraud and identity theft.

"Vircom is committed to developing solutions to end phishing and other types of email-borne fraud," said Sylvain Durocher, president and founder of Vircom. "In conjunction, we are actively working to educate consumers on how to identify phishing scams and avoid becoming victims of online fraud."

Championship Chess Director to Conduct a Workshop on Teaching Chess Across Multiple Intelligences at the Georgia Association for the Gifted Conference

Championship Chess Director to Conduct a Workshop on Teaching Chess Across Multiple Intelligences at the Georgia Association for the Gifted Conference

Stephen A. Schneider, Director of Championship Chess, educator and author of The Scholastic Chess Series, will conduct an interactive workshop on teaching chess to reach across multiple intelligences within the differentiated classroom at the Georgia Association for the Gifted Conference in Athens, Georgia, March 10-12, 2005.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 9, 2005

Stephen A. Schneider will conduct an interactive workshop entitled “Multiple Intelligences in Action in the Classroom” from 11:15 a. m. to noon at the Georgia Association for the Gifted Conference in Athens, Georgia, March 10-12, 2005. Participants will view video as well as engage in hands-on demonstrations that introduce chess concepts and strategies as a means of reaching Gifted and Talented students who have different strengths and learning styles.

A former classroom teacher, Schneider is Director of Atlanta-based Championship Chess and author of The Scholastic Chess Series. The Series includes Chess Basics, Chess Openings I, Endgames Strategies I and a chess readiness activity book, Color My Chess World, that introduces pre-chess activities to very young children. The conference is expected to draw more than 500 teachers of the gifted and educators and community leaders, as well as parents of gifted children. Championship Chess coaches have guided scholastic chess clubs that, consistently, have placed high in state championships for more than 20 years.

Since 1995, Championship Chess, and its parent company Teachable Tech, have been annual presenters at the conference. Schneider, who has been teaching chess to children for more than 30 years, will examine how and why chess is an excellent tool for reaching across multiple intelligences within the differentiated classroom.

Schneider will also illustrate ways creative chess instruction addresses the first seven of Howard GardnerÂ’s multiple intelligences. He will also demonstrate the teaching tools and strategies that can be differentiated for studentsÂ’ characteristics and needs in order to enhance and accelerate overall learning and improve problem solving, and he will provide tips for implementing an effective scholastic chess program.

As a teaching tool, chess is quickly gaining ground in schools all over the United States. Studies conducted over the last 30 years show that studentsÂ’ IQs increase and test scores improve after less than a year of systematic chess study. It has been shown to enhance and accelerate learning and improve problem-solving abilities, expand math and reading skills, increase self-esteem and develop concentration and focus. Schneider will also illustrate ways chess addresses cognitive outcomes: visualization, thinking ahead, thinking concretely and abstractly, weighing options and planning ahead.

Participants will learn tips for implementing an effective scholastic chess program that develops a lifelong learning pursuit for children and opens the door to the world of chess outside the classroom. Championship Chess clubs and their coaches have won local, state, regional and national awards and distinctions. Currently, Championship Chess players are ranked in the top 10 in the state of Georgia and the top 100 in the United States.

Championship Chess coaches have made presentations to various educator groups throughout the country, including for other conferences on the gifted child, for staff development workshops and at home school conventions.

The coaches teach lessons in strategy and supervise chess play among public, private and home schooled students. The reproducible workbooks created for the Scholastic Chess Series are designed for students who are beginners in chess, as well as for those who play and are ready to improve their skills. Each of these titles has a supporting video with Coach Steve Schneider teaching key lessons that integrate with the print materials.

Chess Basics is the initial workbook for students. Step-by-step, it introduces the chess pieces one at a time, not only demonstrating how they move and capture but, also, how they work together. Chess Openings I introduces the openings that are most popular with beginning scholastic players; Endgames Strategies I prepares players for the most common endgames of chess. A chess tactics book that builds upon Chess Openings I, and is ideal for the beginning player as well as the tournament player, is scheduled for publication later this year.

Also in the Scholastic Chess Series is Color My Chess World, a chess readiness activity book, with an accompanying music CD of short, fun songs that invite kids to dance and sing along, that builds the skills to make the introduction of chess easy ― and fun ― for very young children. Developed by certified early childhood educators and scholastic chess coaches, this program builds academic skills through chess activities designed to capture the interest of young children. Color My Chess World introduces children to the “world of chess”: the chessboard, chess “characters” and chess play. Activities in the book introduce basic chess concepts while improving spatial skills, developing math and reading readiness skills, and reinforcing skills in listening and following directions.

