Down Economy Creates Need for Affordable Acupuncture

Down Economy Creates Need for Affordable Acupuncture

Affordable Acupuncture clinic opens to provide access to acupuncture and Chinese Medicine during tough economic times. Staffed by experienced, professional acupuncturists, Affordable Acupuncture provides one-on-one treatments in private room settings at a lower cost than most acupuncture schools, private acupuncture practices and community acupuncture clinics.

Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) June 24, 2009

Even in good times holistic healthcare can be expensive. Most treatments are not covered by insurance and can cost patients hundreds if not thousands of dollars per month. Regardless, visits to alternative medical providers continue to rise as Americans look for help with chronic conditions, pain and general well-being in places other than their doctor's and pediatrician's offices often at great expense to themselves.

"I don't think people should have to live in pain because they can't afford to get help," says Naomi Richman, the founder and president of Affordable Acupuncture in Scottsdale, AZ. "Our goal is to offer high-quality, low-cost acupuncture and Chinese Medicine that everyone can afford. People should be able to get the care they need at a price that fits their budget."

Richman says that the idea for Affordable Acupuncture arose out of a growing need for low-cost acupuncture clinics. "Times are tough. People don't have the expendable income they once did," says Richman.

One response to these tough economic times has been an increase in community acupuncture clinics. Community clinics offer acupuncture in one large room where patients sit on recliners. Their fees are based on a sliding scale and generally run between $15 and $45 dollars.

"I think community acupuncture is a great concept," says Richman, "but because you are treating many people in one room and only from the front, I think you are limited in what you can treat and who will come into your office. I like privacy during treatments so I can fully relax without distractions. I wanted patients to have access to that same quality of care."

The Affordable Acupuncture clinic consists of a number of single-bed rooms playing soothing music. Patient's come in with a wide variety of conditions including allergies, asthma, headaches, back and neck pain, infertility, digestive problems, sleep issues, fatigue and stress. Some also come in for routine health maintenance. "Chinese medicine is most effective when patients have multiple treatments. It also emphasizes prevention. Because our rates are so low, people can afford to come in a number of times when they struggling with a chronic condition or attempting to get pregnant. They also come in for treatments when they are just starting to feel run down or before a stressful event to prevent themselves from getting sick," says Richman.

Treatments at Affordable Acupuncture include: acupuncture, ear acupuncture, cupping, electro-acupuncture, shiatsu massage and herbal consultations. Treatments range from $20-$40 for Chinese Medicine and acupuncture and $60 for a 50-minute shiatsu massage.

Protect Your Throat and Voice During Cold and Flu Season

Protect Your Throat and Voice During Cold and Flu Season

When it comes to respiratory viruses, we’re trapped. There is no way we can escape them. But, we can somewhat protect ourselves – and our voices – by increasing our ability to resist these vile, airborne microbes and decreasing our exposure to them.

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) December 23, 2005

When it comes to respiratory viruses, we’re trapped. There is no way we can escape them. But, we can somewhat protect ourselves – and our voices – by increasing our ability to resist these vile, airborne microbes and decreasing our exposure to them.

“This cold and flu season, let a sore throat be your signal,” says renowned voice coach Renee Grant-Williams. “A sore throat is often nature’s first way of telling you that something is wrong. Don’t use sore throat remedies that numb the pain. The pain is there to put you on notice not to overuse your voice at this time.”

Grant-Williams suggests that at the first sign of a sore throat, you do two things.

“First, grab some zinc lozenges. They work wonders,” says Grant-Williams. “Zinc lozenges have proven to be most effective in fighting colds when an infection is in its first stages. Start taking them as soon as you have the first hint of a sore throat.”

Second, kick-in with back-to-the-basics remedies for maintaining a healthy voice (these are behaviors you should practice even before you feel a sore throat):

Get plenty of rest. Just as having too little rest fatigues your back, legs and mind, it fatigues your throat and voice too. You are the only person who knows how much sleep you need. Listen to your body – and sleep, nap and take breaks accordingly.

Drink plenty of fluids. Without enough water, you can dry your throat out like a thirsty plant. Drink more water than you think you actually need – at least eight glasses a day.

Eat well. Avoid alcohol and stay away from foods and drinks with caffeine. They dehydrate you – and your throat. This includes chocolate, tea, coffee and soft drinks. Also, limit dairy products because they tend to produce mucus.

