Local Artisan Sends Toronto Adults Living in Poverty to Camp This Summer

Local Artisan Sends Toronto Adults Living in Poverty to Camp This Summer

Local artisan Darlene Martin has partnered with Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) to provide a Canadian camp experience for adults living in poverty through proceeds from her "Summer in Parkdale" exhibit.

Toronto (PRWEB) July 22, 2009

For over two decades, PARC (www. parc. on. ca) has provided a safe haven and personal betterment opportunities for adults living in poverty in Toronto through extensive programming. Each year PARC serves over 2000 individuals (referred to as members), half of whom have a significant history with the mental health system and half living in poverty - many with addictions, many with multiple barriers such as developmental delays, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Acquired Brain Injury.

Members are predominantly single, male, and between the ages of 36 and 65. In keeping with a Canadian tradition, one of PARC's programs provides the opportunity for 40-50 of its members to experience the great outdoors at Camp Kandalore in Minden, Ontario. This summer, Darlene Martin of Bijouxbead (www. bijouxbead. com) will be helping to fund these efforts through her "Summer in Parkdale" collection being shown at Made You Look Jewellery Gallery, 1338 Queen Street West until August 31st.

Victor Willis, Executive Director of PARC, has been involved with the organization for twenty years and has seen the positive effects of the Camp Kandalore program first hand. "From day one we observed the dramatic effect of providing members with a respite from their daily surroundings. As PARC members got off the bus and walked around the grounds, sat on the dock, explored the trails and paddled on the lake, it was as if many of the symptoms simply melted away," Willis recalls. "This experience reinforced for us that often the symptoms of mental illness are the symptoms of poverty, lack of options, few choices and the environments people are relegated to live and survive within."

Learning of PARC's programs after a previous showing of her work in the area, Martin realized that she could combine her business with fundraising. "After my first opening in the neighbourhood, I decided that I would have a special exhibition in Parkdale to benefit PARC," Martin says. "I also want to inspire people to learn more about Parkdale's history, challenges, art and culture." To meet these goals, Martin created the Summer in Parkdale collection with a portion of sales directed to PARC. The collection includes necklaces named for the three main estates forming Parkdale - O'Hara, Gwynne, and Dunn - and local landmarks. Martin says the colour palette was specifically chosen to represent a toughness paired with a calm, soft feel that echoes the dichotomy of the neighbourhood. Willis notes that 100% of the donated funds from Summer in Parkdale will go directly to supporting programs. "We were fortunate to be approached by Darlene and are thrilled with her identifying us as the beneficiaries of her generosity," Willis comments.

About PARC
The Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC) is a drop-in community centre located in the west end of Toronto, an area known for its harsh social climate. PARC is located at 1499 Queen Street West and can be reached at 416-537-2262 or online at www. parc. on. ca.

About Summer in Parkdale
Honouring Parkdale's story, challenges and reputation as a destination for local contemporary art & culture, this exclusive collection from Bijouxbead combines alluring metal, stone and glass in hues ranging from steel to pewter to blue. Exhibition currently open until August 31, 2009 at Made You Look Jewellery Gallery, 1338 Queen Street West.

This is the seventh playground built by Keystone Mercy since the inception of its program in 2007. The playground will be built in one day, on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, by more than 25 Keystone Mercy Health Plan, Wachovia Bank and community volunteers.

ADDING MULTIMEDIA Real Estate Market Expected to Improve with New President : New Survey Shows Demand Growing as Buyers Struggle to Overcome Barriers

ADDING MULTIMEDIA Real Estate Market Expected to Improve with New President : New Survey Shows Demand Growing as Buyers Struggle to Overcome Barriers

Nearly half of all home buyers1 (44%) believe the housing market will improve once the new President takes office in January, 2009, according to a new survey released today conducted by Harris Interactive® and commissioned by Move, Inc. (NASDAQ:MOVE), the leader in online real estate and operator of Realtor. com®, the most visited real estate site on the Web.

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) July 15, 2008

Forty-eight percent of women and 41 percent of men who plan to buy a home in the current market said they think the housing market will get better once the new President is in office.

At the same time, 81% of home buyers are still nervous about the current housing market and report the existence of barriers between them and home ownership. Today's home buyers perceive the cost of a down payment (28%), their annual income level (20%), lack of confidence in the economy (26%) and high home prices (31%), especially in the Western states (39%) as barriers to buying a home.

Despite these reservations, the survey indicates underlying demand for homeownership is healthy. While nearly half (41%) of current homeowners do plan to purchase a home again, 80% of all renters plan to purchase a home someday with 47% planning to purchase a home within the next five years. More people who plan to move will do so for space-related (26%) and life-stage change reasons (17%), such as having children (2%) or downsizing to a smaller residence (9%), not financial ones including an increase in rent (2%) or an expensive mortgage (less than 1/2%).

Most home buyers (78%) are also willing to make sacrifices to save and earn extra income for down payments and will compromise on neighborhood features and residential amenities in order to buy a home in the current market. Many of their choices may reflect changing values, including a growing concern over the environment, the importance of community features and the rising cost of fuel.

