Changes to Health Care for Those Over Age 65

Changes to Health Care for Those Over Age 65

Four significant news items are noted this week that affect health care for those over age 65. Collectively, the changes will significantly ease the nation's health care delivery crisis. The four items concerned employer-provided health plans, HSAs, discount drug cards, and Medicare supplement alternatives.

(PRWEB) April 28, 2004

OnlineAdviser News announced four significant items that emerged this past week affecting health insurance for those over age 65:

1) A federal ruling now allows Medicare to be the primary payer for employees covered by Medicare, making their group health insurance much less expensive. Previously, this would have been considered an act of age discrimination against older workers. This change affect 12 million workers and is welcome by employees and labor unions. AARP opposes the change. Employers seeking to change their group health plans should consult an independent adviser – this change will not be automatic and insurance companies may not be helpful at this time.

2) Federal employees over age 65 who enroll in a qualified high deductible health insurance plan and would be eligible for a health savings account (HSA) except for the federal age 65 limitation on HSAs will be offered an equivalent option under a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). This decision is not binding on private industry employers, but is likely to set a precedent, especially for labor union negotiations. A chart showing the differences between HSAs and HRAs can be found at some OnlineAdviser Web sites.

3) Suspicions are beginning to be confirmed by health industry sources that the benefits offered under the Medicare discount drug card are not better than the benefits in the (usually) free discount drug cards already available in the market. Almost all Americans now have access to the same discount cards at little or no cost (either as part of their health plan or as a stand-alone discount card). This comment does not apply to low-income Medicare beneficiaries who receive an extra $600 benefit.

4) Problems with availability and pricing of Medicare supplement insurance is pushing some to consider the supplemental basic health insurance plan like at MedSave (.com). Unlike most Medicare supplement plans, this insurance is available regardless of health history but disappears after age 70.

Considering these four items and other recent health industry news, it appears that significant changes are now being made at a speedy pace in the delivery of heath care in response to our national crisis. After years of complete deadlock and many political stalemates, it now seems at least possible that by NovemberÂ’s presidential election the health care reform platform could be deflated.

ElderCarelink Sponsors Series of Caregiving Surveys To Explore Impact on Family and Professional Caregivers

ElderCarelink Sponsors Series of Caregiving Surveys To Explore Impact on Family and Professional Caregivers

By 2030 almost one out of every five Americans will be 65 or older - the largest percentage of senior citizens in U. S. history. Eldercare issues are fast becoming one of the most critical challenges facing both families and businesses.

Ashland, MA (PRWEB) October 25, 2006

By 2030 almost one out of every five Americans will be 65 or older - the largest percentage of senior citizens in U. S. history. Eldercare issues are fast becoming one of the most critical challenges facing both families and businesses.

ElderCarelink, the leading internet service which connects consumers to providers of eldercare services, is sponsoring a study through a series of surveys designed to help identify and address the growing needs of family and professional caregivers on several different topics. These Caregiving Surveys will initially go to more than 50,000 families who have used ElderCarelink (http://www. eldercarelink. com/?src=pr11_lrs_survey_1&cpgn=press102506) in their search for eldercare - the vast majority (75%) of which are sons and daughters looking for assistance in caring for their parents. The survey will also be available to any additional caregivers, family or professional, who wish to participate at www. eldercarelink. com/research (http://www. eldercarelink. com/research).

The evolving needs and issues (medical, financial and logistical) facing the 72 million Americans who will be 65+ in the next 25 years will affect virtually every family and business across the U. S. "Online resources continue to be the most available and utilized tools for information, services and emotional support by families and professionals who are involved in the many forms of caregiving," noted Robert Brooks, CEO of ElderCarelink.

This study will focus on the issues which are most commonly faced by caregivers, their families, and their aging loved ones. Some of the planned topics for surveys include:

Impact of caregiving on health, job and family  Identifying the hidden costs of caregiving  Which factors and variables "actually" drive eldercare decisions  Assessing family preparedness for long-term care issues  Demographic differences in caregiving and eldercare decision making (e. g., gender, age, income level, education etc.)  Preferences of Caregivers vs. Care Recipients

By amassing a comprehensive database on such a diverse range of eldercare issues, ElderCarelink hopes to provide an important and up-to-date resource for those involved in caregiving. "There have been several important studies done over the years (e. g., Metlife, AARP, etc.) that have focused on the significant sociological evolution that is taking place as baby boomers reach retirement age and beyond," Brooks observed. "This study by ElderCarelink and the resulting information we can offer will provide another relevant and significant resource for those contending with caregiving issues, personally or professionally."

