The FDA has extended the comment period on the Citizens Complaint filed by pharmaceutical giant Wyeth (Docket: 2005P-0411) against the sale of natural hormones ("bioidentical") by special pharmacists. Wyeth filed their complaint in October, 2006 claiming that both the bio identical hormones and the pharmacisits who filled the customized prescriptions posed a health hazard. After receiving 37,000 written responses, the FDA will accept comments until May 4, 2006.

The FDA announced that it would allow comments on the Citizens Complaint against bio identical hormones until May 4, 2006 although the original comment period expired on April 4, 2006. Wyeth filed their complaint (Docket: 2005P-0411) on October 6, 2006 asking the FDA to impose significant restrictions on consumer’s access to bio identical hormones. These natural molecules are prescribed by physicians in amounts and delivery systems which are customized to the need of each patient. Consumers, compounding pharmacists, physicians practicing bio identical and health freedom advocates are up in arms over this action by Wyeth. States, not the federal government have jurisdiction over compounding pharmacies. Health freedom advocates characterize Wyeth's move as seeking an extension of federal power on its behalf and attempting to eliminate a competitor in a failing market.

Health freedom advocates also fear that this is merely another step in the restriction of the consumer's right to make their own health choices whether or not they add to the pharmaceutical or medical coffers. Physicians and patients who have experienced the benefit of bio identical hormones fear that they will loose a powerful, gentle and effective option to drugs when they need to replace and regulate their hormone levels. During the final days of the comment period, the traffic was so heavy that the FDA's electronic comment system was reportedly overwhelmed.

Hormones are biologically active molecules which have body-wide effects at very low concentrations. Women's bodies make reproductive hormones throughout their reproductive lives but the levels fall sharply, changing their balance, during and after menopause. Natural hormones cannot be patented because they occur in nature so they are less expensive than prescription drugs despite the effort involved in compounding them individually. Synthetic and conjugated hormones, on the other hand, are patented and thus carry a higher cost to cover the expenses involved in developing and marketing the drug.

Small changes in molecules which render them patentable may also render them toxic or difficult for the body to process. Hormone receptors and enzymes are powerfully impacted by slight differences in molecules and many women find that their bodies react with difficulty to altered molecules leading to increased side effects and dangerous consequences to synthetic hormones. Bio identical hormones are exactly like the ones that a woman's body has processed over the years of her reproductive life and, when customized for her individual needs, are often accepted by the body with little or no discomfort and, supporters believe, without the risks posed by pharmaceutical, patented hormones. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is frequently prescribed for women to alleviate symptoms associated with menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, memory problem, mood changes, wrinkles, weight gain, etc.) and to prevent serious diseases (breast, colorectal and uterine cancer, heart disease, senility, osteoporosis, strokes, etc.).

HRT was studied by the NIH because of its anticipated benefits in over 161,000 women in a large 15 year study which began in 1991. The study, called the Women’s' Health Initiative (WHI) was an observational study designed to examine the effects of Premarin (conjugated estrogen derived from PREgnant MARes' urINe) or Prempro (Premarin plus synthetic progesterone or"progestin"). Because the WHI found that the women taking either Premarin or Prempro we at increased risk of breast and colorectal cancer, stroke, blood clots, heart disease, osteoporosis and a host of other serious disease, the study was halted years early (May, 2003) and women in the study who were taking either Premarin or Prempro received letters telling them to stop the medication. Wyeth provided both Premarin and Prempro to the WHI although it was not involved in the analysis or conclusions of the study.

Critics of Wyeth's challenge to bio identical hormones contend that the action is designed to bolster flagging sales of the "Premarin family" of drugs. According to Wyeth (http://wyeth. com (http://wyeth. com)), profits for the synthetic hormones declined by 68% between 2002 and 2004 ($2,072,000,000 in 2002, $1,275,000,000 in 2003, $880,000,000 in 2004).

Total profits for Wyeth in the same period have declined by 72% (2002:$4,447,000,000; 2003:$2,051,192,000; 2004: $1,234,000,000).

Since the only significant non pharmaceutical competitor for the HRT prescription dollar is bio identical hormones, industry watchers link the move with an attempt to regain lost sales and profits. Wyeth maintains that its actions are motivated by concerns about the safety of the natural substances and the way the prescriptions for them are filled. In its complaint it alleges that compounding pharmacists state that natural hormones are safer than synthetic, patented ones and that some have been "illegally" mass produced, rather than individually compounded. Therefore, the fresh acai fruit is not available outside of Brazil. If the fresh fruit was shipped to the US, for instance, it would be nutritionally worthless by the time it was purchased from a supermarket shelf.

Since buying fresh acai fruit outside of Brazil is not feasible, consumers must select from other forms of the fruit. Company spokesman Lynch says "We like freeze dried the best because the freeze drying process captures the nutritional properties of the fresh fruit." Lynch says the company's favorite freeze dried acai product is the product called Perfect Acai which is available through the company website.