"These findings show that despite the difficulties home buyers face in the wake of the subprime crisis and their concerns about economic uncertainty, underlying demand appears relatively strong. Consumers see better times coming," said Lorna Borenstein, president of Move, Inc. "This is great news to us and our colleagues in the real estate industry. As the leader in online real estate, we pay close attention to consumer perceptions and behaviors. This important feedback enables us to identify ways in which we can enhance the search experience so it meets the needs of today's consumers who will become the homebuyers of tomorrow."

Buyers Face Barriers to Homeownership

While about four out of five home buyers (81%) say they face barriers to buying a home in the current market, the greatest single barrier to homeownership today is high home prices (31%), a concern that was much higher in the West (39%), than in the South (27%) or Midwest (26%).

The second greatest barrier keeping buyers out of the current market is coming up with the money for a down payment (28%), with lack of confidence in the economy (26%) ranking third. Financial concerns generally are higher among people in the West (45%) compared to the South (33%) and about one-third of those ages 18 – 34 said lack of money (38%) or poor credit (18%) is a concern compared to only 11% and 5% (respectively) of those 55+.

Four out of five adults (84%) say there is something about buying a home that is intimidating, and one out of three (34%) say money-related issues being a concern. Finding the right home is the most intimidating part of the home-buying process for about one out of five (19%). About two thirds of adults (62%) have visited an online real estate web site and once on the site, 23 percent are looking to purchase and 52 percent are looking at what's on the market.

"This survey surfaced important feedback that Realtor. com addresses by delivering the largest and freshest collection of listings and new features like Find a Neighborhood and Find Home Values to empower consumers," said Realtor. com President Errol Samuelson. "We want to help remove uncertainties from the home buying process by making it as transparent and as consumer-friendly as possible. Providing the most comprehensive information, relevant tools and connections to local Realtors are only a few of the many resources consumers will find at Realtor. com to help make the process of buying and selling a home easier and less stressful."

Trade-offs Favor Community, Environment

Today, adults rank crime rates (56%), proximity to daily conveniences (47%) and property taxes (46%) as the top three factors in choosing a neighborhood. Home buyers are more willing to sacrifice cultural and recreational amenities (18%) than green features (16%) like solar heating and energy-saving appliances, or forego proximity to work (7%) and daily conveniences (11%) to buy a house in today's real estate market.

Concern over the cost of gasoline and the importance of community is evident in the importance buyers place on accessibility. Only seven percent of home buyers would be willing to sacrifice proximity to work and six percent, proximity to shopping. Only three percent would give up proximity to public transportation in order to buy a home in today's real estate market.

About half of adults (49%) say green features like solar panels, energy saving appliances and low usage water heaters are "important" features. More care about green features (49%) than luxury amenities (31%), yet some would give up green features (9%) before storage (7%), luxury amenities (7%) or numbers of bedrooms or bathrooms (6%). Women rate green features higher than men (52% to 46%) and consumers aged 18 – 34 years of age rate green features the lowest (40%).

Kitchens (67%) and the number of bedrooms (69%) are the most important features today's buyers are looking for in a home. Storage space (66%) and the number of bathrooms (62%) rank three and four on their list of priorities.

Mortgages are a Mystery

Understanding mortgages and the financing process during these times of change in the credit industry is a major issue with a large number of buyers. Eighty-one percent of today's home buyers and three quarters of adults (78%) say they wish the process of taking out a mortgage was easier to understand. In fact, some say that either understanding financing (9%) or the uncertainty of the mortgage process (6%) is the most intimidating part of buying a home.

For many buyers, changes in the amount of a down payment required for a mortgage is a significant issue. The lack of cash for a down payment is keeping about one quarter (28%) of buyers out of homes--more than those who have poor credit (15%), low household income (20%) or those who lack of confidence in the economy (26%).

Seventy-eight percent of home buyers are willing to make sacrifices to save money or earn extra income in order to be able to buy a home in the current real estate market. First to go would be spending (65%) on items such as personal luxuries (46%) and clothes, shoes and accessories (43%). Next, home buyers would go out less often (52%). Nearly half would clip coupons (47%) and 27% would cancel a vacation.

THE ITALIAN LETTER Published by Rodale

THE ITALIAN LETTER Published by Rodale

How the Bush Administration Used a Fake Letter to Build the Case for War in Iraq By Peter Eisner and Knut Royce "It's the best account so far of one of the enduring mysteries of the Bush White House and its race to sell the Iraq war to the American public. It's not just about the 16 words. Everything that would go wrong is telegraphed in this incident." - Seymour Hersh, author of Chain of Command: The Road from 9/11 to Abu Ghraib The Italian Letter conveys "...the duplicity, subterfuge, propaganda, and outright lies that helped sell many Americans on the need to invade Iraq. Read the book and weep for our democracy." - Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell, 2002-05

NEW YORK (PRWEB) April 4, 2007

In a front page story reported in today's Washington Post author Peter Eisner says, "It was 3 a. m. in Italy on Jan. 29, 2003, when President Bush in Washington began reading his State of the Union address that included the now famous -- later retracted -- 16 words: "The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." The uranium claim would become a crucial justification for the invasion of Iraq that began less than two months later. When occupying troops found no nuclear program, the 16 words and how they came to be in the speech became a focus for critics in Washington and foreign capitals to press the case that the White House manipulated facts to take the United States to war. Dozens of interviews with current and former intelligence officials and policymakers in the United States, Britain, France and Italy show that the Bush administration disregarded key information available at the time showing that the Iraq-Niger claim was highly questionable. In February 2002, the CIA received the verbatim text of one of the documents, filled with errors easily identifiable through a simple Internet search, the interviews show. Many low - and mid-level intelligence officials were already skeptical that Iraq was in pursuit of nuclear weapons." The excerpt is from THE ITALIAN LETTER by Peter Eisner and Knut Royce which Rodale Books published today.