Survey results and associated caregiving resources will be made available to the public, media, and those within the http://eldercarelink. com/?src=pr11_lrs_survey_1&cpgn=press102506 [assisted living (http://www. eldercarelink. com/?src=pr11_lrs_survey_1&cpgn=press102506) industry. Grand Opening Celebration for The Blackstone, A Renaissance Hotel

Grand Opening Celebration for The Blackstone, A Renaissance Hotel

New Life for Chicago's Legendary "Hotel of Presidents"

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 12, 2008

A prominent national landmark, Chicago's "Hotel of Presidents," The Blackstone luxury hotel in Chicago, Illinois, a 332-room luxury Renaissance brand hotel, held its official grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony and an invitational gala on Wednesday, April 30. Since its opening on April 16, 1910, The Blackstone has provided regal lodging for many of the 20th century's most famous figures--from a dozen U. S. presidents, including Franklin Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Harry Truman and John Kennedy, to Hollywood stars. Sage Hospitality, the Denver, Colorado based hospitality company that also manages the property, transformed the shuttered 23-story, Beaux-Arts landmark into a world-class hotel with a $128 benchmark restoration that seamlessly blends the legacy of the Blackstone's architectural heritage with state-of-the-art guest amenities.

Applauding the significance of The Blackstone's redevelopment, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley remarked: "The restoration of The Blackstone hotel is a perfect example of how the public and private sectors can work together to complete a project that creates jobs for our residents, adds a great hotel for visitors to our city and brings back to life a landmark building that plays an important part of Chicago's architectural history."

The Blackstone is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. To preserve its architectural integrity, the famed Chicago hotel on Michigan Avenue was renovated as a "certified historic rehabilitation" in accordance with preservation guidelines established by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and Illustrated Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings. Whenever possible, the Blackstone's significant historic and architectural elements were preserved, refurbished and sensitively incorporated in the renovation design. Chicago artisans painstakingly devoted some 3000 hours refurbishing the ornate plaster embellishments in the hotel's lavish Crystal Ballroom and lobby alone. The project architect for The Blackstone was Chicago-based Lucien LaGrange Architects. Gettys of Chicago and Hong Kong was the interior designer. Joel Straus Consulting served as the Blackstone's art consultant and curator. James McHugh Construction Company was the general contractor for the renovation.

For more information and reservations, please call The Blackstone at 312/447-0955 or visit www. marriott. com/chirh (http://www. marriott. com/chirh), or www. howchicago. blogspot. com for insider views and inner workings of the famous hotel.

Innergy Pilates and Yoga Studio, Inc. is the First Studio of its Kind to Open in Paulding County, Dallas, Georgia

Innergy Pilates and Yoga Studio, Inc. is the First Studio of its Kind to Open in Paulding County, Dallas, Georgia

Pilates and Yoga Studio offers classes for all fitness levels. Offering spa treatments, massage, birthday parties and relaxation retreats.

Dallas, GA (PRWEB) April 30, 2006

Innergy Pilates and Yoga Studio, Inc. is the first pilates and yoga studio to open in Dallas, GA. Owner and Instructor, Jennifer Pridmore who is a Dallas Resident states, “My goal was to bring something unique to my county that has never existed here before. There are pilates and yoga classes taught at fitness gyms, parks, etc. but nothing can compare to what my studio offers.” Uniqueness is definitely something you will find at Innergy Studio. At Innergy, you can take a class, get your eyebrows waxed, get a facial or a massage, buy gifts for just about everyone on your list from candles, lotions, teas, smoothies, and more. Don't forget to check out their trendy logo apparel! "I like to think of my studio as a pilates and yoga spa," states Mrs. Pridmore.