Keep a constant body temperature. Avoid overly air-conditioned rooms, excessively heated rooms, and frequent exposure to cold weather outside.

Reduce stress. Being overworked mentally or emotionally will drain your body as much as being overworked physically.

The best advice for minimizing exposure to respiratory ailments in the first place is to avoid contact with people who are sick – and to be careful with what you touch.

“Especially watch out for items handled by multiple people,” says Grant-Williams. “When you touch a telephone, pen, money, or microphone, you may be sharing germs with the last few people who handled them. Even your own toothbrush can be an illness waiting to happen. Replace your toothbrush often so it doesn’t become a breeding ground for dangerous microbes.”

Grant-Williams coaches business executives, sales professionals and celebrities including Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, the Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Linda Ronstadt, Randy Travis and Huey Lewis. Record labels, producers and managers rely on her to help fine-tune their artists. She has been quoted by Cosmopolitan, TV Guide, Business Week, Southern Living, US Weekly, the Associated Press, UPI, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe, and the San Francisco Chronicle. She has appeared on many broadcast outlets including ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, Bravo, USA, MTV, GAC, BBC, PBS, and NPR. Grant-Williams is a former instructor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music as well as the former director of the Division of Vocal Music at the University of California, Berkeley.

Thelma-US Partners with ClaimRemedi

ClaimRemedi, a provider of insurance claim revenue management solutions, announced recently they have signed an agreement with ICSGlobal Limited, an eHealth company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Under the agreement, ClaimRemedi will provide electronic claims processing and claims management services to ICSGlobal's US subsidiary, Thelma-US.

Santa Rosa, CA (PRWEB) November 18, 2008

ClaimRemedi, a provider of insurance claim revenue management solutions, announced recently they have signed an agreement with ICSGlobal Limited, an eHealth company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. Under the agreement, ClaimRemedi will provide electronic claims processing and claims management services to ICSGlobal's US subsidiary, Thelma-US.

"ClaimRemedi brings additional transaction volume, more access to healthcare payers, and a set of powerful claims management technology toolsets, into the medical banking network that Thelma-US is developing," said B. P. Fulmer, president and CEO of Thelma-US. "With transactions between our existing partners -- MedData, SSI and RMS -- set to go live very soon, the best and fastest way for Thelma-US to build volume, expand functionality and increase margins is through mutually beneficial partnerships like the one with ClaimRemedi, where we can "bolt on" their technology to our medical banking network," Fulmer. added.

"This partnership with Thelma-US will allow us to expand our revenue base and improve our margins just by connecting to Thelma and making use of the other partnerships they have put in place," commented Robert Bleyhl, president of ClaimRemedi.

The opportunity for Thelma in the US arises from the fact that there are numerous established eHealth organizations, many of whom specialize in only a few of the 11 different electronic transaction types that are required for full "medical banking." Thelma-US acts as a hub or "interchange" to vertically integrate this myriad of transaction streams into a complete national electronic "medical banking network."

Tim Murray, CEO of ICSGlobal, explained, "The ClaimRemedi agreement is evidence of the momentum that the Thelma-US management team is developing, with their focus on organic growth and acquisitions The sheer size of the US healthcare system, together with our management team that has the local knowledge and contacts to extract maximum value from our Thelma assets, makes it a very exciting market for ICSGlobal to be operating in. I expect the US will rapidly become our major market."

About ICSGlobal
Founded in 1990, ICSGlobal listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1999 [ASX:ICS]. ICSGlobal's global medical banking growth strategy involves the expanded deployment of Thelma in the Australian, UK and US markets. Roska Direct Tapped to Provide Direct-to-Patient Relationship Marketing for Asacol

Roska Direct Tapped to Provide Direct-to-Patient Relationship Marketing for Asacol

(PRWEB) November 17, 2000

Montgomeryville, PA, November, 2000— Roska Direct (www. roskadirect. com) announced today that they have signed an agreement with Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals (www. pgpharma. com) to handle all relationship marketing for Procter & Gamble’s ulcerative colitis drug, Asacol, and the drug’s Web site, www. living-better. com. According to Rae Ann Mang, Asacolâ brand manager, “We are especially impressed by Roska Direct’s innovative creative, strategic thinking and successful track record in DTP marketing over the Internet. We know they are the Agency to develop the direct marketing campaign that Asacol needs to drive compliance and persistency among its users.”

