Witness: Ethiopia - A Photographic Installation Honoring the People of Ethiopia

Witness: Ethiopia - A Photographic Installation Honoring the People of Ethiopia

This is a photographic installation at Ceres Gallery in New York City that is based on a journey the artist and her sister made to Ethiopia thirty years after the death of their brother. This powerful exhibition incorporates both photographs and text.

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 16, 2005

New York City therapist/artist, Judith Greenwald, and her sister journeyed to Ethiopia earlier this year to pay tribute to their brother who died tragically on the Blue Nile River thirty years ago. Their travels are vividly chronicled by Ms. Greenwald in a photographic installation titled “Witness” at the Ceres Gallery in Chelsea, 547 W 27th Street, from October 4-29, 2005.

The exhibit reflects the sisters’ transformative journey as they experienced the spirit and beauty that captured their brother’s love for this complex and fascinating country. Seventy photographs with accompanying text showcase the people encountered along the roads and rivers that their brother traveled between 1973-1975 as cofounder of the renowned adventure company, Sobek Expeditions (now Mountain Travel Sobek).

These photographs capture the “eyes and souls” of a people rich in pride, spirit and faith. They are, as well, a people who face serious economic challenges. Consequently, proceeds from the sales of the photographs will be donated to support the critical work of four organizations that promote education, health care, HIV/AIDS services, and nutrition in Ethiopia. For more information call 718-788-3778.

FACT:

--More than 28 million Ethiopians live on an average annual income of less than $200 per year.

--Nearly three million Ethiopians live with HIV/AIDS, many of them children.

--Approximately 6 million Ethiopians are fed by international aid each year.

--Less than ½ the Ethiopian population have access to modern medicine.

"Great American Smokeout" Will Go Down in Flames, Says Hypnotist

"Great American Smokeout" Will Go Down in Flames, Says Hypnotist

Board Certified Hypnotist and Stop Smoking Specialist Sean Wheeler says that this week, thousands of smokers were duped into taking harmful drugs that don't work, all in an effort to quit the habit in honor of the 33rd Annual Great American Smokeout.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 21, 2008

This week, thousands of Americans began taking harmful and unnecessary drugs in an effort to stop smoking, and most of them will soon be smoking again. Thursday, November 20th marked the 33rd Annual Great American Smokeout, a day intended to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking.

"Everyone knows that smoking is dangerous, but it's frightening that most smokers aren't aware of the dangers of drugs like Chantix," says Sean Wheeler, a Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and stop smoking specialist in Atlanta, GA. "People need to know that some of the methods intended to help them quit are even more dangerous than smoking itself."

This year, Americans who've been hesitant to try hypnosis in the past should find it even more appealing as a solution, especially in light of these facts:
According to a recent study by Forbes. com, the average smoker could save $1000/year by quitting. A 2004 Duke University report calculated the true cost of smoking to be $40/pack. According to the London Daily Mail (http://www. dailymail. co. uk/news/article-1084156/Anti-smoking-drug-linked-10-British-suicides. html (http://www. dailymail. co. uk/news/article-1084156/Anti-smoking-drug-linked-10-British-suicides. html)) and USA Today (http://www. usatoday. com/news/health/2008-02-01-220606507_x. htm (http://www. usatoday. com/news/health/2008-02-01-220606507_x. htm)), Chantix has been linked to suicide and depression. In this 1992 study (http://www. purehypnosis. com/documents/SmokingCessationandHypnosis. pdf (http://www. purehypnosis. com/documents/SmokingCessationandHypnosis. pdf)), hypnosis was scientifically proven to be an effective method to stop smoking. Samuel Jackson, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Ellen Degeneres, Charlize Theron and Drew Barrymore have all used hypnosis to quit. Many hypnotists offer a lifetime guarantee for smoking cessation.

In this economy, the thought of saving an extra $1000/year is very appealing to Americans struggling just to pay their mortgages and fill their gas tanks.

However, the real price of smoking is even more alarming.

In their book "The Price of Smoking," Duke University health economists calculated the price of $40 per pack "by analyzing all the costs of smoking -- personally, to the smoker's family and to society at large."

Although popular, many smoking cessation aids have dangerous or undesirable side-effects. According to the makers of the nicotine patch, side-effects may include "rashes, irregular heartbeat or palpitations, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weakness and rapid heartbeat."

Chantix (known as Champix in the UK) is far more risky, and according to AboutLawsuits. com (http://www. aboutlawsuits. com/chantix-160/ (http://www. aboutlawsuits. com/chantix-160/)), it is now involved in a number of lawsuits, some related to suicide. Furthermore, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices reports that Chantix is linked to at least 50 deaths in the US during the first quarter of 2008.

"When you really look at the alternatives," says Wheeler, "hypnosis is by far the fastest, safest and most affordable solution available."

Now that popular celebrities like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey have publicly endorsed hypnosis, many more people are jumping on board.

"It's funny," Wheeler explains, "people used to be very hesitant to try hypnosis because of what they've seen in movies, but now that the guys from Good Will Hunting have been hypnotized to quit, suddenly they're far more open to it."

While thousands of people have attempted to quit smoking in tandem with the Smokeout, the American Cancer Society's website says most people trying to quit will return to the habit within three months, if not sooner. That's why it's important to choose a method that's structured to help smokers quit for good, even after a relapse.

"Most of my clients stop smoking after a session or two of hypnosis," Wheeler says, "and they're always welcome to come back without paying another penny. It's rarely needed, but they say it's comforting to know it's available."

If smokers do their research and look at the facts, they're more likely to find the help they need.

"I'm not suggesting that hypnosis is the only way to quit," explains Wheeler, "only that people can be successful without putting dangerous chemicals into their bodies. Here's hoping that this year, more choose a method that will allow them to celebrate a full year as a non-smoker when the next Smokeout rolls around in November of 2009."