When you walk into the lobby of the studio, you will instantly become refreshed by the light scents of the candles, at home spa treatments and natural skincare products that are available for purchase in the lobby. Students seem to feel a sense of comfort and tranquility at Innergy. “My classes are designed to give that personal touch. I know every one of my students names, and it will always remain that way. I do not pile in large amounts of students into my classes. My absolute maximum in a class is 15. This allows me to focus on the precision of each student’s movement and to make sure that they are properly positioned right down to their fingertips. This is to allow the most benefit of the precise pilates and yoga movements”

Holding many certifications, Mrs. Pridmore is certified through NESTA (National Endurance and Sports Trainers Association) in both Pilates and Yoga. She also has a background as a nurse, which also gives her students a sense of comfort. Soon after Jennifer opened the studio, she hired another instructor, who trained through Jennifer and she also became certified with NESTA. There are currently 3 apprentices training to become pilates and yoga instructors at Innergy. Jennifer is hoping to certify the apprentices by the studios’ 1 year anniversary as well as add on 1 more classroom and 2 spa tanning rooms this August 2006.

Offering Pilates and Yoga classes for all ages and abilities. All classes are taught in 6-week sessions. This allows the busy adult to commit to 6 weeks of classes, and get the most out of their classes by sticking to a routine that works best with their schedule. Offering both pilates and yoga classes 6 days per week, there is something to suit just about everyone’s schedule.

Exciting new pilates and yoga classes this summer will include: Legs and Gleuts class, 6- pack abs class, and cardiogalates (yoga and pilates kicked up a notch with cardio) class. All of these classes will focus on pilates and yoga movements that work most effectively for that specific muscle group. Also, a “Complete Fitness Boot Camp” is offered. This camp consists of pilates and yoga movements, along with basic cardio movements. Lasting 6 weeks, like the pilates and yoga classes, students that “enlist” in the Boot Camp will find faster results due to the level of intensity. “The focus in Boot Camp is to challenge your body through the pilates core conditioning, yoga stretches and basic, but intense cardiovascular movements” Jennifer also mentioned that the Boot Camp is for all fitness levels. Modifications can be made to accommodate previous injuries, knee, back and ankle issues, etc.

In addition to pilates and yoga classes, the studio offers massage and reflexology services, spa treatments, natural manicures and pedicures, waxing, relaxing spa tanning, and has a supervised playroom for children while the parent takes a class. “Offering the playroom to my students is one benefit that I had to offer. As a mother of 2 young daughters, I know what it is like to want to take a class, and do something for yourself, but finding someone or somewhere to take care of your children that you can trust can be somewhat of a challenge. The playroom is staffed with caring, patient caregivers that play with children during the 45 minute or 1 hour class. This allows the mom to relax and enjoy her time, knowing that her child is right down the hall, having fun, too!” The children love to come to the playroom where they sing, make crafts, play dress up, watch movies and eat healthy snacks.

Upcoming events at the studio will include: Summer classes will start May 15th and will run through August 5th. Registration is going on now. Call the studio to sign up. All classes must be preregistered for. Saturday June 24th, Consignment sale and Business Expo to be held at the studio. This event is to benefit the Breast Cancer 3-day walk that will be held in Atlanta October 20 – 22nd 2006. Jennifer, along with her Office Manager, Joelle are participating in the 3-day walk in support of a close friend of Joelle, who is battling breast cancer. To sign up as a vendor for the event, please call the studio.

Spa Princess Camp is going to be offered for 2 weeks this summer at Innergy. June 12 – 16 and July 17 – 21. Offered for girls ages 5 and up. Activities will include: facials manicures, pedicures, princess games, princess crafts, healthy snacks will all be provided. There is a full day and half day option. Please call to register.

The studio also offers group events such as relaxation retreats, self-defense classes, and "girls night out" which includes, dinner, yoga, pedicures and manicures.

Spa Princess parties are the latest hit at Innergy. Offered for girls starting at age 4. There are many packages to choose from including "me and my girl" where each guest brings their favorite doll, and makes a friendship bracelet for the doll and the party guest, mini cupcakes are even provided for the doll, "princess or queen for a day" Prices are very reasonable to fit any budget. The Spa Princess party is one that every girl should experience. Activities at the party can include crafts, such as jewelry making, manicures and pedicures, facials, dancing, games, and more. There are many additional items that the parents can choose to customize the party to make it exactly what their princess would like. One option that is something that will really make the day complete is the limo service. All of the princesses will arrive to the studio in a limousine. All inclusive packages are also offered and that includes the birthday cake! Please call the studio for further information.