“We are very excited to be working with such a progressive team,” confirmed Roska Direct executive vice president, Jay Bolling. The Agency has been successful in the development of revolutionary interactive marketing campaigns for pharmaceuticals, especially one-to-one relationship marketing. “More than ten years in direct-to-patient relationship marketing and seven years of Web-based marketing have taught us that patients at various stages of a disease must be addressed differently to increase compliance and perseverance with prescribed medications,” explained Bolling. “Our experience has allowed us to develop The Roska Direct Five Key Elements to Successful Relationship Marketing that ensure the proper balance of patient communications and education, provider and family involvement, and incentives to motivate patients to take their medications as advised. Targeted direct marketing for Asacol’s comprehensive and user-friendly Web site, living-better. com, is the best way to pursue and measure the increased persistency of Asacolâ users.”

The World Wide Web is by far the fastest growing medium for DTP relationship marketing. With access to the Web, a brand can start from scratch and target their exact audience without expending their marketing budget on broad-reaching, expensive campaigns. USA Today has reported that in 1998 more than 22 million adults in the United States used and visited an estimated 15,000 health-related Web sites. In addition, Cyber Dialogue has reported that 10 million Americans are using the Internet to find pharmaceutical information. Off-line, these individuals will spend a projected $150 billion for health-related services. According to the same source, it is projected that the number of Internet health consumers will reach close to 90 million by 2005.

New Mobile Mammography Unit Offers Residents of Rural Northern Louisiana First-Ever Access to Free Breast Cancer Screening Exams

New Mobile Mammography Unit Offers Residents of Rural Northern Louisiana First-Ever Access to Free Breast Cancer Screening Exams

Health information exchange technology gives patients initial breast cancer screening results within minutes of exams in high-tech mobile unit.

Farmerville, LA (Vocus) April 1, 2009

A breakthrough partnership is bringing free digital mammograms for the first time to over-40 women who live in the rural parishes of northern Louisiana.

Starting today, a new mobile mammography unit will visit Union General Hospital in Farmerville, Louisiana, where mammograms have not been available. The mobile unit transmits digital images to radiologists who perform an initial screening and then notify patients if they need a follow-up exam by another physician.

Screening for breast cancer through mammography reduces mortality due to breast cancer by approximately 20-25 percent over 10 years among woman aged 40 years and over, according to 2008 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2006, 24 percent of women in Louisiana aged 40 years or older reported not having had a mammogram within the previous two years.

“With a brief visit to the mobile unit, a woman living in rural Louisiana can now have her mammogram read and receive a report while she is still dressing,” said Jamie Welch, the Chief Information Officer for the Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange (LARHIX). “Most women in Northern Louisiana parishes have never had a similar opportunity to detect breast cancer early and protect their health.”

The mobile mammogram unit is the result of a partnership between LARHIX, the Louisiana Rural Hospital Coalition, Inc. (LRHC) and the Partners in Wellness program at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, designated a Center for Excellence in Cancer Research, Treatment and Education, at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport (LSUHSC-S). The unit will target women age 40 and older who have not had a mammogram performed in a year or more and are uninsured or under-insured.

Purchased by Partners in Wellness through a state grant, the new mobile digital mammography unit transmits mammography images from rural Louisiana parishes to the Cancer Center in Shreveport. LARHIX uses a health information exchange technology from Carefx Corp. called Fusionfx, which aggregates patient information across existing systems, departments and facilities and offers clinicians single, clinically relevant views of patient information. LARHIX is working with Partners in Wellness to bring these diagnostic services to rural areas where mammography is either unavailable or requires extensive travel.

The pilot project begins this month at Union General Hospital and then Christus Coushatta Hospital in Coushatta Parish.

About the Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange:
The Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange (LARHIX), in conjunction with the Louisiana Rural Hospital Coalition, Inc. (LRHC) and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport (LSUHSC-S), initiated a health information exchange project in 2008 to link eventually 24 hospitals in Louisiana. LARHIX selected an integrated platform provided by the collaboration of four leaders in open systems and interoperability standards – Carefx, CA, IBM and Initiate Systems – to realize its vision of a federated, patient-centric regional eHealth initiative that maintains a secure and reliable infrastructure for the timely and accurate electronic sharing of clinical information between community providers in North Louisiana and the LSUHSC-S.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) August 27, 2004

Westlake Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery announced today the addition of Sculptra to the procedures it offers. Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis is one of approximately 70 physicians nationwide selected and trained by Aventis Pharmaceuticals in use of this revolutionary new product/procedure. Nikolaidis recently spent three days in Chicago and one week in Germany training with world-renown cosmetic surgeons and representatives from Aventis in the use of what medical professionals and beauty experts are billing as the “liquid facelift.”