Filled with headline-making discoveries and never-before told findings, THE ITALIAN LETTER: How the Bush Administration Used a Fake Letter to Build the Case for the War in Iraq (April 3, 2007, Rodale, $24.95) offers the definitive examination of the facts behind the forged intelligence document used by the Bush administration as a basis for going to war with Iraq. Award-winning investigative journalists Peter Eisner and Knut Royce now provide the first book to uncover the details of the intelligence corruption that altered the course of contemporary history and the role of the United States in world politics.

The Italian letter, a fraudulent intelligence document that provided evidence that the African country of Niger was prepared to supply Iraq with 500 tons of uranium for nuclear weapons, first surfaced in Rome in a dossier of forged documents in the fall of 2001. It made its way to the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Security Council, the White House, including Vice President Cheney and President Bush, and eventually the American public via the President's January 28, 2003 State of the Union address, where George Bush said "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." The Italian letter and the "16 words" derived from it became a critical vehicle that the Bush Administration used to convince Congress and America that Saddam Hussein was seeking materials to make a nuclear bomb.

Throughout their investigation, reporters Eisner and Royce sought out dozens of current and former intelligence officials, as well as policymakers in the United States, Britain, Italy and France, many of whom were willing to speak on the record about the conversations, documents and directives they witnessed or were privy to.

THE ITALIAN LETTER examines the following questions:

-- Why did the CIA forgo a simple Google search of the initial Italian letter "verbatim text,"which would have automatically discredited the forged document upon arrival?

-- How did knowingly false intelligence move so high up the political food chain?

-- Did Bush, Cheney or their aides knowingly use false information to lead the nation into war?

-- Why did the Bush administration order American intelligence to spy on U. N. inspectors who were unable to confirm U. S. claims that Iraq had a nuclear weapons program?

-- Why did the Bush White House alter the CIA vetting process, leading to inclusion of the "16 words"in the State of the Union address?

-- Why did a top CIA official, Alan Foley, promote the issue of Iraqi weapons, when he told friends in private that he doubted any would be found after the invasion?

-- Why to this day does Cheney still believe there are Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq?

Like Barbara Tuchman's 1958 classic, The Zimmerman Telegram, about the decoded German wire that drew the United States into World War I, or Michael Gordon's recent bestseller Cobra II: The Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq, THE ITALIAN LETTER traces the road to war by following the scandal surrounding the initial pieces of intelligence.

As frustration over the increasing death toll in Iraq continues to grow, with no successful exit strategy in sight, this timely, page-turning narrative looks to answer these questions while providing important insights for a nation hungry for greater understanding of the Iraq War and the manipulated intelligence document behind it.

Innovation Fund Decides to Offer Its Issued and Pending Patents Exclusively to Microsoft Corporation

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 22, 2006

Innovation Fund LLC (www. innfund. com), which already has patents issued in the field of Location Based Advertising, has been developing proposals to go to the leaders in the field, which include Microsoft, Google, and Time Warner, as well as the telecom companies. The Innovation Fund basic patent has been granted and there are continuations-in-part that are current. In making the determination to present a proposal for exclusivity to Microsoft first, Innovation Fund was obviously aware of Google’s openly stated objectives to WiFi cities in exchange for location based advertising.

“However,” says Donald Spector, “while being a first mover Google’s patents are relatively new, and the Innovation Fund patents quite some time ago envisioned the fact that people not only can be located by geopositioning but contacted, changing the face of retailing.” Spector believes that this might be the largest area of advertising; and that the positioning of being able to call up people and contact them with special offers is going to eclipse the idea that people are going to look up innumerable websites. It is going to require a company that knows how to provide value to the consumer so that this does not become Spam. “If you call someone and offer them a $10,000 promotional bonus from GM while they are standing in a Honda showroom, they probably will not get mad. We are not going to be bugging people with 25 cent offers. Shopping malls, restaurants, entertainment venues and the travel industry will be able to give consumers great bargains on items that otherwise would lose value. Tickets to a game that is not sold out can be directed to a passing car making the customer an ‘offer he can’t refuse,’” says Spector. “Remember,” he adds, “we already know who likes baseball.”

But why Microsoft instead of Google? Spector says that for a long time the debate about dumb terminals and developed broadcasting over the Internet has been an interesting debate. Spector, an inventor with hundreds of patents, has the greatest respect for both sides. However, he believes that while websites themselves (and portals such as AOL and MSN) might become more sophisticated, the public policy concerns over information will require smart PC’s, and for that Microsoft is the King. In many ways, while Wall Street does not appreciate what is arguably the greatest company in the history of the world, Microsoft is far from stagnant.