“My studio is very unique. I teach all levels of pilates mat and ball classes, sport yoga, relaxation yoga, Fitness Boot Camp, and many other classes that I designed that are primarily based on the principles of pilates and yoga.”

Pilates was founded by Joseph Pilates and has grown in popularity over the past few years. “By using the body’s own resistance, you are able to see the results from my classes much faster than using fancy machines at a gym. It is also much more rewarding to know that you can transform your body, and mind through pilates and yoga. My pilates and yoga classes are designed to go hand-in-hand with each other.” The breathing patterns are very specific in both pilates and yoga. Each movement flows with the breath, allowing the muscles to hold in a position for a set amount of time. There is no rushing through the movements here, only slow deep – controlled breathing which leaves the body oxygenated and refreshed.

No matter what classes you choose to take and Innergy Pilates and Yoga Studio, Inc., you will feel a sense of calmness, fulfillment and most of all a sense of accomplishment that you did something good for yourself in a positive environment. Please call the studio to sign up or for further questions. 770-443-5736.

Jacoby Ellsbury and OWATER Launch New Jacoby-Inspired INFUSED OWATER Flavor

Jacoby Ellsbury and OWATER Launch New Jacoby-Inspired INFUSED OWATER Flavor

OWATER is adding some EllsBERRY to the newest Infused owater flavor. The new Jacoby Ellsbury-inspired healthy sport drink in Strawberry-Pomegranate is available at stores in New England starting this week.

Concord, MA (PRWEB) July 28, 2008

owater, maker of healthy enhanced water, and Jacoby Ellsbury, Boston center fielder, have introduced a new, Jacoby-inspired Strawberry-Pomegranate infused owater flavor to the company's line-up of tasty, healthy sports drinks. The pure water drink is enhanced with real strawberry and pomegranate flavors and a touch of pure cane sugar, and it packs a double punch of electrolytes and antioxidants. The flavor is available only at stores in New England, including most Whole Foods, Stop & Shop and Roche Bros. locations.

"It's pretty crazy that there's now an infused owater flavor with my name on it," said Ellsbury. "What's cool about Strawberry-Pomegranate is that it's healthy, functional and tasty, but it's not too sweet. In my mind, that's the formula for a perfect sports drink. It is definitely going to be fun for me to see people out there drinking it."

"We're just trying to give people honest, healthy alternatives to traditional sports drinks, and adding a Jacoby flavor makes it even more fun," said Tom First, founder and CEO of owater. "Jacoby trains like crazy but he doesn't like over sweetened and neon colored sports and vitamin drinks. Our infused owater is about honest hydration and great flavor. It's the ultimate workout drink for one of the fastest guys in baseball, and, of course, everyone else in the world!"

Jacoby Ellsbury, who is represented by Boras Marketing, partnered with the Massachusetts-based owater brand in April 2008. He has worked with the company on radio advertising campaigns and other brand-building endeavors, and he hydrates with the range of owater's healthy sport drink alternatives when he trains.

Jacoby's infused owater flavor was inspired by Jacoby's love of strawberries and pomegranates, both notably Red fruits. The 70-calorie-per-bottle drink is made with pure water, real fruit flavor and a touch of pure cane sugar. Each bottle of Strawberry-Pomegranate also contains electrolytes (213 mg of magnesium, 106 mg potassium, 50 mg sodium) and antioxidants (21% dv Vitamin A, 21% dv Zinc, 15% dv folic acid) for added benefit. Look for the flavor in stores around New England, including on the special Jacoby display at the front of most New England Stop & Shops as well as at Whole Foods Markets and Roche Brothers locations.

Dayton, OH (PRWEB) January 27, 2010

The US Air Force Global Logistics Support Center selected ODIN, the global leader in RFID software and solutions, to monitor and maintain its entire network of passive RFID readers deployed in the continental United States (CONUS), Alaska and Hawaii. The contract scope covers seven Air Force bases, one Navy base and nearly 150 passive RFID readers. ODIN will be responsible for updating firmware, determining proper configuration, and keeping performance optimized. The contract, including two option years, extends until January 2013.

Passive RFID is growing significantly within the United States Department of Defense (DoD) as well as in commercial industry. The reason for the growth is a decline in price and an increase in performance, especially around tough-to-tag items like metal and liquids. The Air Force is using RFID to improve business process ranging from tracking hazardous material to receiving goods from suppliers.