Championship Chess is a division of Teachable Tech, Inc., an award-winning company of curriculum writers. Teachable Tech has designed curriculum for pre-K and K-12 for such diverse clients as the American Red Cross, the National Park Service, Social and Health Services in association with SAMHSA/HHR, CNN, Turner Broadcasting, ABC News, HBO and The Weather Channel.

Greenway EHR Software Customers Profit through PQRS Quality Reporting

Greenway EHR Software Customers Profit through PQRS Quality Reporting

Greenway’s EHR Software Solution Helps Cardiology Practice Gain $70,000 ROI by Submitting Through Company’s Registry

Carrollton, GA (PRWEB) December 19, 2010

Customers of Greenway Medical Technologies, Inc. utilizing clinical data compilation and exchange provided by Greenway's EHR software, practice management and interoperability solution PrimeSUITE® have experienced successful year-end incentive fund capture through the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The clinical data measurements and reporting functions required by PQRS mirror those of meaningful use and electronic prescribing incentives being offered to physician practices, as well as pending accountable care organization (ACO) initiatives.

"We are very pleased at Greenway that our customers are relaying to us the achievement of incentive funds, and we have been confident in their ability to do so across many family and specialty practices,” said President and CEO Tee Green. "The emergence and future of quality reporting incentive programs are important aspects of achieving an improved and more sustainable healthcare system that positively impacts patient health. PQRS, meaningful use and accountable care speak to the same evolution in quality patient care, and Greenway is dedicated to offering industry-leading technology for providers choosing to participate.”

Begun as the Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) pilot program in 2007, CMS solidified it into the permanent PQRS program in November of this year. PQRS provides a percentage bonus on all Medicare Part B allowable claims submitted by practices matched with up to three quality reporting clinical care measurements selected from up to 179 measures and 13 measure groups.

The PQRS evolution allows submission per provider or per group practice, and requires only a one-time data submission at a six - or 12-month time frame, with data transmission via a CMS-approved registry or a fully qualified electronic health record.

"Greenway is a CMS-approved registry for PQRS, and PrimeSUITE is a fully qualified EHR software solution for PQRS reporting as well, which allows practices to select the best reporting method from those CMS recognizes,” said Green. "Once a practice selects its quality reporting measurements, Greenway's technology can extract, compile and send the data, so practice managers and staff do not have to code or track the allowable claims.”

Birmingham Heart Clinic, a nine-provider cardiology practice in Birmingham, Ala., selected measures focusing on the use of antiplatelet or beta blocker therapy for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) or those with CAD and prior myocardial infarction, respectively. The practice submitted through the Greenway registry option for its allowable patient volume, and received $70,000 from CMS this fall, according to Business Administrator William Sester.

"Our practice improved the quality of care through this program,” said Sester, who said this was accomplished through the establishment of clinical alerts within PrimeSUITE to identify and assure that patients were receiving the regimen. "There was very minimal work required by the practice. We established our nine providers on the registry site and Greenway did the bulk of the work. We have every intention of continuing with these programs and we have every ambition of achieving meaningful use. We want to be one of the first practices to capture meaningful use funds in 2011.”

According to Sester, his practice sees the practicality of the convergence of incentive programs. "Although the exact future of healthcare economics is unclear, practices that report quality measures and strategically focus on improving patient care will benefit the most. If a grading process is on the horizon, we're using technology to help us be better doctors. There is a future of physician practices working very closely with hospitals, be it the ACO or medical home models. For more teamwork between IPAs and hospitals to occur, there will have to be incentives. When doctors have a financial stake in the process, it will have results.”

Palmetto Tri-County Internal Medicine of Lancaster, S. C. received a CMS payment of $27,000 this fall by reporting six allowable measures per its six providers, according to Practice Administrator Kathy Sistare.

Mound Family Practice in Miamisburg, Ohio has reported to the program since its inception in 2007, and as of the latest reporting period, had received nearly $10,000 through a single prevention and care measure focusing on its diabetic patients, according to Practice Administrator Sue Ellen Strassburger. "We have been profitable in the program every year, and plan to expand our participation to all of our doctors and protocols that PQRS is looking at. This program is extremely easy.”