Sleeping Better at Night by Walking at the Office

Sleeping Better at Night by Walking at the Office

Many independent studies tout the positive effects of exercise on sleep patterns however less than 5% of U. S. adults participate in an exercise program on a consistent basis. The damage to health goes beyond just feeling tired at work.

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus) November 5, 2010

Insomnia, restlessness, and poor sleep habits wreak havoc on the health of U. S. employees and cost employers an additional $3,200 annually per employee, $20 billion in total according to researchers. Numerous studies have pointed to the effectiveness of daily exercise in mitigating these effects however less than 5% of U. S. adults participate in a daily exercise regimen. TrekDesk treadmill desks allow employees the opportunity to walk all day without ever leaving their desk.

The study reported this year to the Associated Professional Sleep Societies that the 4.19% of employees suffering from insomnia reflect only the reported cases currently seeking treatment, so the cost to employers is actually much higher.

“We have more than 58 obesity related diseases caused in large part to inactivity and cramming employees into cubicles 8-10 hours a day. Employers need to recognize that movement is critical not only to the health of their workers but also to their productivity and bottom line,” related Steve Bordley, CEO of TrekDesk. com.

TrekDesk is a full sized, height adjustable work station which attached to an existing treadmill allows individuals to walk slowly while they work and restore their health. Designed to re-introduce movement into the workplace and schools TrekDesk offers the ability to achieve 10,000 steps in as little as 3-4 hours a day.

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center found in a 2003 study that participants who exercised only 30 minutes every morning had less trouble falling asleep than those who were less active.

“Just 30 minutes of exercise offers tremendous benefits, but we have to think beyond stop gap measures. We have a health crisis in this country and until we address the issues contributing to sedentary lifestyles and our escalating levels of inactivity we will remain in peril,” concluded Bordley.

TrekDesk is currently available for sale online at TrekDesk. com for $479.00 including free shipping. Join the TrekDesk “Movement Revolution” to learn more about these studies on TrekDesk’s Facebook page at http://www. facebook. com/pages/TrekDesk-Treadmill-Desk/80743563805].

New safe driving program hits objectives

New safe driving program hits objectives

Teen driver car crashes continue as the leading cause of permanent injury and death in teens. A safe driving program launched last year aims to reduce the risk...

(PRWEB) January 18, 2003

New safe driving program hits objectives

“Perfect driving.”

That’s the first and only report on driver behavior received in the first year of operation of a new teen safe driving initiative available across North America. “It fits with our goal to prevent ‘em, not catch ‘em,” says Gary Direnfeld, founder and director of the I Promise Program.

The “I Promise Program” was launched in January 2002 to reduce the risk of teen driver car crashes. The program took 2 years of development that included the input of traffic safety experts worldwide and focus group research involving youth, parents and community members.

The first yearÂ’s objective was to introduce the initiative to stakeholders in traffic safety to see if support could gained to bring information about the initiative to the public in as fiscally responsible a manner as possible.

Goal met. A Canadian company, The Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company came on board and offers a discount to teens in Ontario, Canada. Meanwhile in the US, Healthy Lancaster, a health organization in Lancaster, SC, offers the program at no cost for residents there. The website, www. ipromiseprogram. com, complete with special reports, letters of support and news article on the initiative receives more than 200 hits daily.

In addition, over 90 health organizations, law enforcement agencies, insurance agents and brokers from across North America have requested order forms for distribution within their respective community at the local level. Research is now underway in Canada and a research proposal to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta will soon be discussed with the Injury Prevention Research Center at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

Registrations for the program have been received from 8 US states and 3 Canadian provinces.

To appreciate the risk of a teenager’s involvement in a car crash consider this, says Direnfeld, “Load the chamber of a 6-shot revolver with 1 bullet. Stand across the room and point it at your teenaged son or daughter. Now imagine the chamber only holds 4 shots and one chamber remains loaded and you point it again. That gives you a 25 percent chance of firing the bullet in the direction of your child. If the bullet hits the wall, this is property damage but if you hit your child they will be injured, maimed or killed. Care to pull the trigger?”

This is in effect what parents do when handing their new teen drivers the keys to the family car. Twenty-five percent of teen drivers will have a car crash within their first year of driving. While driving is considered a rite of passage in todayÂ’s society, property damage, injury, life-long disability and death are not usually figured into this rite by most parents. Sadly though, across North America over 6,000 teens continue to die each year and over 400,000 teens are injured each year in teen driver car crashes making this the greatest risk to the well-being of youth. In fact it takes the next four leading causes of death in teens (suicide, homicide, heart disease and cancer) combined just to equal teen driver car crashes.

The I Promise Program requires parents and teens to sign a mutual safe driving contract and then affix a rear window decal that displays a toll-free number inviting calls on driver behavior. Any call received only results in a letter sent to the parents so they can address the information privately within their family.

Calls are not pouring in though. Direnfeld believes it is because responsible driving goes unnoticed. Similar programs in the trucking industry show a 22% reduction in crashes and parents who use safe driving contracts are shown to place more restrictions and greater expectations on their teen drivers.

Direnfeld and a long list of other organizations are encouraging parents to participate in the I Promise Program now. He admits that teens may whine about the program but adds, “Parents will be happier for a whining teen if it leads to a reduced risk of a car crash. Personally, I despair when I continue to read of these events involving wonderful teens so regularly in newspapers.”

He adds, “Place restrictions and expectations on their driving and have them earn driving privileges. Although they won’t say so now, they’ll likely get their kids to participate when they become parents of teenagers too.”

U. S. Navy Retiree, Internet Entrepreneur & Author Of The 12 Volume "HARD TARGET" Ebook Series, Donates Profits To Canadian Stalker/Assault Victim...Asks For YOUR Help!