Donald Spector, whose passion is heath and education; he is Chairman of New York College of Health Professions (www. nycollege. edu), has developed systems for teaching children at early ages using baby phonics. He says, “It is a disgrace that the child’s brain is most accepting of learning in the first three years of life and we start education at age five. With computers we can narrow the digital divide and give children a better start.” Spector has also noticed that his patent portfolios dedicated to children are of great use to the aged. “The elderly know how to communicate, but the people in the hospitals don’t have time to understand them. Many children know what elderly people are trying to say, but someone at the hospital just doesn’t have the time. Computers can provide an interface to help children and the infirmed,” he explains. “And the power of software in PC’s and other devices has not even begun. How short sighted are the analysts who don’t understand that we have not started to use computers for all kinds of everyday applications in health, education and lifestyle. It is the Microsofts of the world that have this vision in front of them, and they are being discounted by those with myopic vision.” Spector intends to donate a portion of his proceeds to New York College, as well as other health institutions, that need help into the future. Unlike Bill Gates, Spector sees health as an endemic politic problem that is not just waiting for cures but is being undercut by global development in developing nations and multinational corporations without regard for longer term consequences. When asked about the fact that he lives off multinational corporations, Spector replied, “It is not one or the other. We have to be more creative if we are going to reverse the Darwinian forces on the planet in the name of compassion.”

In any event, Microsoft will have the first crack at the Geo-positioning technologies of Innovation Fund, a move that might make the first movers of the world gain a bit more respect for the giants of industry and those that have envisioned the future for a while.

Innovation Fund LLC owns proprietary technologies from Computer and Satellite technologies to Consumer products and Entertainment properties. It licenses to or joint ventures with Fortune 500 companies and is a worldwide leader in innovation.

Mobile Operators - Fully Engaged

Mobile Operators - Fully Engaged

Research and Markets (http://www. researchandmarkets. com/reports/c9907) has announced the addition of Mobile Operators - Fully Engaged to their offering

(PRWEB) November 25, 2004

Derek Wanless, an advisor to the UK government, has highlighted the need for a fully engaged healthcare scenario within which public health becomes the responsibility of a range of organisations as well as the individual. Mobile operators could become key players in a fully engaged healthcare scenario. They have access to the wireless technology needed to support a wide range of mobile healthcare services. They also have access to the youth market - a demographic group that is often beyond the reach of traditional healthcare providers.

We have identified three areas where mobile healthcare is applicable within a fully engaged healthcare scenario:-

Supplying Dietary Information.

Some food stores have already installed hand held wireless scanners that allow shoppers to scan products as they add them to their shopping trolley. These systems are capable of providing healthcare related information about products - such as ingredients that can cause allergic reactions. RFID labelling and scanning devices that can be used with mobile handsets will become key drivers in this market.

Fitness and Training.

Smart mobile handsets could be used to upload training programs into exercise equipment. This service could prove particularly compelling and profitable. It would also exploit the mobile operatorÂ’s access to young people whose lack of physical activity is worrying policymakers in the healthcare sector.

Health Monitoring.

Technology, such as wireless enabled scales and blood pressure monitors, can be used to support mobile patient monitoring services. These services can be used to monitor compliance with weight loss plans and gather data prior to a patientÂ’s visit to a GP.

Who should purchase this report:-

Mobile network operators.

Wireless equipment vendors.

Healthcare providers.

Handset and PDA manufacturers.

Decision makers in the public healthcare sector.

Investors in the healthcare sector.

Other organisations active in ehealth provision.

Discovery of Stem Cell Illuminates Human Brain Evolution, Points To Therapies

UCSF scientists have discovered a new stem cell in the developing human brain. The cell produces nerve cells that help form the neocortex – the site of higher cognitive function -- and likely accounts for the dramatic expansion of the region in the lineages that lead to man, the researchers say.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) May 26, 2010

UCSF scientists have discovered a new stem cell in the developing human brain. The cell produces nerve cells that help form the neocortex – the site of higher cognitive function -- and likely accounts for the dramatic expansion of the region in the lineages that lead to man, the researchers say.

Future studies of these cells are expected to shed light on developmental diseases such as autism and schizophrenia and malformations of brain development, including microcephaly, lissencephaly and neuronal migration disorders, they say, as well as age-related illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies also will allow scientists to track the molecular steps that the cell goes through as it evolves into the nerve cell, or neuron, it produces. This information could then be used to prompt embryonic stem cells to differentiate in the culture dish into neurons for potential use in cell-replacement therapy.
The study is reported in a recent issue of the journal Nature, (vol. no. 464, 554-561; issue 7288).

“This discovery has the potential to transform our understanding of the development and evolution of the human neocortex, the most uniquely human part of the central nervous system,” says the senior author of the study, neurologist Arnold Kriegstein, MD, PhD, director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF.

“It also should inform our understanding of developmental diseases and advance the creation of cell-based therapies. Many neurological diseases develop in neurons or the neural circuits between them. If we’re going to understand how these disorders develop, we have to better understand how the human and primate cerebral cortex develops.”

In rodents and humans, the developing cortex contains a layer of neural stem cells called radial glial cells that resides near the fluid-filled ventricles and produces cells that are precursors to neurons. These precursor neurons further proliferate in a region known as the subventricular zone (SVZ), to increase their numbers, and then differentiate into newborn neurons. The neurons then migrate along radial glial fibers up to the neocortex, where they help form the tissue that is the site of sensory perception, motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought and language.