"As one of the largest passive RFID networks in the government, the Air Force needs to be up and running gaining value from their RFID network 24/7. Our experience from nearly 300 RFID projects, including the largest Department of Defense passive RFID deployment, and all the research we put into EasyMonitor™ and support best practices will really pay dividends for the warfighter," commented Patrick J. Sweeney II, founder of ODIN. He continued, "Now that the Department of Defense is getting savvier around RFID, they realize that the old way of monitoring and maintaining the network would not scale. Consolidating the sustainment takes them to the next generation and opens a door to a higher level of performance."

The seven Air Force bases and one Navy base covered under the contract with RFID networks installed include:
Charleston AFB, SC  Dover AFB, DE  McChord AFB, WA  McGuire AFB, NJ  Norfolk NAT, VA  Travis AFB, CA  Elmendorf AFB, AK  Hikam AFB, HI

Foodservice Sales to Help U. S. Coffee Market Surpass $48 Billion By 2010

Foodservice Sales to Help U. S. Coffee Market Surpass $48 Billion By 2010

A new market research report from Packaged Facts, research publisher, focuses on the U. S. market for coffee and ready-to-drink coffee facts offers a comprehensive look at this $41 billion market.

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 9, 2006

As the second largest U. S. import -- second only to oil -- coffee is a hot commodity, and U. S. consumers down more cups of java than any other country in the world, mostly at coffee shops, restaurants or other foodservice venues. Sales of coffee are expected to grow by a compounded rate of 6.9% from 2005-2010, reaching $48.2 billion by 2010, according to The U. S. Market for Coffee and Ready-to-Drink Coffee, a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts, a division of MarketResearch. com, the leading provider of industry-specific market research reports.

Packaged Facts estimates that the 2005 U. S. coffee market grew to $34.5 billion, an 8.7% jump over 2004. Foodservice is the largest sales channel, accounting for 87.9% of the market. Half of the coffee drunk “out” consists of “regular” coffee, while 42% is a specialty blend. Retail outlets account for the remaining 12.1% of sales, with ground coffee garnering the bulk of those sales.

While actual consumption of coffee is down, the price paid per cup is up significantly as consumer tastes have migrated toward higher-end, novelty brews.

“Across the board we’re seeing an upscaling of product as consumer demand soars,” said Don Montuori, the publisher of Packaged Facts. “Economy brands resurfacing in high-tech, easy-to-use containers; ‘pods’ taking off as a quick way to brew single-cup, espresso-based coffees; savvy marketing touting newly discovered health claims; and sustainable, organic and ‘fair trade’ beans coming into vogue; these and many other factors are driving the current coffee boom as consumer palates are becoming increasingly sophisticated and health - and eco-conscious.”

From bottle blends of Joe-on-the-go, to in-room, hotel coffee service, The U. S. Market for Coffee and Ready-to-Drink Coffee provides a comprehensive look at the enormous foodservice market for coffee and the innovative retail milieu. The report examines new product trends, offers competitive profiles of industry leaders, and analyzes consumer behaviors surrounding coffee. Priced at $3,000, this report can be purchased directly from Packaged Facts by clicking: http://www. packagedfacts. com/pub/1077450.html (http://www. packagedfacts. com/pub/1077450.html). "This is the first major organized event whereby a majority of local tea party and 912 groups have come together to be united in North Texas," said Mel Moss, President, Arlington Tea Party, Inc. "The mo-mentum of the tea parties continues to grow as people become more frustrated with elected politicians and special interest groups."

"We are excited Mark Davis is hosting our event, and we know the people of Texas will benefit from hearing his views on individual liberties, freedom and the Constitution," said Kaaren Teuber, a leader of the grassroots group Texoma Patriots. "The recent back room deals and arrogance in Washington that rammed the Health Care bill down the throats of the American people will result in layoffs, cutbacks in benefits, and rationed healthcare. We must unite together, speak with a single voice, and change the direction of this country."

"Our elected officials can't continue to ignore the wishes of the people and expect us to forget come election day," said Ken Emanuelson, a member of the Steering Committee for Dallas Tea Party "This rally is a golden opportunity for our movement to build our collective membership base and come together to make our voices heard."