Sculptra works by both filling in lines and wrinkles and by stimulating the body to produce new collagen and underlying tissue, thereby creating a fuller, more youthful appearance.

“This product will transform the field of cosmetic surgery,” said Nikolaidis. “Unlike other fillers, such as Restylane and Cosmoplast, which last only a few months, Sculptra’s effects last up to two years or more.”

Sculptra is marketed under the trade name NEW-FILL® in Europe, where it has been used since 1999 as a wrinkle-filling product. It has been used by an estimated 100,000 people in more than 30 countries throughout Europe and South America to treat facial volume imperfections, including signs of aging, such as wrinkles, folds, dark circles and sunken cheeks.

“Facial lipoatrophy is a condition that results in loss of fat in the cheeks, temples and eye sockets. The sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, indentations and wrinkling may make a person appear exhausted and unhealthy,” said Dr. Sharon Levy, Senior Director of Scientific & Medical Affairs for Dermik Laboratories, the United States arm of Aventis Pharmaceuticals. Sculptra is the first truly effective product/procedure designed to alleviate this condition.

Obesity and Inactivity -- The Biggest Threat to the Nation’s Health

Obesity and Inactivity -- The Biggest Threat to the Nation’s Health

America’s health reform will be severely compromised without an all out war on obesity and inactivity. TrekDesk offers a valuable tool in the nation’s biggest health battle.

Phoenix, AZ (Vocus) December 9, 2009

A critical component to the success of the current health care overhaul and the biggest challenge facing most Americans today is acquiring sufficient amounts of daily physical activity to combat obesity and the onset of America’s most dangerous health adversaries: heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Treadmill desks represent a unique solution that allow individuals the opportunity of obtaining healthy exercise to combat the rising tide of obesity while still completing their work responsibilities at the office.

A study published with the annual America’s Health Rankings report cast a long shadow on the future of American health care by predicting that by 2018 43% of the adult American population will be obese and the cost of obesity related diseases will more than quadruple to $344 annually, 21% of the total health care spending.

Stated simply, obesity has become a threat not only to our health but economic security and sustainable quality of life.

Currently, health care providers are incentivized to treat disease more than to prevent it. They often see the patient at the point where care is most expensive and least likely to be effective. Greater emphasis on screening, prevention and patient education are essential.

Employers over the last generation have engineered movement out of the workspace environment and should be encouraged to re-engineer the work place with a variety of measures which introduce natural movement back into the workplace. We evolved over millions of years as an upright species dependent upon movement for overall health, this must be reintroduced into the work environment or even the best potential outcome of healthcare reform will have been in vain.

One solution that is showing promise to both corporate employees and home office users is the TrekDesk treadmill desk. TrekDesk is a full sized, height adjustable workstation designed to attach to an existing treadmill.

“We originally designed TrekDesk to be used by small businesses and home office users but have had significant interest from corporate users as well due to cost efficiencies.” states Steve Bordley, owner of TrekDesk. “Allowing users to add TrekDesk to an existing treadmill or to select a specific brand of treadmill has many distinct advantages. First, the cost basis is much lower. TrekDesk also offers users the opportunity of capitalizing on the incline features of a treadmill. In essence an employee can burn 2x the amount of calories walking at the same slow speed while working. An added benefit for home users is the dual use capacity of the treadmill, they can walk during their work day and use it later as a running machine if they so choose.”

The health benefits of daily walking are well documented. Previous studies have shown that overweight individuals who engage in regular exercise have even less health risks than normal weight individuals who are sedentary however more recent studies spotlight the need to both stay active during the day and lose excess pounds.

“Chairs are the enemy,” states Bordley, “once employers realize this and adopt measures to keep their employees moving during the day they will see a boost in productivity and a decrease in sick days and health care costs. Many companies are rotating employees on two hour shifts to treadmill desks, the health benefits are becoming obvious.”