In human and nonhuman primates, however, the SVZ has a massively expanded outer region, known as the outer subventricular zone (OSVZ). About 20 years ago, scientists presumed that the OSVZ also contained stem cells, but until now they have lacked evidence.

In the current study, lead authors David V. Hansen, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow, and Jan H. Lui, a graduate student in the Kriegstein lab, examined the OSVZ, using new labeling and tracking techniques to follow individual cells and their progeny over time in cultured tissue slices from fetal cortex tissue that had been donated for research.

They characterized two kinds of cells within the region -- both the novel neural stem cell and its daughter cell, known as the transit amplifying cell. The stem cell closely resembles the radial glial cell in structure and behavior and, like the radial glia, has radial fibers which newborn neurons migrate along up to the neocortex.

The region is a busy hub of cell proliferation. The stem cell undergoes asymmetrical cell division, giving rise to two distinct daughter cells -- one a copy of the original stem cell, the other a transit amplifying cell. The transit amplifying cell undergoes multiple rounds of symmetrical divisions before all of its daughter cells begin the process of differentiating into neurons.

“We are very interested in understanding how these modes of division are regulated,” says Kriegstein. “We suspect that faults in cell-cycle regulation account for a variety of developmental brain diseases.”

More broadly, he says the team wants to understand how the new stem cells compare to radial glial cells and how the two sets of neurons they produce integrate in the neocortex. “Neurons are probably being generated in both the SVZ and OSVZ at once,” he says. “They likely end up in the same layer of the neocortex as they migrate into position and start forming circuits.

“This suggests to us that there may be a mosaic of cell types in the human neocortex, in which there are cells that originate in the traditional zone and cells produced in the newer zone that intermix in the cortex. The complexity of primate neocortex may be significantly increased by the interaction of the evolutionarily-speaking ‘younger’ neurons with those originating in the more primitive zone.”

The massive number of cells within the OSVZ of humans “tells us we have to be careful when modeling human brain diseases in mice,” says Kriegstein. “Especially in the neocortex -- the most highly developed part of the brain in primates and humans – there are going to be important differences between rodents and humans.”
The other co-author of the study was Philip R. L. Parker, a graduate student in the Kriegstein lab.

The study was funded by grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and the Bernard Osher Foundation.

Leading Market Research Firm Finds Significant ROI from Using CA's Enterprise IT Management Solutions to Improve IT Economics and Gain Business Value : Eight Companies Surveyed Experienced an Average ROI of 433% over a Three-year Period

CA, Inc. (NASDAQ: CA) today announced the availability of an IDC White Paper* that quantifies the benefits, cost savings, and return on investment (ROI) that can be achieved by using CA's Enterprise IT Management (EITM) software products to help govern, manage and secure IT infrastructure and operations. All eight companies interviewed in the CA-sponsored White Paper experienced positive ROI from deploying CA EITM solutions. The average ROI was 433% over a three-year period and the companies experienced payback of their initial investment in less than one year.

LAS VEGAS (PRWEB) November 17, 2008

The use of automated IT management software tools typically brings direct benefits to IT operations, company business services, and end-users in terms of IT productivity, user productivity, cost savings, and revenue increase. These areas were the principal focus of the IDC White Paper, which was comprised of in-depth surveys with North American companies in the entertainment, telecommunications, finance, computer services, and management services industries. The survey asked about their use of one or more CA EITM solutions in the three functional areas: Application Performance Management, Infrastructure Management, and Service Management.

On average each company deployed between two and three CA EITM solutions. While each functional area had different costs and benefits, IDC found that there was a positive trend in deploying solutions from multiple functional areas. Deploying solutions from a single functional area yielded $46,000 in annual benefits per 100 users and an ROI of 277%; deploying solutions from two groups delivered $74,000 per 100 users in benefits and an ROI of 417%; deploying solutions from all three groups led to $104,000 in annual benefits per 100 users and an ROI of 516%.

The most significant benefit generated by CA's EITM solutions is the automation of IT tasks and the subsequent increase in IT productivity. Increased IT productivity accounted for 61.4% of total benefits for the CA customers. The companies were able to reduce application downtime significantly, increasing the available hours of productive work. Improvements in user productivity accounted for an average of 21.8% of total benefits. Other major benefits included average direct cost saving of $9,621 per 100 users and average revenue increase of $3,190 per 100 users.

"The downturn in the world economy has driven IT economics, especially the cost of IT operations, to the forefront of concerns of enterprises, service providers and governments," said Ajei Gopal, executive vice president and general manager of CA's EITM Group. "The results of IDC's ROI White Paper clearly demonstrate the business value of using CA EITM solutions."