The event is presented by the following conservative groups in North Texas: Allen Area Patriots, Ar-lington Tea Party, The Boiling Point Keller, Carrollton Tea Party, Central Texas 912, Dallas Tea Party, Ellis County Conservatives, Farmers Brand Tea Party, Flowermound Tea Party, Frisco Tea Party, Garland Tea Party, Irving Tea Party, Mansfield 912, McKinney Tea Party, NE Tarrant Tea Party, North Central Texas Tea Party, North Texas Tea Party, Plano Tea Party, Richardson Tea Party, Texoma Patriots, We the People of Ellis County, and Weatherford Tea Party.

The Event’s main show will begin at 7 p. m. at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie. Gates will open at 4:30pm with entertainment, pre-show activities for kids, and concessions at the ballpark. We encourage everyone to bring signs for the event with words showing their frustrations with the policies and direction this country is headed. The main show will have speakers, entertainment, and food, and the whole family is wel-come. The event is free, but there are VIP passes and corporate sponsorships available to help offset the production of the event.

Silicone Breast Implants, Top Surgical Procedure for Women: Leading Plastic Surgeon Dispels Myths on This Increasingly Popular Option

Silicone Breast Implants, Top Surgical Procedure for Women: Leading Plastic Surgeon Dispels Myths on This Increasingly Popular Option

According to Eleanor Barone, MD, an aesthetic plastic surgeon at Advanced Dermatology and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in NY and Long Island, "After a 14-year ban, the Food and Drug Administration once again gave its blessing to silicone breast implants. It didn't take long for American women to get the news: breast augmentation is now the top surgical procedure for women. The ASAPS reports that there were nearly 384 thousand breast augmentation surgeries in 2006. We know now that silicone implants are both safe and effective."

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 29, 2007

After a 14-year ban, the Food and Drug Administration once again gave its blessing to silicone breast implants, announcing late last year that silicone-gel implants from two companies - Mentor and Allergan - are now available to women ages 22 and older seeking to reconstruct or augment their breasts.

It didn't take long for American women to get the news: breast augmentation is now the top surgical procedure for women, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In fact, the ASAPS reports that there were nearly 384 thousand breast augmentation surgeries in 2006. Breast augmentation, technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a procedure in which a surgeon inserts an implant behind each breast to enhance its size and/or shape. Most people think of increasing breast size as the only reason a woman might consider breast augmentation surgery, but many choose to have the procedure in order reconstruct one or both breasts after a mastectomy, to restore breast volume lost through pregnancy, dramatic weight loss or the simple fact of aging.

"Surgeons have been using silicone implants since the 1960s," says Eleanor Barone, MD, an aesthetic plastic surgeon at Advanced Dermatology and The Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery. Some people had suggested a link between silicone and a variety of health problems, and in 1991, the FDA concluded that the data submitted by silicone-implant manufacturers did not provide adequate information on the benefits and risks of these devices. "But we know now that silicone implants are both safe and effective." In fact, she notes, a study just published in The Annals of Plastic Surgery found that silicone breast implants do not increase the risk of any serious diseases.

In that report, researchers at the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md., and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., reviewed more than a dozen studies evaluating the risk of cancer in women with cosmetic breast implants. These studies, the researchers found, have been "remarkably consistent" in showing no evidence of an increase in any type of cancer in women with silicone implants. They also many other studies that concluded that there's no link between breast implants and connective tissue diseases (such as fibromyalgia, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis) or to neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. There's also no evidence that children born to women with breast implants are more likely to have birth defects or other health problems.

Silicones are a family of chemical compounds made from silicon, a naturally occurring element found in sand and rock that becomes silicone when combined with oxygen, carbon and hydrogen (next to oxygen, silicon is the most common element in the earth's crust). Silicones have been used for over 50 years in products like hairspray and moisturizing creams, as well as medical devices such as artificial joints, catheters, and facial implants.

The FDA's decision to approve silicone-filled breast implants is good news for patients looking to improve the appearance of their breasts, says Dr. Barone. For one thing, it gives women an option over saline-filled implants. "All breast implants are made from a solid silicone rubber shell that's filled with either saline solution (sterile salt water) or elastic silicone gel," she explains. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types, but, generally speaking, silicone implants just look and feel more natural, Dr. Barone says.