Daily use of a treadmill desk can also help prevent many major diseases, increase productivity, boost mood, and restore health. “People seem to focus most on the weight loss achieved by using a treadmill desk which can be significant however the health restorative, mental and mood enhancing benefits are significant as well,” states Bordley.

FunAsset Adds CleanMail to Its Bulk Mail Discount Solutions

FunAsset Adds CleanMail to Its Bulk Mail Discount Solutions

FunAsset's suite of bulk mail discount software solutions has been bolstered with the introduction of CleanMail On Demand.

Ilminster, UK (PRWEB) June 6, 2005

FunAsset, a UK leader in enterprise connectivity, data conversion and output management solutions since 1988, has updated its successful On Demand software so organisations sending over 1000 items of UK mail in a single run can take advantage of the Royal MailÂ’s CleanMail bulk mail discount service.

The inclusion of CleanMail has bolstered the number of discount services the On Demand software can handle to nine – MailSort 120 (OCR), MailSort 120 (CBC), MailSort 700, MailSort 1400, WalkSort, CleanMail (OCR), CleanMail (CBC), CleanMail Plus (OCR) and CleanMail Plus (CBC).

"Organisations now only need to integrate a single software solution to take advantage of any one of the numerous postal discount rates offered by the Royal Mail", comments Mark Williams, Marketing Coordinator for FunAsset. "More importantly, CleanMail On Demand opens the door for organisations previously unable to meet the minimum mail quantity requirements of MailSort and WalkSort."

The concept behind CleanMail On Demand is identical to its counterparts - MailSort and WalkSort On Demand. Mail data from almost any source (mainframe, server or PC) is analysed and processed on-the-fly prior to being output in a format that adheres to the Royal MailÂ’s stringent address stipulations.

No changes are needed to an organisationÂ’s mail operation and no separate address database is required (a prerequisite for most other bulk mail applications).

"CleanMail On Demand saves significant amounts of money on postage day in day out", states Mark. "Not only that, users can quickly and easily upgrade to MailSort or WalkSort On Demand if their mailing circumstances change."

If you would like to find out how you could save significant amounts on money on your postage by using CleanMail On Demand, please visit funasset. com.

Analog power management products, which include voltage regulators and voltage references, will continue to revive the analog market, which has grown into becoming a substantial proportion of the total semiconductor industry, rising from 15% in 1999 to 19% by 2008.

Fueled by a growing mobile population, which relies heavily upon leading edge battery management technologies and “cordless” power, the analog power IC market is expected to grow by 22% this year. This report forecasts for voltage regulators, and power management products including switching regulators, linear regulators, and voltage references, calls for an increase of 22% in 2003, followed by 15% growth in 2004. Over a five-year period, the forecast calls for a healthy compound annual growth rate of 16% from 2003 through 2008. Voltage regulators, an integral part of the power management market, are expected to continue demand growth in 2003, and this growth will accelerate 2004. The ongoing IT upgrade cycle, improved economic conditions, and a wireless replacement trend will continue to elevate this market.

Parental Alienation Disorder Leaps into Mental Health History with the American Psychiatric Association

Parental Alienation Disorder Leaps into Mental Health History with the American Psychiatric Association

Parental Alienation Conference - Mt. Sinai School of Medicine www. cspas. ca - October 2nd and October 3rd.

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 14, 2010

Psychological research and studies have been investigating the phenomenon known as Parental Alienation for the last 60 years. Today, most mental health professionals regard it as a form of child abuse. During the year parental alienation also leaped into mental health history, as the American Psychiatric Association announced it is now considering - Parental Alienation Disorder for inclusion in DSM-5. There are 3 possible ways for P. A.D. to get into DSM-5: in the main body of Appendix A as a mental dis-order, in Appendix B as a relational problem or in Appendix A in one of the appendices of DSM-5 under Criteria Sets and Axes for further study.

The inclusion of Parental Alienation Disorder could help 200,000 children in American every year who suffer from this condition. It could also help abate this form of child abuse and bring families better treatment solutions along the way. In one of the American Journal's of Family Therapy, Dr. William Bernet defined parental alienation as a mental condition in which a child - usually one whose parents are engaged in a high conflict divorce - allies himself or herself strongly with one parent and rejects a relationship with the other parent without legitimate justification. "

In NYC an international conference on parental alienation will be taking place at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine - October 2nd and October 3rd in the Stern Auditorium. Joseph Goldberg, Founder of the CSPAS conference said, " The conference is important to every mental health professional involved in helping children and families. It also presents an opportunity for many family lawyers to educate themselves in ways that can help their clients obtain court interventions that are appropriate to helping these children."