White Paper Highlights By Functional Area

Application Performance Management

Four of the eight companies interviewed had deployed the CA Wily Application Performance Management solution, which is comprised of CA Wily Introscope and CA Wily Customer Experience Manager. The most important benefits are as follows:

The time required to implement applications has been reduced and application performance delays have been cut by 71%. Customers use EITM across their companies to assess risk. CA Wily APM has helped customers become more proactive. Now they know when a problem is going to occur and take steps to prevent it. In the event that an error dictates a system restart, technicians are able to continue running applications without losing any information. As a result, downtime has been reduced by 70%. In some cases, while the number of users or devices has not changed, operational efficiency has been improved by decreasing the mean time to repair (MTTR). By helping to more quickly identify where problems are in the system, the CA Wily APM solution helped to reduce MTTR for applications by 50%. Since the deployment of the CA Wily APM solution, data collected from end-users is now more accurate, leading to fewer errors in the company applications. In addition, performance tracking has helped ensure high quality support. Applications associated help desk calls have been reduced by 20%. Infrastructure Management

Six of the eight companies interviewed had deployed CA Infrastructure Management solutions, including CA eHealth Network Performance Manager (NPM), CA SPECTRUM Network Fault Manager (NFM), CA NSM, CA Insight Database Monitor for Distributed Databases, and CA Insight for DB2 for z/OS. The most important benefits are as follows:

Customers have a better understanding of their bandwidth capacity and only buy more bandwidth when it is truly needed. There is a more firm grasp on network topology and better utilization of existing assets. Bandwidth and networking costs have been reduced by 50%. Customers are able to detect poor service levels and also predict when a failure will occur. The organizations can then employ redundant devices and react before the end-user is aware of the problem. Help desk calls have been reduced by 40%. An increase in service levels, decrease in service delivery cost and increased availability of clients' systems have led to a reduction in downtime of 30%. CA customers also enjoy several business benefits. They are able to expand to meet new business demands such as streaming video and voice over IP. After the deployment, the network requires fewer full-time employees (FTEs) to maintain and some IT staff has been reassigned to other business critical roles. Administrators can now monitor multiple databases on different platforms from single console. IT staff productivity is improved, as the number of devices grows each year the IT head count remains constant. IT Service Management

All of the companies interviewed had deployed CA IT Service Management solutions, including CA CMDB, CA Unicenter Service Desk (now called CA Service Desk Manager), CA Service Catalog, CA Service Assure, CA Service Metric Analysis and CA Software Change Manager. The most important benefits are as follows:

Incident response times are improved and customers have well defined processes for resolving errors. The CA tools have allowed the customers to reduce errors, produce management reports with ease, and analyze historical data. Customers are also able to manage the amount of change happening in the environment and improve system uptime. With incident, problem, and change management solutions deployed, customers are also better able to manage their services, assets and capacity. The total reduction in downtime has been 20%. Service desk administrators are now able to handle more calls. There is an increasing percentage of automated trouble tickets and reports to management. Overall, IT productivity has risen by 25%. There has been improvement in application stability, which allows for better organizational coordination and tool integration. IT departments discover potential incidents faster and find root causes more quickly. The CA solutions have also reduced the effort required in auditing processes. As a result, audits have become easier to pass. Customers have avoided creating new IT positions and reallocated staff more efficiently. The staff has been able to take a more proactive role in promoting ITIL processes and improving their IT maturity level. * IDC White Paper sponsored by CA, "Improving IT Economics and Gaining Business Value with CA's Enterprise IT Management Software: An ROI Study," Doc # 214817, November 2008

Learn The Procedures Of Dog Paper Training For A Healthier And Cleaner Environment

House training a puppy does not need to be difficult, but it is important to take the process seriously, plan ahead and take things slowly. Some dogs will be easier to house break than others, so it important to work with your dog.

(PRWEB) January 25, 2006

House training is one of the most important elements of creating a well trained dog and trusted family member. Problems with house training and similar issues are the number one reason that dogs are surrendered to shelters, so properly house training a dog can literally save his or her life.

House training a puppy does not need to be difficult, but it is important to take the process seriously, plan ahead and take things slowly. Some dogs will be easier to house break than others, so it important to work with the dog. Rushing the process can be counterproductive and cause to have to start all over again.

When it comes to house training a new puppy, it is important to know what to expect. Unless the owner is able to supervise the puppy round the clock, it is difficult to complete the house training process until the dog is at least six months old. It is important to know this ahead of time so the master can be prepared.

Young puppies have bodies that are constantly changing and growing, and puppies younger than six months often have not developed the bowel and bladder control they will need to be properly house trained.

When the owner is not at home, the puppy should be confined to a small room and the entire floor should be covered with paper. Of course it is important to puppy-proof the room, that is removing any items on which the puppy could be injured. In the beginning, the puppy will most likely eliminate anywhere within the room. In addition, the puppy will probably play with the papers, chew them, etc.

This is perfectly normal and should not be grounds for punishment or distress. Cleaning up each day should simply be part of the routine of living with a new puppy. Simply clean up the soiled papers and put down new ones each day.

Time for paper training

During the time that the puppy is confined in its little den, it will begin to develop the habit of eliminating on paper. After a little time has passed, the puppy will begin to exhibit a preferred place to eliminate. After this preferred spot has been established, the area that is papered should be slowly diminished.

The first papers to be removed should be those that are furthest away from the “toilet”. Eventually, the owner will have to lay down only a few papers. If the puppy ever misses those papers, it means that the papered area has been reduced too much and too soon.