Silicone gel is viscous, she says. "It has a thick, sticky consistency that's a lot like human fat, which is a large component of female breast tissue." On the other hand, saline solution isn't compressible, so it looks - and feels - firmer. "Saline implants can feel like water balloons," she explains. And the bigger the implant, the more that becomes a problem.

Of course, as with any other medical device or surgery, breast implants are not without risk, Dr, Barone stresses. "Any man-made device has a finite life span," she says. "It may need to be replaced, and it can tear, although that possibility is rare." If a saline-filled implant ruptures, the implant will deflate and the water will be absorbed harmlessly by the body. If a silicone implant ruptures, the gel may remain within the shell or rarely escape into the breast. (Today's silicone-filled implants are less likely to rupture than earlier models, thanks to a multi-layer shell.) "If your silicone implant breaks or leaks, you might not be aware of it," Dr. Barone cautions. For that reason, you should have an ultrasound exam or MRI screening every year to assess the condition of your implants. And just as you would if you didn't have implants, you also should practice a monthly breast self-exam and schedule regular diagnostic breast screenings.

Bio: Eleanor Jane Barone, M. D., is a widely respected surgeon and expert on plastic surgery procedures for both face and body. She is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery since 2003. Born in Vicenza, Italy, and fluent in Italian, Spanish and English, Dr. Barone was surgical resident and, later, chief resident in the department of surgery at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Before joining Advanced Dermatology in August, she was in private practice in Sarasota, and Bradenton, Florida, as well as Kahului, Hawaii. Dr. Barone and Advanced Dermatology and The Center for Laser & Cosmetic Surgery have been used as a resource center educating dermatologists, laser surgeons and cosmetic surgeons and others about lasers, cancer and cosmetic surgery. www. advancedd. com.

Latitude Finds That People Want Real-Time Information to Make Smarter Food Purchases

Latitude Finds That People Want Real-Time Information to Make Smarter Food Purchases

New study finds that people want real-time information to make smarter food purchases. Download Latitude's summary of findings for The Interactive Future of Food study at http://www. life-connected. com/cms/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/The-Interactive-Future-of-Food-Latitude-Research. pdf.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 22, 2010

As smartphone adoption continues to increase, people expect mobile devices to improve their everyday lives - right down to making smart decisions about food, according to Latitude's newest study The Interactive Future of Food (http://www. life-connected. com/cms/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/The-Interactive-Future-of-Food-Latitude-Research. pdf).

Latitude (http://www. latd. com) is an international research consultancy that explores how new information and communications technologies can enhance human experiences. The study, designed by senior analyst Marina Miloslavsky, collected and analyzed data from participants across the world that shared personal narratives about a time they needed more information while grocery shopping. Participants were then asked to imagine new or existing technology solutions that they felt would best address their needs.

The goal of the study was to learn how technology could be applied in innovative ways to help people access food information at the moment of purchase - to assist good decision-making and to create a more intelligent store experience.

More than half (56%) of study participants expressed a need for more product information such as health, food origins, organic vs. non-organic, farming practices, food safety or ingredient details, while 31% requested information that was logistical in nature, such as location in store, price and inventory status.

"We chose food shopping for this study because it's an experience we all have in common. We found that people want to make better decisions and, regardless of age and technology adoption, now inherently expect mobile technology to help them do so," explains Neela Sakaria, Vice President of Latitude. "This now-mainstream desire to access relevant information at the exact moment it matters most has far-ranging implications for brands and retailers - implications which they've only just begun to explore."

Regardless of the type of information sought, participants (3 in 10 - which was six times the number who actually used smartphones while shopping) were equally likely to suggest a mobile phone solution, with 43% of these participants specifying the use of a smartphone application. 16% of all participants went so far as to mention barcode scanning (including mobile-ready QR codes) or RFID tags/sensors as a means of instantly accessing background product information through physical, device-driven interactions with the product itself.

The study findings suggest that improved information access via mobile solutions can have a significant impact on offline purchasing decisions - which means that retailers can profit by providing customers with in-store tools to retrieve additional product information. People want to make healthy, environmentally conscious choices and new technology solutions can help by improving the way we shop for food, the way it gets delivered and ultimately, the way it is produced and distributed.