William B. Doyle, U. S. Navy retiree, internet entrepreneur & author of the 12 volume "HARD TARGET" ebook series, volunteered to donate 50% of ALL profits received from his two websites to hospitalized Canadian Laurie Rogers and her 4 year old son, who observed his birthday with his mom, in the hospital. Mr. Doyle, who indirectly formed an online anti-terrorism coalition with successful webmasters Dan Cauthron, Shawn Casey, Bobbette Madonna, Edward Thorpe and more due to their support of his "HARD TARGET" ebooks, says "This isn't another case of internet panhandling where sites have popped-up asking for help from debt or plain greed. Laurie was visciously attacked (again) by someone she knows very well and suffered very serious injuries. Her stalker and attacker remains free and poses an imminent danger."

(PRWEB) January 10, 2003

Inchon, Korea -- 10 January 2003 -- William B. Doyle, U. S. Navy retiree, internet entrepreneur & author of the 12 volume "HARD TARGET" ebook series, volunteered to donate 50% of ALL profits received from his two websites to hospitalized Canadian Laurie Rogers and 4 year old son who observed his birthday with his mom in the hospital.

Laurie was harassed, stalked and finally attacked on 28 December 2002 in Ontario, Canada, where she lives with her son. She suffered a broken nose, concussion and broken jaw, for starters. Laurie has undergone the first round of surgical operations to begin repairing the damage.

Because of certain legal issues as well as Laurie and her son's security, not much in the way of details may be released at this time. This situation is unfortunately very true and quite serious.

For security reasons, at the advice of her lawyer, Laurie's contact information can't be made public right now. They have her under very tight security for fear of reprisals. Her family and friends are that scared of what might happen!

Who Is Laurie Rogers?

Laurie Rogers is the Co-Author of the Ezine Resource Guide which she co-wrote with Internet Marketing "Guru" Jimmy D. Brown.

Laurie is the owner of Frenzy Media and several other web sites. She will soon be launching a paid ezine based on her passion for "Resources". She has been dubbed as the "Queen of Resources" by many of her colleagues and a "Resource Pack Rat" by Jimmy D. Brown.

Laurie is also working towards her certification as a Web Specialist - Web Design, eCommerce, Programming and Development in which she holds an impressive 96.4 G. P.A.

Laurie is a VERY proud Charter Member of iCop, The International Council of Professionals - "We Police Ourselves to Protect the Consumer"!

She is also a "Featured Writer" (Spam and Filter Expert) for DEMC Small Business Ezine, where she writes a column dedicated to Spam. Her keen interest in "Spam" developed due to the ever increasing "Anti-Spam Movement" and because of the irrational effects that it is having on her own businesses and those of her colleagues. Laurie has since syndicated her spam column due to public demand - it is currently featured in several ezines with a weekly readership of well over 500,000 subscribers.

Laurie has been successfully marketing online for over 4 years and feels very passionate about the rights of Small Business owners.

Those who have used Laurie's services received an email from her company, "OptinFrenzy", stating that Laurie's business is on hold. This means she has very little income right now. Family members are taking care of her son. It will be a long time before Laurie is healthy enough to resume working.

Laurie's "Optin Frenzy" provides site visitors with a vast array of FREE Optin Ezine and Newsletter subscriptions. They also provide publishers with a unique method of building their lists at an extremely affordable rate.

Laurie is facing some serious legal and medical bills, which is why William B. Doyle is donating 50% of ALL profits from his http://www. wbdoyle. com (http://www. wbdoyle. com) and http://www. hard-target. net (http://www. hard-target. net) websites. He is asking you to help simply by making a purchase at either site.

Http://www. wbdoyle. com (http://www. wbdoyle. com) offers a vast array of internet marketing information, software, ebooks, tools and free stuff!

You can also subscribe to the free email "BONUS KITS" newsletter by sending a blank email to: mailto:bonuskits@wbdoyle. com.

Http://www. hard-target. net (http://www. hard-target. net) contains the "HARD TARGET" ebooks, a virtual treasure trove of helpful, easy-to-understand information, empowers you and creates a safe harbor for you, your family and friends to make everyone into "hard targets" for terrorists and criminals alike.

Dan Cauthron tells us that "Bill knows what evil looks like, and he knows exactly how to keep it at bay. If you have even a minor concern about the safety and security of your family and yourself, let me suggest you visit William B. Doyle at http://www. hard-target. net." (http://www. hard-target. net.")

Ed Thorpe thanked Mr. Doyle "...for your hard-hitting personal safety "Hard Target" eBook series. Because of my background, I recognize your eBooks are legit and are a 'must have' in today's somewhat unstable world. Thank you for truly smart methods and real world solutions to personal safety in an increasingly un-stable

World."

Bobbette Madonna was equally impressed, saying "When I seriously read Mr. Doyle's work, I was immensely impressed. Having seen the face of evil he knows whereof he speaks. Today, I have in my possession the entire 12 volume "HARD TARGET" anti-terrorism/crime prevention ebook series offered by Mr. Doyle and it is spectacular.

I have read the series and highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who are interested in understanding the most basic of instincts - survival."

"Make the OTHER GUY the target!" says Mr. William B. Doyle who served over 20 years in the U. S. Navy and trained over 1,000 military personnel, family members & DOD civilians as an Anti-Terrorism Training Officer. He also has experience as a Naval Law Enforcement, Physical Security and Force Protection Officer. Mr. Doyle is currently serving as the Area II Civilian Misconduct Officer at Yongsan Garrison, Seoul, Korea.

You can also subscribe to the free email "HARD TARGET" newsletter by sending a blank email to: mailto:hardtarget@wbdoyle. com.

Canadian socialized medicine pays only the basic medical bills. The intensive care, plastic surgery, extensive rehabilitation and other related costs may not be paid. Laurie also needs your help with all the other living expenses and legal costs.

Laurie's son doesn't know why his mommy can't be with him and is wondering where she is and what's wrong.

If anyone would like to send Laurie either an e-card or a print card (address below), send it to Bobbette Madonna who'll see that Laurie gets it.