If you are interested in attending the conference please visit and register online at http://www. CSPAS. ca/nyc (http://www. cspas. ca/nyc) or call 647-476-3170. For all media list inquiries about and for the event please contact 646.370.3458.

Entries in 22 creative categories are judged against a stringent set of standards. During the blind judging events (entering company names withheld) judges search for innovative and creative concepts, strong executions and the ability to communicate and persuade.

"Winning a Summit Creative Award is a significant accomplishment. The combination of our excellent judges and the tough judging criteria ensures that only deserving entries receive Summit recognized." Said Jocelyn Luciano, Executive Director--Summit International Awards. "It was an exciting year to watch and listen to the judges' debate the details of individual entries. Making the decisions of which ones receive the top spots is hard."

The Summit Creative Awards judges come from top international creative agencies, including: Ogilvy One Worldwide (US), Paragon Marketing Communications (Kuwait), Harrison & Star (US), doug agency (Canada), MCN | Middle East Communications Network, Stellar Debris Creative Studios (Japan), Bloom (Ireland), EvoLogue (US), MFX, Inc. National Health Program Realigns To Extend Nurse Home Visitation Services On Nationwide Level

National Health Program Realigns To Extend Nurse Home Visitation Services On Nationwide Level

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a national nonprofit organization committed to producing enduring improvements in the health and well being of low-income, first-time parents and their children. The NFP National Office located in Denver, Colorado, helps communities replicate and sustain an evidence-based program of home visiting by registered nurses.

Denver, CO (PRWEB) December 4, 2004

Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), the nationÂ’s only nurse home visitation program that has been proven effective at helping low-income, first-time mothers prepare for successful parenthood and raise healthy children, has moved forward with plans to replicate the program nationally. The program, which has for several years been affiliated with and partially supported by the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, has realigned into an independent non-profit organization.

Nurse-Family Partnership will continue its collaboration with the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences CenterÂ’s Prevention Research Center (PRC), whose director, Dr. David Olds, founded the program in 1978. Dr. OldsÂ’ ongoing research, evaluation and development of existing and newly-implemented sites is critical in steadily improving the nurse home visitation program.

Nurse-Family Partnership is a voluntary prevention program that provides home visitation services by highly educated nurses, beginning early in pregnancy through the childÂ’s second year. Nurses provide support, education and counseling on health, behavioral and self-sufficiency issues. In collaboration with in-state partners; Invest in Kids (IIK) and Public/Private Ventures (PPV), Nurse-Family Partnership currently supports a network of over 170 sites in 20 states, reaching over 258 counties and 13,500 families. The goal of NFP is to make the program available to all low-income, first-time mothers across the U. S.

Nurse-Family Partnership is the most rigorously tested program of its kind. Randomized controlled trials conducted over the past 30 years have shown that, supported by regular visits from professional registered nurses, NFP mothers fare far better than their peers not receiving similar services. NFP mothers are less likely to abuse or neglect their children, have subsequent unintended pregnancies, or misuse alcohol or drugs; and they are more likely to move off welfare and successfully maintain stable employment. In light of these proven outcomes, Nurse-Family Partnership has been praised by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Justice, the Office of the Surgeon General, and the PresidentÂ’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.

To oversee its expansion, Nurse-Family Partnership has formed a national board of directors, comprising dedicated, executive-level professionals in the fields of health and child development, social policy, marketing and communications, law and financial management.

The New York-based Edna McConnell Clark Foundation is providing NFP a significant portion of the funding needed to replicate nationally. The FoundationÂ’s investment is part of its ongoing effort to help high-performing youth serving organizations increase their capacity to serve more young people from low-income backgrounds with high-quality, effective programs. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which has consistently supported research of the program model since 1979, contributed funding for research and development of the replication process. Generous support has also come from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Mabel Hughes Charitable Trust, the Picower Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control.

Paquin Healthcare Announces Healthcare Retail ’08 Conference in Las Vegas

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) February 27, 2008 –-

Paquin Healthcare Companies, Inc. today announced the Healthcare Retail ’08 Conference, to take place at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be held June 9 and 10, 2008.