Pearlsong Press to Publish new Romantic Suspense Novel by Pat Ballard

Pearlsong Press to Publish new Romantic Suspense Novel by Pat Ballard

Nashville TN-based publishing company will release next book by the Queen of Rubenesque Romances, Pat Ballard, in fall 2005.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) May 9, 2005

Pearlsong Press will publish Abigail's Revenge, a romantic suspense novel by Pat Ballard, in fall 2005.

"We're excited to add another novel by Pat to our catalog of entertaining and empowering books," publisher Peggy Elam, Ph. D. said in announcing the deal. "We hope to have the book available for sale at our booth at the Southern Festival of Books October 7-9."

Ballard has been dubbed the "Queen of Rubenesque Romances" due to her featuring plus-sized or "big beautiful" heroines in all of her works. Her previous novels (Wanted: One Groom, Nobody's Perfect, His Brother's Child, and A Worthy Heir) and short story collection, Dangerous Curves Ahead, have also been published by Pearlsong Press.

Ballard began writing motivational romance novels after dieting and starving herself from age 11 to 33, nearly destroying her health in the process. She decided to eat healthily, exercise moderately, and accept the body that followed. As her self-acceptance grew, she realized she wasn't alone in her previous body hatred.

"These books aren't just for larger women," Ballard says. "They're for women of all sizes to learn to accept themselves for the wonderful one-of-a-kind creation they are, and stop trying to look like or be someone they were never genetically programmed to be."

Her fan base is growing, with readers regularly commenting on her books' fresh attitude of self-acceptance and recognition of the natural diversity of body sizes.

Ballard's books can be purchased from online booksellers including Amazon. com and BarnesandNoble. com, as well as the retail store at the Pearlsong Press website (www. pearlsong. com), Buck Off Babes (www. buckoffbabes. com), and Borders bookstores. Other "brick and mortar" bookstores can order Ballard's books for any customer if the books are not already on their shelves.

Pearlsong Press books are available to retailers and libraries through Ingram Book Group, Baker and Taylor, Broadart Company, and Lightning Source Inc., as well as directly from the publisher (P. O. Box 58065, Nashville, TN 37205, 1-866-4-A-PEARL, sales@pearlsong. com).

The Nashville, TN-based publishing company was founded by Elam, a psychologist and former journalist, to promote holistic and empowering fiction and nonfiction and the "Health at Every Size" approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Short Winter Days Mean It's Time to Top Up Your Vitamin D

Short Winter Days Mean It's Time to Top Up Your Vitamin D

When the sun is not enough, add Vitamin D from food sources and supplements

Bellingham, WA (Vocus) October 18, 2010

As we approach the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year – it's clear that in many areas of North America, sunshine is in short supply. What's more startling is that many North Americans – studies suggest 30-50% – are deficient in the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D.

According to nutrition expert Gloria Tsang, founder of HealthCastle. com, Vitamin D deficiency is an issue all year long, not just during winter days with few sunshine hours – but the winter season is an especially important time to ensure good Vitamin D levels, since the sunshine vitamin helps protect against winter flu. "We call Vitamin D the sunshine vitamin," Tsang says, "But the reality is that most people don't get enough Vitamin D from the sun at any time of year – especially since it's now so important to protect our skin from the damaging effects of the sun. We can get some Vitamin D from food sources, but the truth is that just about everyone should be taking a Vitamin D supplement, too."

In addition to helping fight the flu, Vitamin D has other important effects in the body. It aids calcium and phosphorus absorption, helping prevent bone diseases like rickets and osteoporosis, and studies have shown that is has a strong association with lowered cancer risk. Here are 5 key ways to get more Vitamin D:
Feast on fish: Fatty fish, like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel, as well as cod liver oil, are the best food sources of Vitamin D.

Enjoy eggs: Egg yolks contain small amounts of Vitamin D3.

Find fortified foods: Milk fortified with Vitamin D virtually eliminated rickets in the 1930s, and is still a prime source of Vitamin D today. Other Vitamin D-fortified foods include breakfast cereals, yogurt, and orange juice.

Munch on mushrooms: Some mushrooms contain Vitamin D2, including some mushrooms grown in conditions specifically designed to boost Vitamin D content.