Please send cards to:

Laurie Rogers, c/o Bobbette Madonna, 8068 Birch Bay Drive, Blaine WA 98230

Laurie's family has asked that when you send gifts and cards, to please include your snail mail address so they can send you a proper "Thank You" card. Send info to Laurie's address - mailto:laurie@optinfrenzy. com

ROCKDALE HOSPITAL OFFERS LATEST IN DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING FOR DETECTION OF DISEASES

ROCKDALE HOSPITAL OFFERS LATEST IN DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING FOR DETECTION OF DISEASES

Rockdale Hospital now offers PET scan services. PET scans are the latest in diagnostic imaging for early detection of diseases like cancer and can often prevent unecessary treatments or procedures.

(PRWEB) July 3, 2002

Conyers, Ga.—Rockdale Hospital‘s Outpatient Diagnostic Center will enhance its imaging capabilities with the addition of a new positron emission technology (PET) system.

A PET scan is the latest in imaging tools used for early and highly accurate detection of cancer and other diseases. PET studies body function at a cellular level, rather than showing radiological images of anatomy or body structure.

Patients are injected with a form of glucose that is distributed throughout the body. The PET scanner tracks and records signals that the glucose emits while a computer reconstructs the signals into whole body images that show where disease is present in the body. Cells in the body rely on glucose as an energy source. When cells require more fuel, such as growing cancer cells, they will metabolize glucose more quickly than other cells. Areas that metabolize the glucose more will then show up on the PET scan images.

For oncology patients, a PET scan determines the exact location and state of cancerous tissue and can sometimes prevent unnecessary surgery, biopsies or treatments.

PET scans can also be used to screen for heart disease and evaluate damage to heart muscle after a heart attack and to show early signs of neurological diseases.

The system provides physicians with information about the bodyÂ’s chemistry, cell function and the exact location of diseases not available with CT scans, MRIs or X-rays. A physicianÂ’s order is required for a scan. PET scans will be available in the Outpatient Diagnostic Center Saturdays from 8 am-4:30 pm beginning July 13.

Rockdale Hospital, the preferred healthcare facility for east-metro Atlanta area, is committed to providing quality, accessible and convenient medical services to the community. The facility offers an array of medical services and a medical staff with more than 300 physicians, representing 35 specialties.

EditorÂ’s and reporterÂ’s note: Interviews with a physician expert or patient are available upon request.

Bay Area Group Cooks Up New Vegetarian Support Program

Bay Area Group Cooks Up New Vegetarian Support Program

Bay Area Vegetarians (BAV) has introduced a new Mentor Program aimed at helping people transition from meat eating to a plant-based diet. The program is tailored for those who would like to adopt a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle but donÂ’t know exactly how to go about doing so.

(PRWEB) October 8, 2004

Bay Area Vegetarians (BAV) has introduced a new Mentor Program aimed at helping people transition from meat eating to a plant-based diet. The program is tailored for those who would like to adopt a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle but donÂ’t know exactly how to go about doing so. BAV connects these individuals with a network of other aspiring vegetarians/vegans for support, as well as a core group of experienced vegans who act as mentors, offering advice and encouragement. The mentors chosen for the program draw on their own experience to recognize that most people make the change to a plant-based diet gradually, and empower program enrollees to determine their own pace as they travel along the path toward veganism.

While its structure is similar to the model used by other support groups (and even incorporates a “12 step” approach), BAV’s Mentor Program is unique in addressing the broad range of issues involved in transitioning to a plant-based diet – from nutrition, cooking, and eating out to animal rights and advocacy. The program offers participants an opportunity to learn about vegetarianism and veganism by posting questions to an online forum and reading responses from mentors and peers. In the program’s second stage, mentors will share knowledge with program participants by hosting vegan restaurant outings, shopping trips to neighborhood grocery stores, and educational workshops.

Over the last twenty-five years, medical research has firmly established the health benefits of a plant-based diet while demonstrating the dangers of eating meat, dairy and eggs because of their high fat and cholesterol content. The public’s growing awareness of this knowledge has dovetailed with an American obesity epidemic, the spread of dangerous meat-borne illnesses around the world, and increasing concern about factory farming’s impact on animals and the environment. Surveys show that many people would like to stop eating animal products for health, ethical, or environmental reasons, but don’t become vegetarian because they think that it would be too inconvenient. BAV’s Mentor Program is designed with these issues in mind: it highlights the healthiness of a plant-based diet while demonstrating that you don’t have to sacrifice convenience or taste when you go vegetarian or vegan. The program’s mentors – including BAV founders Chris James and Tammy Wong – themselves exemplify the practicality and health benefits of a vegan lifestyle.

Anyone who wishes to become vegetarian or vegan can sign up for the program for free at www. bayareaveg. org/mentor. htm (http://www. bayareaveg. org/mentor. htm )

Inspiring New Novel "Sunrise Sunset" Traces Circle of Life from Infertility to Alzheimers

Inspiring New Novel "Sunrise Sunset" Traces Circle of Life from Infertility to Alzheimers

Sunrise Sunset by Kathleen Marie Marsh and Heather Sprangers. "If you live long enough, you end up where you started. "Alzheimer’s Disease, infertility, office politics, complex family relationships and a first pregnancy come into play in this fast-paced new novel about intimacy, friendship and letting go. This beautiful story of a cross-generational friendship ”sings” as we observe two women helping one another cope with life’s challenges. Set in small-town Wisconsin, Sunrise, Sunset brings to light the myriad thoughts and emotions of two women moving through a captivating series of life’s ups and downs. The younger woman struggles with infertility until finally becoming pregnant, only to be harangued by her obsessively thin mother-in-law, accused of an office affair, and plagued by debilitating headaches she mistakenly thinks are common for pregnant women. She reconnects with a former English teacher who is dealing with her own issues: her mother’s growing dementia, a brother gambling away his mother’s funds, and a student’s parent who launches a campaign to have her fired.