The two-day conference will feature speakers and presentations covering all aspects of healthcare retail, including business strategy, case studies, ecommerce, direct marketing, hospital-owned stores and gift shops, non-profit tax issues, loyalty programs and merchandising solutions.

"Healthcare retail is gaining momentum as a new strategy for hospitals and healthcare systems to generate sustainable, non-reimbursed revenue sources,” states Tony Paquin, CEO, Paquin Healthcare Companies. “Many hospitals are generating millions in high-margin retail revenue, yet there is a real shortage of information and education available. This conference will be a major step in filling that gap.”

The company has arranged for several industry-leading speakers from both the healthcare and retail industries. Case studies and presentations by hospital executives are also planned, and there will be exhibits by vendors providing retail services and products to hospitals and health systems.

This year’s keynote presentation features Alicia Ledlie, Senior Director of Health Business Development of Wal-Mart Stores, who will speak to Wal-Mart’s growing role in the world of healthcare retail. Attendees will gain unique insight into the company’s plans for products, services and potential relationships with hospitals and other healthcare providers.

"Attendance will be limited and we fully expect the event to sell out,” says Paquin. “We are already receiving requests to reserve space, and every indication is that we will run out of availability in the next few months,” states Paquin.

Pickles Market to Reach US$3.08 Billion by 2010, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts

Pickles Market to Reach US$3.08 Billion by 2010, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts

Global market for pickles is projected to grow moderately over the 2001-2010 period reaching US$3.08 billion by 2010. Amid competition from other food varieties, consumption of pickled foods is sustained by introduction of specialty pickles with new flavors and use as supplements with other foods.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) March 3, 2008

Pickling has been a constituent of various cultures across the world, a tradition driven by the need to preserve food. A wide range of pickles are currently available in the worldwide market, which incorporate flavors and texture that are unique to every geographical location. Globally, consumers are increasingly using salted and crispy pickles as toppings and supplements for common foods such as hamburgers, hot dogs and sandwiches. As people get more health conscious, demand for pickles with lesser salt content is forecast to rise.

The United States represents the largest market accounting for a share of about 32% of global pickles market (http://www. strategyr. com/Pickles_Market_Report. asp) in 2007, as stated by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. Latin America and Canada are forecast to emerge as the fastest growing markets. Finished cucumber pickles (http://www. strategyr. com/Pickles_Market_Report. asp) constitutes the largest product segment, accounting for an estimated 25% share in 2007. However rising demand for fresh cucumbers has contributed to the slow down in consumption of pickling cucumbers, especially in the United States. Global sales from the segment are projected to reach US$764 million by 2009. Europe represents another major market for pickles. Regional sales are projected to increase at a compounded annual rate of 2.6% over the 2001-2010 period. Germany represents the single largest market in Europe with sales estimated at US$113 million for 2007. Finished relishes market (http://www. strategyr. com/Pickles_Market_Report. asp) in Europe is projected to reach US$142 million by 2010. While in Asia-Pacific, where pickles are of enormous significance, the pickles market is projected to cross US$503 million by 2010.

Although the demand for fermented pickles is on decline, refrigerated pickles are finding favor among consumers. Refrigerated pickles retain their freshness due to the minimal processing associated with these products, as a result of which the pickle remains fresh and crispy. To capitalize on the health-aspect of pickled foods, manufacturers are offering innovative varieties of pickles that are beneficial for human health.

Key players profiled in the report include ADF Foods Ltd, Beit Hashita Assis, H. J. Heinz Company, Kraft Foods, Mt. Olive Pickle Company, Patak Foods, Pinnacle Foods Corporation, Premier Brands Foods Plc, The Global Green Company Ltd., and TreeHouse Foods, Inc.

The report titled "Pickles: A Global Strategic Business Report" published by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., covers major market dynamics, trends, issues, and competition pertaining to the market on a global as well as regional level. The report enumerates recent developments, mergers, acquisitions and other strategic industry activities. Product segments analyzed in the study include Finished Cucumber Pickles, Finished Horseradish Pickles, Finished Sauerkraut Pickles, Finished Relishes, Other Finished Pickles and Unfinished Pickles. Analysis is presented for established and emerging markets including United States, Japan, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Russia, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

Pet Obesity Continues to Grow in U. S

Pet Obesity Continues to Grow in U. S.