Be safe; take a supplement: Expert opinions vary on how much Vitamin D we need (some experts recommend up to 1000 IU per day for adults), but most agree we're not getting enough. Since it's hard to absorb Vitamin D from food sources, your safest best is to take a supplement, especially in the winter.

Of course, we all get some of our Vitamin D supply from the sun – but increasing your sun exposure to up your Vitamin D intake is not a good idea, since the potential risks to your skin outweigh the benefits of the additional Vitamin D. Focus on eating Vitamin D-containing foods instead, and top up your intake with a good supplement. More healthy eating tips from registered dietitians are available at http://www. AP9 Simple Escapes Offers Ideas for Many Affordably Fun Dates

AP9 Simple Escapes Offers Ideas for Many Affordably Fun Dates

AP9 simple escapes helps you get out there with the one you like -- for less.

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) January 16, 2007

Norwalk, Conn. (PRWeb) January 16, 2007… So you're single and dating. A lot. And it's fun, but it can also become very expensive. How do you keep on dating that "special someone" -- or perhaps with a couple of people -- without breaking the bank? AP9 SimpleEscapes (http://www. simpleescapes-program. com/), a leading travel and entertainment savings program offered by Adaptive Marketing LLC, has some simple and practical solutions for you.

An unforgettable date requires some planning and lots of creativity. AP9 SimpleEscapes (http://www. simpleescapes-program. com/SimpleEscapes_ResourceCenter. html) members can take advantage of money-saving benefits even if they're going out on dates every weekend, including savings at perfect date-making retailers all over the country, from movie theatres and restaurants to bookstores and traveling options. With so many date options to choose from, here are just a few ideas:

-- The all-time classic. Movies are a great choice for dates if certain rules are followed. Don't go to the movies on a blind date, unless you definitely know the other person likes the idea of spending two hours in a dark room with a stranger. Choose the movie theatre as an option if you already know the person you are going on a date with, and if possible, make the choice of movies a mutual decision.

-- Play a game. If the other half of the date agrees, a night of role-play can be a lot of fun! Pick an Italian restaurant, and try to speak as much Italian as you can, make up words or say a few lines from famous Italian movies. Ask the server for a traditional dish you've never tried, and discover a new flavor together. You can laugh at yourselves and bring new topics of conversations to the table.

-- Hit the road. Traveling -- close to or far from your home -- is a good way to meet people with dating potential, especially if you go to singles-oriented places (signing up for a beach or a ski house is a great idea). On the other hand, a weekend getaway with the person you're dating will allow you to see each other in a different light. Getting out of the comfort zone is one way to discover new things about yourself and other people.

-- Public meeting. It's easier to feel more relaxed if the date occurs in a neutral zone or a public place, so you don't feel under the spotlight. What about a bookstore? Most have a coffee shop inside, so you can feel at ease surrounded by people and finding topics to talk about among books and magazines. You can even spend time picking a book to read together and discuss later on over the phone or, ideally, on another date a couple of days later.

"What to do on my next date?" is a much easier question to answer when you have a variety of ways to have fun while saving money, reports AP9 Simple Escapes.

About Pork Barrel BBQ
Pork Barrel BBQ was founded in December 2008 during the peak of the economic crisis to prove that a company not owned or operated by the federal government could succeed, and that if you had a good idea, it was still possible to grab a piece of the American Dream. Pork Barrel BBQ founders, Heath Hall and Brett Thompson, ran the company out of the basement of their houses, selling their award winning BBQ products one bottle at a time. In less than one year, their Pork Barrel BBQ Sauces and Spice Rub were carried in over 1,000 stores in 38 states. Throughout their journey, they have stayed true to their mission – to unite the nation through the great tradition of BBQ, and bring bipartisan flavor to your next meal. The Pork Barrel BBQ Competition BBQ Team entered its first contest, The Safeway National Capital Barbecue Battle, in June 2009, and walked away with two trophies – Second Place in the “Nations Best BBQ Sauce Contest” and Fourth Place for their pulled pork in the Memphis In May portion of the contest. Since then, the team has won multiple awards, including the “People’s Choice” award for best BBQ sauce in 2010 and other notable Memphis and May and Kansas City Barbecue Society BBQ competition accolades. Infant Hurt by Mother’s Odor

Infant Hurt by Mother’s Odor

Bacterial vaginosis has been discovered as a cause of certain health risks for newborns.