(PRWEB) November 13, 2004

As a young teen, Heather Sprangers sat in Kathleen MarshÂ’s seventh grade classroom listening to her favorite teacher talk about her love for books and her dream that someday she would write her own best-seller. Little did Heather know that she would help Mrs. Marsh realize her goal by becoming her co-author in publishing Sunrise, Sunset, their mainstream novel that traces the circle of life from infertility to AlzheimerÂ’s.

Sunrise, Sunset is set in small-town Wisconsin. The novel brings to light the myriad thoughts and emotions of two women moving through a captivating series of lifeÂ’s ups and downs. The younger woman struggles with infertility until finally becoming pregnant, only to be harangued by her obsessively thin mother-in-law, accused of an office affair, and plagued by debilitating headaches she mistakenly thinks are common for pregnant women. She reconnects with a former teacher who is dealing with her own issues: her motherÂ’s growing dementia, a brother gambling away his motherÂ’s money, and a studentÂ’s parent who launches a campaign to have her fired. Their cross-generational friendship flourishes as the two women help one another cope with the many challenges they face as they traverse the circle of life.

“Once we decided to do the project, of course we set out to tell a dynamite story,” says Marsh. “But we also wanted to show how women rely on each other when confronted by seemingly insurmountable problems. The book turned out to exceed all my expectations. Not only is this a wonderful, fast-paced read, but it was truly a labor of love.” Heather agrees and adds with a smile, “And then we managed to infuse the book with ‘truth nuggets’--the value of our cherished friendship and the wisdom of our own experience. We know our readers are going to love it!”

The result of their unique collaboration was amazing: a seamless story told from two distinct points of view: Janelle (a twenty-eight-year-old graphic designer); and Ellie (a fifty-five-year-old English teacher). In addition to the dual points of view, there are a few other things that make this project unique. Nationally-known artist Betsy Popp of Townsend did the cover art, George Banta Corporation of Neenah printed the book, and MarshÂ’s Townsend firm, Otter Run Books LLC, published the novel.

“All the companies involved in Sunrise, Sunset’s publication are headed by female CEO’s,” says Marsh. “This was not accidental, and is fitting considering this is really a ‘chick’ book. Another item of local interest is that, from ideas to ink, this is an all-Wisconsin product.”

This is HeatherÂ’s first novel. Kathie is also the author of the widely-acclaimed The Portly Princess of Thynneland, a delightful fairy tale for grown-ups which addresses the role parents play in developing healthy eating habits in their children.

Sunrise, Sunset is available by sending a check for $8.95 plus $3.00 tax/shipping to: Otter Run Books LLC; 16965 Nicolet Road; Townsend, WI 54175. The Portly Princess is available for $13.95 plus $3.00 tax/postage. Buy multiple copies/both books and shipping is free! You may also order by calling 715-276-6515 or visiting www. otterrunbooks. com.

Heather Sprangers-Bio

Heather Sprangers was born and raised in Kaukauna, WI. She discovered her passion for writing in Kathleen Marsh’s seventh grade classroom where the first ten minutes were set aside for journaling. Heather learned to express her thoughts and feelings freely because she knew these private thoughts weren’t being graded…they wouldn’t even be read unless she requested feedback. Heather cherished this writing as therapy during a time in her life when she was very much in need of it. She earned straight “A’s” in Kathleen’s class and volunteered the next year to be her student aide, thus beginning their life-long friendship. That year she also won a writing contest in her social studies class; the prize: a coveted ride in the local news channel helicopter.

Throughout high school, classmates shook their heads in disbelief as Heather actually welcomed composition assignments in her classes. But her love of writing paid off. She won a partial college scholarship with a piece she wrote entitled “The Gates of Heaven,” which depicted the last moments of her beloved stepfather’s life that ended after his eight-week battle with cancer.

To earn money for college, Heather spent her nineteenth summer working rotating shifts in a paper mill. Finding that tending a paper machine was monotonous, mind-numbing labor for her, Heather was determined not to let her brain turn to mush. She used her dead time to create characters and develop plot ideas for Transplant, her first novel, which she completed that summer. Transplant was never published, but it did provide her with valuable experience writing fiction and stoked her friendship with Kathleen who provided suggestions, support and encouragement.

In college, Heather pursued an accounting degree but wrote several articles for the school newspaper and took more creative writing classes before deciding to leave the university and pursue her creative interests in an Interior Design degree. Graduating in 1994, she also obtained her Wisconsin Real Estate license and went to work as a Real Estate agent while doing interior design work on the side. She married her high school sweetheart in 1997 and two years later they decided they were ready to start a family. To their surprise and disappointment, they learned that “family planning” wasn’t so simple. With the help of IUI, Heather eventually got pregnant in November of 2001. She and her husband, Adam, are now the proud parents of Benjamin Owen Sprangers.

Heather is currently employed as a Project Manager Assistant at August Winter & Sons, Inc. in Appleton, Wisconsin. She has spent the last two years collaborating with Kathleen on her second novel, Sunrise, Sunset, a wonderful story of a cross-generational friendship that traces the circle of life by interweaving two contemporary hot-button issues: infertility and AlzheimerÂ’s Disease.

Kathleen MarshÂ’s Bio

Kathleen Marie Marsh grew up third of eight children on a dairy farm in Northeastern Wisconsin where she learned to love books, gardening, nature, cooking and life. She began reading and writing at age five and had her first publishing success in elementary school when she won a creative writing contest. She excelled in the communicative arts in high school, earning a full scholarship to Mount Mary College in Milwaukee where she honed her writing skills as editor of the college newspaper. During her sophomore year, Kathie had a short story published in the collegeÂ’s literary magazine, a heady experience that determined her career choice. Two years later she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in English Education and History.