Sadly Tony Blairs New Labour seems to have lost their way. In the recent elections in the USA political forums saw massive hits to their forums. Both mainstream political party's have large increases of membership due to their own forums. As in the numbers watching popular TV rise so will the memberships of our Political Party's. Not least the " Veritas Party" and the message it is spreading throughout the United Kingdom. Robert Kilroy Silks, walkabouts are attracting massive attention & support, from supporters and voters. In a recent walkabout in Port Talbot, South Wales RKS was mobbed by Supporters. More Walkabouts are planned with the people eager to shake Robert Kilroy Silk hand. He is a great breat of fresh air in todays politics. Many will say that the BBC loss is indeed Veritas is gain. We are seeing a major change in the battle fields of the election.

Even the media takes note of web sites trawling, web pages and sites looking for a newsworthy story. These days a blooger as these new Internet Gurus are called can even make storys. Information is traded at the click of a mouse.

New Brain Fitness Survey Reinforces Importance of Brain Awareness Week

New Brain Fitness Survey Reinforces Importance of Brain Awareness Week

Alvaro Fernandez Previews Upcoming SharpBrains Market Report at IHRSA 2009 Convention.

San Francisco (PRWEB) March 17, 2009

Alvaro Fernandez, CEO of SharpBrains and member of the World Economic Forum's Council on the Future of the Aging Society, previews today at the IHRSA (International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association) Annual Convention the results of a recent survey that reinforces the need for brain-related public awareness campaigns such as the ongoing Brain Awareness Week. "Every year, landmark research findings open new opportunities to help maintain lifelong cognitive health (http://www. sharpbrains. com/) and brain fitness" Alvaro Fernandez says, "The opportunity is immense - but we will need to ensure the marketplace matures in a rational and sustainable manner, helping consumers and professionals separate hope from hype and make informed decisions".

Robin Klaus, Chairman of Club One Fitness Centers, adds that "as our population ages the fields of physical fitness and brain fitness will naturally merge and, as this happens, a whole new field of valued added services will emerge for our members. High quality informational resources such as SharpBrains' are crucial to the success of this merger."

The Survey

In January 2009, market research firm SharpBrains surveyed 21,000 decision-makers and early adopters in the brain fitness (http://www. sharpbrains. com/blog/) field to identify attitudes and behaviors. The responses from over 2,000 participants reinforce the need for public awareness initiatives and quality information to help evaluate and navigate product claims.

Asked, "What is the most important problem you see in the brain fitness field and how do you think it can be solved?" respondents identified the following six problems in rank order:
#1: Public Awareness (39%)
"Getting people to understand that heredity alone does not decide brain functioning."  "An expectant public will first want to believe that a "miracle" drug is to be soon available (to prevent Alzheimer's Disease)."

#2: Navigating Claims (21%)
"How to separate marketing hype from stuff that really works?"  "The lack of standards and clear definitions is very confusing, and makes a lot of people sceptical."

#3: Research (15%)
"Determining what activities are most beneficial to the user with the minimum level of effort or most overlap of the already existing efforts."

#4: Healthcare Culture (14%)
"Integration within existing healthcare infrastructures - this will require research, education, and culture change. If brain fitness remains a niche alternative approach for the well-healed, we will have failed."

#5: Lack of Assessment (6%)
"Lack of development of standardized and easily accessible assessments of cognitive status that could be used by individuals and organizations to test the efficacy of cognitive improvement methods."

#6: Other problems (5%)
"Lack of information and products available to people - perhaps a drive to get the products and information in public libraries would help."

Note: The full results and analysis of the complete survey will be included in the upcoming SharpBrains market report, The State of the Brain Fitness Software (http://www. sharpbrains. com/) Market 2009.

What can be done to solve these problems?

#1 Public Awareness: Participate in Brain Awareness Week activities!

#2 Navigating claims: SharpBrains is publishing 2 new resources to help executives, professionals and consumers understand the emerging field and navigate the multiplicity of claims:

1) Market Report - The State of the Brains Fitness Software Market 2009 (April 2009): A comprehensive report reviewing the state of the research and market, including 2008 market data, an analysis of the landscape and trends in 4 major market segments, 10 research executive briefs written by leading scientists, deep profiles of over 20 companies, and the results of the full market survey introduced above.
2) Consumers Guide - The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness: 18 Interviews with Scientists, Practical Advice, and Product Reviews to Keep Your Brain Sharp (May 2009): In seven well-researched and fully annotated chapters, the guide provides a concise overview of the four pillars of lifelong brain maintenance (http://www. sharpbrains. com/) and an invaluable perspective on the growing field of Brain Fitness. The guide evaluates the most current evidence behind a number of products making brain fitness claims so that readers can make informed decisions and better understand emerging trends.

The market report will explore all identified problems in more depth (including research, health culture, lack of assessment, other), and suggest actions to solve them and help the field mature in a more rational and structured manner.

Everyone: Have a great Brain Awareness Week!

Comprehensive Wound Center Opens at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY

Comprehensive Wound Center Opens at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY

The new Comprehensive Wound Center at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N. Y. recently opened to offer a wide range of therapies for chronic non-healing wounds and ulcers. This Center is part of the newly-designated Vascular Center at Good Samaritan, which will offer comprehensive multi-disciplinary vascular care, surgery and support services. The Comprehensive Wound Center brings a much needed service to the residents of the Lower Hudson Valley

(PRWEB) January 16, 2005

"The Comprehensive Wound Center brings a much needed service to the residents of the Lower Hudson Valley," said Michael Schnieders, Executive Vice President and Administrator of Good Samaritan Hospital. “With our patient-friendly staff, state-of-the-art equipment, and expertise in the latest wound treatments, the Center will help hundreds of area residents, many of whom have given up hope that their wound will ever heal."