Memphis, TN (PRWEB) February 23, 2006

“Among pregnant women, bacterial vaginosis may cause up to 10% of low-birth weight deliveries, and in several studies has been strongly implicated in increasing women's risks of becoming infected with other STD and with HIV,” reported Xagena Medicine.

Bacterial vaginosis is not caused by poor hygiene. Many women are struggling to find a permanent cure. Often this condition is treated with antibiotics, but they are often expensive, ineffective, and may not rid patients of the problem completely.

One company in Memphis believes they have a natural solution to get rid of bacterial vaginosis. A spokesman for Selmedica Healthcare Corporation said, “It doesn't mask the symptoms of BV, it eliminates the odor and the painful itching and swelling that goes along with it. Enzara is a 100% natural and safe treatment for BV and the burning, itching, and fishy odor that accompanies it.”

Charmaine McKenzie was suffering depression because nothing seemed to cure her vaginal odor. “I was skeptical because I had the odor for so long that I though I would live with this for the rest of my life. For over a year my doctors had me on metro-gel which didn't work for me.”

McKenzie had resigned to living the rest of her life with this problem. Then she turned to Enzara. “I tried Enzara and in three days the odor was gone,” McKenzie said.

“I’m a Celeb-ratty...Get Me Out of Here”

Yet again, as another series of “I’m a celebrity..” ends, the animals used in the making of the programme outshine the B-list celebrities on TV. While the contestants can now go back to their nice, warm homes, those surviving animals who stay behind have nothing to look forward to except another series where they will be used and abused for UK TV audiences

(PRWEB) December 18, 2005

Yet again, as another series of “I’m a celebrity...” ends, the animals used in the making of the programme outshine the B-list celebrities on TV. While the contestants can now go back to their nice, warm homes, those surviving animals who stay behind have nothing to look forward to except another series where they will be used and abused for UK TV audiences.

Cavyrescue – the UK’s first dedicated rodent rescue and welfare charity– are just one of a number of animal organisations and individuals nationwide campaigning for this mindless cruelty to stop.

Jason Hulott from the charity says: “Despite all the protests of previous years’, the latest show was the worst yet for the animals. Unfortunately rats were the number one phobia for most of the contestants and domestic rats were used in at least eight trials, all of them cruel and placing the animals in constant fear, and danger of being injured and trampled on and worse.

“Domestic rats are more akin to living in comfortable cages in people’s homes and - cruelty aside - this sort of environment is not only alien to them but potentially life threatening as it brings on medical conditions such as respiratory disease.

“Worst of all, there were some tails presented for the contestants to eat, along with parts of kangaroo and crocodile. This show goes out all over the world and is presenting a disgusting example of how to treat animals for entertainment.”

The charity is urging people to put a stop to this mindless cruelty by campaigning until the TV production company stop using rats and treat all the other animals appropriately in their show.

First Crowdsourced Book on Endometriosis Released

137 Women Share Experiences, Treatments for Painful Chronic Health Condition

Mountain View, CA (PRWEB) March 12, 2009

CureTogether, a Health 2.0 Startup based in Silicon Valley, today released the first crowdsourced book on endometriosis. Assembled from the input of 137 women living with this common, but poorly understood condition, "Endometriosis Heroes" is the product of an ongoing online research study at http://www. curetogether. com (http://www. curetogether. com).

"Patients came together and decided what symptoms and treatments they wanted to track. They went on to diligently gather detailed, quantitative data on their bodies and experiences," said Alexandra Carmichael, co-Founder of CureTogether. "The hope of this book is to spread awareness, reach out to people in pain who may not have heard of endometriosis, and increase interest and funding for future research."

"Many other women who are suffering will find this very helpful and inspiring," said Elizabeth Rummer, MSPT at the Pelvic Health and Rehabilitation Center in San Francisco. A patient with endometriosis added, "This is great. I am just starting to really appreciate what awesome power CureTogether can have."

Endometriosis is a painful chronic condition that affects 5-10% of women. It's one of the most active condition communities at CureTogether, with information about symptoms, treatments, and causes added by over 130 women with endometriosis. The "Endometriosis Heroes" book is available at http://www. curetogether. com/EHeroes (http://www. curetogether. com/EHeroes).

About CureTogether