Kathie’s academic work experience includes 35 years of teaching English in the Kaukauna Public Schools. During her career, she worked on dozens of school, church and community committees, somehow always managing to be appointed secretary. She was a union activist in her local, state and national teacher associations, and was publications editor for several periodicals as well as advisor to her school’s newspaper. She currently owns and operates Otter Run Books LLC, a publishing and consulting business. She is also founder of UNAC (Up North Author’s Circle), a “support” group for fledgling Northwoods writers coping with an overwhelming compulsion to write and then publish their work.

In 1990, Kathie earned her Master in Education Teacher Development Degree at Marian College in Fond du Lac. She has attended and presented at dozens of seminars in a wide variety of subject areas and has won numerous awards. She was named both Kaukauna and CESA Middle School Teacher of the Year in 1993 and that same year chosen as the outstanding female educator in Northeastern Wisconsin by the Green Bay Chapter of ZONTA. For the past 14 years she has taught composition, desktop publishing and classroom management classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels for Marian College, Concordia University, Viterbo University and the Graduate College of Wisconsin.

After teaching writing and grading her studentsÂ’ papers for almost four decades, Kathie is now semi-retired and finally has time to write. She recently completed a full-length mainstream novel, Sunrise, Sunset, which she co-authored with Heather Sprangers, a former student. Sunrise, Sunset is a wonderful story of a cross-generational friendship that traces the circle of life by interweaving two contemporary hot-button issues: infertility and AlzheimerÂ’s Disease.

Kathie has recently discovered the genre of adult fairy tales. Her first attempt is The Portly Princess of Thynneland, an enchantingly entertaining little book that addresses the critical role of parents in the issue of childhood obesity. Plagued by carrying the family “fat gene,” herself, Kathie knows the topic firsthand. She has struggled her entire adult life to control her weight, succeeding in her fight to keep herself slim through a combination of a low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet and a dedicated power walking program.

Amway Parent Grows to $8.4 Billion in 2009

Amway Parent Grows to $8.4 Billion in 2009

Strategic innovation, consumer focus fuel growth despite slow global economy; Alticor marks sales increase for ninth time in 10 years

Ada, MI (PRWEB) March 9, 2010

Amway’s parent company, Alticor Inc., announced record sales of more than US$8.4 billion for the year ended Dec. 31, 2009, which was a 2.3 percent increase over 2008. Sales were negatively impacted by foreign currency fluctuations, which in local currency grew 5.9 percent.

“Our focus on using innovation to transform the Amway business is showing results,” said chairman Steve Van Andel. “The global economy challenged every business in 2009. Our continuing investment in products, technology, and connecting with consumers helped us weather the storm.”

Said president Doug DeVos: “Our distributors around the world deserve a lot of credit for persistence in a difficult economic climate. We put a lot of effort into improving our product offerings and building consumer awareness; the distributors put in the work to drive sales to our customers.”

The company also made gains in another key measure. Said Van Andel: “In 2009, we increased our market share in the direct selling industry, and continued to drive improvements and adjustments to our business that will help us, and our distributors, succeed over the long term.”

Strong regional sales in China, India, Southeast Asia, and Korea continued in 2009, while the 2008 relaunch of the Latin American market yielded a second year of more than 50% percent increase in volume in the region. Visible work has been done to strengthen and reposition Amway in established markets such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, making the region one to watch for 2010.

In the North America market, continued transformation was marked by investments in visibility, training and consumer access. In November, the company launched an ordering “app” for Apple® iPhone, product information and sales support via podcast, and training apps on iTunes®. North America is also the first to implement a new web commerce platform, which will begin a global rollout later in 2010.

“More than ever before, Amway is a truly global company,” DeVos said. “As markets outside the United States continue to develop, we are learning constantly how to better support consumers in many different cultures. Then we take the best lessons we learn in each market and figure out how to apply them around the world.”

Amway does not generally release individual market sales or disclose profitability.

Amway, a pioneer and leader of the direct selling industry, does business through its distributor network in more than 80 countries and territories. Amway’s flagship product brands include NUTRILITE™ nutrition and wellness products. Nutrilite is the leading global brand of nutritional supplements and is also the worldwide leader in children’s nutritional supplements. ARTISTRY™, one of the top five global prestige brands of skin care and cosmetics, is a recognized leader in specialized development of Asian skin care regimens and emphasizes premium, anti-aging skin care.

Talent and innovation

The company is in its third year of a strategic plan intended to drive innovation, talent and growth. “Amway has hired 23 executive leaders in the past three years,” said Van Andel, “adding to a world-class senior management team that has grown with the Amway business. The new leaders bring outside perspectives and insights to us, and the veterans are giving them a strong, supportive base to build from.”

Amway’s parent company earlier this year announced a strategic partnership with Metagenics, developer of therapeutic nutritional supplements that are primarily sold through health care providers. Gurwitch Products, marketer of Laura Mercier cosmetics and ReVive skin care products, continued a strong, stable pattern of growth and expansion. Sales of third-party manufacturing and logistics services through subsidiary Access Business Group were lower in 2009, in part due to the challenges faced by those customers, and in part due to an increased need for manufacturing and logistics capacity based on growth of the Amway business.
 .
“In 2010, we will continue to change the way people see Amway,” said DeVos. “We are finding new ways to articulate our values and our opportunity so that we can connect to entrepreneurs and product consumers around the globe.”

New Short Film on Visual Impairment Supports VisionZone’s Low Vision and Eye Health Movement

New Short Film on Visual Impairment Supports VisionZone’s Low Vision and Eye Health Movement

Optelec teams up with ‘a bick/antzis thing’ and blind comedian to entertain, educate, and strengthen public knowledge about vision disability through VisionZone short film

San Diego (PRWEB) May 20, 2010

Optelec U. S. Inc (http://www. optelec. com/en_US/home)., a world leader in innovative and life changing assistive technologies for the blind and visually impaired, has teamed up with Film Directors, Producers and Writers Drew Antzis and Tamara Bick of ‘a bick/antzis thing’ who are most notable for their work with the acclaimed Funny Or Die Web site, to create a short film for Optelec’s new nationwide movement to promote ocular health awareness called VisionZone (http://www. visionzone. org).