The Comprehensive Wound Center at Good Samaritan Hospital is an interdisciplinary outpatient clinic that brings together specialists in vascular surgery, general surgery, podiatry, plastic surgery, diabetes and infectious diseases. Patients initially undergo a complete assessment to identify the underlying cause of the wound and a treatment plan is devised.

Nearly six million Americans suffer from chronic, non-healing wounds that are usually the result of an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes, neuropathy, arthritis, venous insufficiency, peripheral arterial disease, autoimmune disease, or factors associated with immobility. Left untreated, these wounds or sores can lead to serious infection, gangrene and even amputation. More than 56,000 amputations are performed in the United States every year as a result of wounds and sores that won't heal.

For these patients, cuts, scratches, and sores do not heal with ordinary cleaning, an antiseptic cream, and a bandage. The natural healing process becomes a complex medical problem requiring specialized care, and patients often go for years before finding the help they need.

Chronic non-healing wounds and sores often result in expensive, fragmented care and decreased quality of life, explained Dr. Jay Levine Medical Director of the Comprehensive Wound Center at Good Samaritan Hospital. "Nationally, the average chronic wound patient has probably already incurred upwards of $20,000 of medical bills and has undergone 10 months of treatment with little or no improvement before going to a wound care center. Our goal is to help those who suffer from a chronic, non-healing wound before they reach that state."

Adds Dr. Levine, “Our entire multidisciplinary team of physicians and nurses has specialized training in wound care. Patients at the center are evaluated to determine if they have an underlying condition that might be inhibiting the natural healing process, such as diabetes or vascular disease. After the assessment, an individualized treatment program is planned. Patients are taught how to care for their wounds at home and learn about nutrition and exercises that might aid the healing process and prevent future wounds or ulcers"

In addition, Good Samaritan Home Care is privileged to have a certified Wound Care Nurse, who consults with wound and ostomy patients throughout Rockland and Orange Counties. This means that patients can be treated and observed by a specialist in the comfort of their own home as well as at the Comprehensive Wound Center.

For more information about the Comprehensive Wound Center at Good Samaritan Hospital, or to schedule an appointment or evaluation, call (845) 368-5000.

Good Samaritan Hospital is part of the Bon Secours Charity Health System, which also includes St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, NY and Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. Additionally, Bon Secours Charity Health System provides the services of a Certified Home Health Agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted living and adult home facility and several other medical programs. New Book by Psychologist Encourages Personal Connection with Stories of the Bible

New Book by Psychologist Encourages Personal Connection with Stories of the Bible

“The Women who Danced by the Sea” inspires progressive Biblical interpretations for modern day issues.

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) December 1, 2004

About ten years ago, Marsha Mirkin, Ph. D., a clinical psychologist and resident scholar at the Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center, began to teach workshops for adults on finding personal meaning in the stories of our Biblical foremothers. Mirkin’s workshops draw hundreds from across religious, political and age boundaries. She and her students have explored Biblical and psychological themes such as loss, healing, intimacy, betrayal, empathy, and parenting through reinterpreting Biblical stories using a psychological lens. This past October, her book, based on these workshops, “The Women who Danced by the Sea: Finding Ourselves in the Stories of our Biblical Foremothers,” was released by Monkfish Publishing Co.

Author and psychologist Harriet Lerner calls Mirkin a “passionate storyteller who enables us to see ourselves in each story she tells.” It is written in an engaging storytelling style and can be inspirational for people whether or not they have ever read the Bible before.

Mirkin finds that, to the initial surprise and interest of those who take her workshops, the Bible addresses many concerns that seem too modern for such an ancient text. Her interpretations allow us to see people struggle in relationships and learn from a compassionate God how to better deal with themselves, each other, and their society. Whether the characters she discusses are Hebrews or non-Hebrews, rich or poor, men or women, they are treated by the God of the Hebrew Bible with respect and compassion, and human beings are instructed to do the same. She regularly brings to the fore stories of non-Hebrew who display admirable characteristics and who are supported by the Hebrew God. There is no “othering” here.

This type of Biblical self-study is available in venues that would have seemed impossible a mere five or ten years ago. Harvard Medical School and the Cambridge Health alliance invited Mirkin to be a keynote speaker at a conference that they are sponsoring for physicians, Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology is giving continuing education credits to mental health professionals and educators who study this material with Mirkin. A multi-cultural conference in New Jersey requested that Mirkin present her psychological perspectives of the Bible. A branch of Jewish Family Services had Mirkin teaching about Biblical women to the elderly, while the college student organization Hillel requested that she teach similar stories and its lessons for our lives today to college students.

Mirkin is currently on tour with her book, a text that Rabbi Harold Kushner has called “a wise and wonderful book, a book to open minds and nourish souls.” The tour locations and audience reflect the diversity of people interested in this material. The book may be purchased at Barnes and Nobles, Borders, and other fine bookstores as well as on the web at Amazon. com.