"Study participants intuitively understood how real-time technology can improve purchasing decisions, which presents a growing opportunity for both retailers and brands to build positive relationships with customers. But it also means marketers should be wary of trying to 'pull one over' on people," adds Sakaria. "Thanks to mobile, people will be bringing to bear not only everything they've heard about your brand before walking into the store, but also everything that's possible to learn on the Web while standing right in front of your product in the grocery aisle. If retailers and brands don't jump in and actively provide customers with that information, they'll inevitably find it elsewhere."

About the Study
The 2010 Interactive Future of Food study was designed by Latitude (and published in conjunction with Shareable. net) to understand how new connectivity - improved accessibility, transparency, organization and socialization of information - alters our desires and decisions around food and food-purchasing, with implications for retail experiences in general.

Latitude asked nearly 100 participants to tell them a personal narrative about a specific time they needed more information while food shopping, and then asked each participant to suggest an innovative technology solution which could address that information need.

Latitude 42s: an Open Innovation Series
Latitude 42s (http://www. life-connected. com/about/) are an ongoing series of open innovation research studies that Latitude publishes in the spirit of knowledge-sharing and opportunity discovery. Unified by a common digital thread, the 42s explore a range of everyday human experiences most likely to shape the future of commerce, communication, and civic life, from food information access to the new sharing economy to the Internet of Things.

Far East Living's 2nd Anniversary Party Thursday, June 28, 2007, 5:30pm - 8:00pm; 540 University Avenue @ Tasso, Downtown Palo Alto, CA.

Palo Alto, Calif. (PRWEB) June 27, 2007

Far East Living, an upscale boutique offering custom tailored designer apparel by Esther Yei Shih, today announced that they will be celebrating their 2nd Anniversary on Thursday, June 28, 2007 from 5:30pm - 8:00pm at 540 University Ave in Palo Alto, CA.

The celebration has taken on a life of its own with many local and international partners requesting to participate. Majoy Dulay (http://www. jaededgeisha. com), a representative from Rimmel Cosmetics, the top selling color cosmetics brand in the U. K. which has been available in the U. S. since 2000, was the first to approach owner/designer Esther Yei Shih about hosting an event offering mini-makeovers to help launch their new line, Rimmel U (http://www. myspace. com/rimmelu).

The timing coincided perfectly with Far East Living's 2nd Anniversary. Shih was then approached by National Certified Medical Assistant Tanya Tucker (http://working. newvision. net) to give complimentary consultations and distribute samples of Mangosteen Plus, a powerful multivitamin formulation that contains 12 full-spectrum vitamins in a base of antioxidant-rich ingredients originating in Southeast Asia, and San Francisco based photographer Kevin Chin (http://www. kevinchin. com) to exhibit his latest collection of fine art photography of Asian landscapes.

"I wanted to host a customer appreciation event to pamper my wonderful clients but my 2nd Anniversary Party has exceeded even my own expectations and will prove to be a fantastic treat for all who attend!" said Shih. Shih attributes her success to rave reviews shared by her loyal clientele with their friends due to Far East Living's very high level of customer service and truly timeless offerings.

"You can wear my pieces today, in 3 years or in 30 years," Shih added. Despite the out-of-the-way location, Far East Living's client base has consistently grown. "My biggest challenge is in getting people to find us. Once they've discovered Far East Living, we have a very high repeat customer ratio," said Shih.

Even Oscar Nominated Actress Michelle Pfeiffer has returned again recently, 2 days before the IN STYLE Palo Alto (http://www. instylepaloalto. com) benefit fashion show earlier this month which Far East Living co-produced.

Guests will also be treated to a mini-acupuncture session by Timothy Nguyen, MS, LAc, Dipl. OM, a founder of the neighboring Energy Wellness Center which opened last month at 528-B University Avenue offering acupuncture, herbs, Qigong, massage, nutrition and ionic detox, as well as a mini-massage by Gertrude Chatman, a founder of The Total Being which offers a customized selection of natural health and health education services with programs that are realistically affordable to a racially diverse and economically challenged target population, plus drawing prizes every half hour and delectable complimentary light bites.

Far East Living's 2nd Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, June 28, 2007 from 5:30pm - 8:00pm. For more information and to RSVP, please visit http://www. fareastliving. com (http://www. fareastliving. com) or call (650) 328-0880.