The groundbreaking short film “VisionZone: You’re Not Alone Anymore (http://www. visionzone. org/content/visionzone-movie)” offers an atypical perspective on disability and vision loss through the use of truth and comedy. While entertaining and educational, it is designed to show mainstream audiences that low vision is not easily recognizable, and strengthens public knowledge about visual impairment and available resources.

Andre Hardy, president of Optelec U. S. Inc. and VisionZone, had an initial goal behind the VisionZone film, “Let’s create this title wave of people who are concerned with ocular health and want to see people live full lives even though they have a visual impairment.”

Today more than 16 million people in the U. S. report some form of visual impairment and that number is expected to double by 2030 as the aging population brings rising rates of age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases.

The film’s loveable star is Brian Fischler, 37 (http://www. youtube. com/visionzoneorg#p/u/0/z6tDJ71denQ), a nationally recognized, legally blind, stand-up comedian and Founder of the non-profit organization Laugh for Sight. Fischler began losing his vision from Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 17, and like many people with low vision, upon first glance it’s not noticeable that he is legally blind. The film was shot throughout San Diego, Calif., including footage from Acqua al 2, a popular Italian restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter.

“Hoping that it (VisionZone film) opens a lot more doors to people who are affected by visual problems and are not aware of all the support networks and the technological tools out there,” stated Fischler.

“VisionZone: You’re Not Alone Anymore” is directed by Drew Antzis, one of the most prolific filmmakers on Funny or Die. He has directed more than 70 comedy viral videos, including the infamous “The Landlord” with Will Ferrell; one of the most highly watched viral videos ever to hit the Web.

“When healthcare is talked about, ocular health isn’t in that conversation,” stated Antzis. “Working with Optelec was enlightening, and forced me to become aware of an issue that I personally didn’t know much about. This film captures a balance between humor and education.”

“Optelec took a risk by producing this film because we want the general public to start talking about vision loss and low vision; it is astounding how many people are uninformed about this critical health issue,” further stated Hardy. “If we (industry leaders) don’t make this issue more apparent, nobody will. We hope utilizing unconventional outreach tactics will help broaden the awareness as most people only know about visual impaired because they or their family member suffers from it.”

The film introduces VisionZone, recently launched to provide the low vision community’s first live and virtual eye-health resource designed to bridge the gap between eye disease, prevention, awareness and product solutions.

Top Russian Expert in Drug and Alcohol Rehab to Address National Convention Of Addiction Professionals Sept. 30, 2006

Top Russian Expert in Drug and Alcohol Rehab to Address National Convention Of Addiction Professionals Sept. 30, 2006

With drug and alcohol addiction in 100% of American families, either friends, family members or colleagues, Dr. Marshak offers sobriety for the sufferring.

Los Angeles, Calif. (PRWEB) September 22, 2006

On September 30, 2006 Dr. Yakov Marshak, M. D., founder and scientific director of Russia's renowned Marshak Clinic for the treatment of drug addiction, alcohol and substance abuse, will address the CAADAC/NAADAC/NALGAP Annual Conference at the Hilton Burbank Airport in Burbank, California.

Dr. Marshak’s unique method for treating addiction has a reported success rate of 70%, according to Clinic follow up studies which track heroin addicts for two years after they complete the one month program in Moscow.

Dr. Marshak was invited to speak after Mary Woods, President of NAADAC, led a group of ten addiction professionals to Russia and the Marshak Clinic in October 2005.

Ms. Woods and the others were impressed by Dr. Marshak’s method which is based on genetic marker monitoring, a specific diet, nutritional and dietary supplements, specific oriental yoga exercises, and intensive counseling combined with a Twelve Step Program. Dr. Marshak’s treatment program is focused on normalizing the biochemical imbalance of the brain that has developed in the patients due to their substance abuse. Dr. Marshak believes that the biochemical balance of the brain needs to be normalized before one can take full advantage of the recovery process. Once the imbalance has been fixed, the counseling and teaching begins with a focus on the patient's value systems and his/her reaction to trigger points that create the thirst for the illicit substance.

"I have no doubt that implemented here, Dr. Marshak’s treatment program would have significantly better results than most private or publicly funded programs in the U. S., “ said Robert A. Kajdan, who accompanied Ms. Woods to the Marshak Clinic last year. Kajdan is Manager, Residential Treatment Programs for the Contra Costa County (California) Health Services Department.

Dr. Marshak was a member of the first group of Soviet medical doctors brought to the United States by Alcoholics Anonymous to learn about the Twelve Step Program. The Program, which has been the basis for western treatment of alcoholism and substance abuse since 1935, was unknown to Russians at that time. Dr Marshak spent half of a year in Florida at the Heritage Health Treatment Center, and half a year at the Lakeside Treatment Center in Seattle, ultimately qualifying as a Certified Addiction Professional (CAP).

On his return to Russia, where addicts were still being sent to forced labor camps, he opened a private practice. In 1997 he opened Russia’s first rehabilitation clinic, which now treats 40 patients each month.

Note: If you would like to interview Dr. Marshak or attend his speech, please contact Dianne Bennett via e-mail.

Cultural Competency: Uniting Patients with Healthcare Organizations

Cultural Competency: Uniting Patients with Healthcare Organizations

Almost 15 percent of Americans speak a language other than English at home or have a limited English proficiency, which often results in a cultural divide between patients and their health plans or healthcare providers. Many healthcare organizations are finding new ways to integrate cultural competency training into their orientations, meetings and lunch hours, as they detailed in an April 2006 online survey sponsored by the Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN).