Nationwide study finds number of overweight dogs and cats increasing; owners of larger dogs and cats less aware of problem.

Calabash, NC (PRWEB) March 10, 2010

In the U. S., over 45% of dogs and 58% of cats are now estimated to be overweight or obese according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). The third annual National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Study, conducted in October 2009, found that from 2007 to 2009, the number of overweight dogs and cats increased by 2% and 5%, respectively.

“Obesity is now the biggest health threat to pets in the US,” states lead researcher Dr. Ernie Ward. “The costs of obesity in illness and injury make it the number one medical issue seen in today’s veterinary hospitals.”

Obesity rates in cats were highest at 21.4%; dogs were slightly better with 8.6% classified as obese by veterinary clinics. Obesity in dogs and cats is typically defined as 30% above normal weight. According to the study, 6.7 million dogs are estimated to be obese and 34.9 million overweight. The numbers in cats is higher, with 20 million estimated to be obese and 54.3 million overweight.

“These numbers, 34 million dogs and 54 million cats that are overweight, continue to slowly creep upwards. The frightening fact is that now pet owners are increasingly classifying their overweight pets as ‘normal,’ making the problem more difficult to address,” notes Dr. Ward. “If this ‘fat gap’ continues to grow, that is, when a pet owner looks at their chubby companion and views it as a normal, healthy weight, our nation’s pets will continue to suffer the consequences of obesity. I believe owners have this misperception because they are surrounded by fatter and fatter pets. Twenty years ago, these dogs were viewed as overweight. Today, pet owners view them as normal.”

When asked, 33% of dog owners and 46% of cat owners with overweight pets incorrectly identified their pet as a normal weight; 25% of dog owners with obese dogs reported their dog was normal while 40% of obese cat owners thought their cat was a normal weight. Interestingly, 33% of small dog (less than 23 pounds) owners thought their overweight dog was a normal weight compared to 41% of large dog (over 50 pounds) owners.

Owners of Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers were more likely to claim their dog was a normal weight when it was in reality, overweight. And 43% incorrectly identified their overweight Retriever as normal while only 33% of small breed dog owners underestimated their dog’s weight. In total, 46% of all Labrador and Golden Retrievers were determined to be overweight or obese. The study found that in general, owners of small breed dogs were more likely to correctly identify their dog as overweight than owners of large breed dogs.

“It’s important that pet owners understand the significance of even a few extra pounds on a dog or cat,” explains Dr. Ward. “For example, a typical 90-pound female Labrador Retriever is equivalent to a 186-pound 5 foot, 4 inch female while a 12-pound Yorkshire Terrier is similar to 223 pounds on the same woman. A 15-pound cat is equivalent to a 225-pound 5 foot, 9 inch male and a 20-pound feline equals 300 pounds on that man. Each pound on a cat is equal to about 13 pounds on the average female and 15 pounds on a male.”

“One encouraging finding was that 82% of pet owners agreed that pet obesity was a problem in the US. The challenge for veterinarians is to educate owners of dogs and cats on what a healthy weight actually is for their pet and offer weight loss strategies,” says Dr. Ward.

Treats continue to be the main culprit for excess weight. According to Ward, 90% of dog owners and 54% of cat owners responded that they gave their pets treats. “Even tiny treats pack a punch,” notes Ward. “Making matters worse, today’s treats are so loaded with sugar and fat I call them ‘kibble crack.’ Modern treats are literally rewiring our pets’ behavioral responses and creating cravings that go far beyond what is normal in many pets.”

Ward stresses that pet owners need to understand the impact treats have on their pets’ weight. For example, he equates a premium pig ear given to a 40-pound dog to drinking six, 12-ounce colas. “No one would sit down and drink six sodas at one time, yet that’s exactly what we’re doing when we give our pets these snacks,” states Dr. Ward. “Even a single, small dog bone treat given to a 10-pound dog is no different than a person eating two chocolate doughnuts. The truth is, we rarely stop at one dog treat. Give a few each day and you’ve fed the equivalent of a dozen doughnuts. No wonder we’re seeing such high obesity rates.”

The third annual National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Study was conducted using data collected by 41 US veterinary clinics in October 2009. In all, about 600 adult dogs and cats were evaluated. Approximately 8.6% of dogs were classified as obese and 36.7% as overweight. Approximately 21.4% of all cats were rated as obese and 36.5% as overweight.