Manasquan, NJ, (PRWEB) June 1, 2006 –-

Almost 15 percent of Americans speak a language other than English at home or have a limited English proficiency, which often results in a cultural divide between patients and their health plans or healthcare providers. Many healthcare organizations are finding new ways to integrate cultural competency training into their orientations, meetings and lunch hours, as they detailed in an April 2006 online survey sponsored by the Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN).

Cultural Competency in Healthcare: Health Plans and Providers Strive to Speak the Same Language is a complimentary executive summary examining how 110 health plans and providers are improving the quality of and access to care among culturally diverse populations in the United States. More than half of respondents currently practice at least a rudimentary cultural competency awareness program, with others hoping to begin initiatives in the coming year. To download this free report, please visit http://www. hin. com/cgi-local/link/news/pl. cgi? cultcomp (http://www. hin. com/cgi-local/link/news/pl. cgi? cultcomp).

"Communication between patients and staff is obviously a key issue in providing services," says Melanie Matthews, HIN executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Companies are discovering that being prepared for diversity results in both happier patients and improved outcomes. Based on the survey results, HIN is planning a future audio conference on the impact of cultural competency on healthcare quality."

The six-page executive summary, Cultural Competency in Healthcare: Health Plans and Providers Strive to Speak the Same Language, also includes health plans’ and providers’ perspectives on:

Time management and preferred formats for cultural training; Certifying staff members to conduct training sessions; Measuring results in the financial bottom line; and Challenges to cultural competency and the solutions health plans used to overcome them.

While the traditional classroom approach is utilized most often, 21 percent of organizations are using on-site "lunch n’ learn" programs, providing diversity training during the lunch hour. Fifty-four percent of responding providers and almost 72 percent of health plans make attendance at training programs mandatory for their entire staff. Employees’ competencies can be measured with an instrument called Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA), which assesses sensitivity and cultural understanding as well as technical skills that enhance the ability to learn about the world.

As Healthcare Debate Drags On, Consumer-Centered Website Provides Ideas and Tools for Saving Money on Healthcare

The new user-focused interface by HealthHarbor. com puts more information at consumers' fingertips. The website emphasizes being smart healthcare consumers, money-saving healthcare approaches, getting the most out of health coverage, and interactive tools that provide patients with concrete ideas on how to lower their healthcare costs.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) September 1, 2009

HealthHarbor, a leading online consumer healthcare resource, today unveiled a fully redesigned and expanded website (http://www. healthharbor. com), complete with several new interactive health consumer tools as well as improved and increased healthcare-related content. The redesigned website, www. healthharbor. com, further advances HealthHarbor's mission to create smarter consumers of healthcare, and enables users to find new ways to save money on healthcare and get the most value from their health coverage.

In addition to the new user-focused design and easier-to-access content, the site offers four new interactive tools designed to help consumers take more control of their healthcare. The new consumer-centered tools include an Insurance Denial Analyzer, an Affordable Vaccine Finder (http://www. healthharbor. com/affordable-vaccine-finder), and Routine Medical Service Finder focusing on services offered by walk-in retail clinics, and an Affordable Health Coverage search. The new tools join the established Discount Generic Drug Radar, which has helped hundreds of patients since its launch earlier this summer.

"We are excited about the ability to further help healthcare consumers take control of their healthcare situations by putting more complete information at their fingertips," said Heather Johnson, a HealthHarbor Spokesperson. "In addition to the new tools and content, we know that the improved user interface will make our site even more useful for the healthcare consumer community, allowing them to become more savvy about their healthcare and lowering their overall medical costs."

In addition to the expansive content HealthHarbor has offered since its inception, the redesigned site also improves the information available to consumers in the areas of medical tourism, insurance denials, and dealing with medical bills, as well as a new Patient Resource Center (http://www. healthharbor. com/patient-resource-center).

"As the health reform debate drags on, we want people to know that there are things they can be doing today to get more value for their healthcare dollar," added Johnson. "We believe every consumer of healthcare has personal, daily opportunities to drive more value from the healthcare system."

What do Sinatra, Presley, and the Beatles have in common?

What do Sinatra, Presley, and the Beatles have in common?

(PRWEB) September 3, 2005

Sinatra, Presley and the Beatles were, without question, the absolute greats of their era, reaching the pinnacle of fame and fortune. There are others who could be classed in this grouping as well, such as Jolson, Caruso, and even the Rolling Stones with their long running reign in the music industry.

So, too, there are giants in the field of literature.

Shakespeare readily comes to mind, as does Chaucer and Dickens, to name a few. Of more recent note, there’s John Grisham, Steven King, and at the head of the pack, topping them all, is JK Rowling of “Harry Potter” fame.

Mario S. Fedele is a newcomer to this glorious field of the literary realm. He is just starting out and only few know his name. But he has a lot to offer and hopes to gain the attention of the public at large.

His recently published book is titled, “Stories for a Stormy Night, Vol. 1.” It is comprised of two novellas, which are as different in nature as night and day. The stories are respectively titled, “The Fear-O-Lots” and “A Sickness by Any Other Name.”

Some rave reviews have come in and these may be readily viewed at Mario S. FedeleÂ’s website: http://www. freewebs. com/mario5o/ (http://www. freewebs. com/mario5o/)

The tales in “Stories for a Stormy Night, Vol. 1” match the imaginative scope of JK Rowling’s “Harry Potter,” and the fast-paced action of RL Stine’s “Goosebumps” series, making them a very entertaining read.

In addition, it has been said that Mario S. Fedele demonstrates an originality all his own and has a certain way with words, which greatly adds to the enjoyment of the reading.

As if that were not enough to make the read worthwhile, there are valuable lessons to be learned from these delightful tales, the primary ones being the importance of open communication for maintaining a healthy relationship and the necessity to seek help when confronted with insurmountable odds.

So, given the above features, “Stories for a Stormy Night, Vol. 1” should be placed on everyone’s list of books to read.