In order to help consumers avoid rip-offs and time consuming entanglements, the company has been aggressively warning consumers to reject free offers for acai products, as well as free offers for most other products too since most of free offer promotions are essentially marketing ploys in which consumers requesting the free samples are unwittingly placed in monthly auto-shipment programs. These programs automatically ship products and they are often extremely difficult to cancel. Victims have reported great difficulty cancelling these programs as a result of hard to find customer service phone numbers, disconnected phone lines, and excessively long hold times. These free offer schemes often bury the disclosure about the auto shipment programs behind links titled 'Terms' or 'Terms and Conditions' which many people don't read. The company advises consumers to simply avoid websites promoting free offers altogether and to realize that it is not realistic to expect to get something for nothing. They have placed an acai berry scam alert prominently on the website to help consumers avoid these problems. When something is advertised as being free there is usually a catch. During the storm, SERG members waited out the worst of the weather in the Houston Emergency Operations Center (EOC) before heading back to the George R. Brown Convention Center to continue processing evacuees. Over the course of several days, SERG helped Houston officials track the movement of almost 8,000 individuals as they moved through temporary shelters, to long-term shelters or to healthcare facilities if needed.

"The first in SERG members worked around the clock until replacements arrived," said Robert Schwarz, SERG Leader and Field Services General Manager of Salamander Technologies. "We tracked evacuees, including individuals with special needs and pets, as they were sent to shelters. We provided the ability to search for evacuees, so that families could be reunited after the storm had passed."

Fifteen men and women from Hong Kong came together to make history by sharing their experiences of the University of London External System through a history-gathering technique called the 'Witness Seminar'.

Participants sharing their experiences of the External System during the course of the Seminar - held in Hong Kong itself - included representatives from a range of backgrounds such as legal practitioners, lecturers, engineers, directors of teaching institutions, entrepreneurs and British Council staff.

The emerging theme from the Seminar, held on Saturday 19 July, was the valued 'gold' standard of the External System degree with students and employers alike, as well as its immense flexibility and portability that allows students to study when and where they like.

Other witnesses emphasised the importance of studying for a degree, not necessarily with a view to developing a career, but adding value to an existing one, with law proving to be a popular programme for this purpose.

Rescue from failure was how Andy Chung described his experience of the University of London External System. Now a lecturer in Economics at HKU SPACE, Andy described his passion for Economics from an early age, but somehow failed to do well at A Level.

"This failure didn't stop my love for Economics, all I wanted to do was teach the subject", Andy added. Having completed a Diploma in Economics, he successfully pursued an Economics degree through the University of London External System and now with a Masters degree under his belt, Andy shares his enthusiasm for the subject with other students as a lecturer in Hong Kong.

Professor Robert Holland, who chaired the Seminar, said all the contributors provided a rich and colourful account of the University of London External System and its contribution to life in Hong Kong.

Summing up the Seminar, Professor Holland said: "It has clearly provided access and opportunity for people in Hong Kong that would otherwise not have been available to them. The System has helped change lives, contribute positively to the growth of the local economy and thereby the global economy, as well as fill a gap that existed here in higher education."

The Hong Kong Witness Seminar is the last in a series of three, held to celebrate the University of London External System's 150th Anniversary during 2008, which also marks 120 years of the External System in Hong Kong. The first two seminars, held in London, focused on the role of the External System in the UK and the Commonwealth.

The Witness Seminars have been pioneered by the University of London's Centre for Contemporary British History, which is part of the Institute for Historical Research. The Witness Seminars have proved successful as a means of capturing important historical information and personal stories for the record.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to a clean environment, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) and Amtrak announced today an expansion of Amtrak’s sponsorship of the SCA Community Conservation Program, a unique school year curriculum that provides environmental education and green jobs training to thousands of city youth from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.

The agreement expands an SCA-Amtrak sponsorship begun last year in the Western U. S. to a relationship that is national in scope covering SCA student engagement in Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, Dallas, Milwaukee, Newark, Philadelphia, San Francisco/Oakland and Washington, D. C. SCA also named Amtrak its “Official Alternative Transportation Provider” as part of the new agreement, under which Amtrak will provide reduced-cost transportation for eligible SCA student programs.

“Amtrak is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and environmental impact,” said Roy Deitchman, Amtrak Vice President, Environmental Health and Safety. “With Amtrak support, we know that SCA will be able to reach more young people from diverse backgrounds, ensuring the next generation of conservation leaders will be as inclusive as it is capable.”

The Lowry continues its commitment to exhibiting photography with this major exhibition of 200 historic – as well as little known - images from Depression America. The 1930s and 40s were decades in which interest was taken in the previously ‘hidden’ landscapes of poverty. LS Lowry‘s paintings of this period demonstrate the same impulse, and This is America complements the exhibition, Lowry’s Mean Streets of the 1930s and 40s.

The images in This is America are by eight photographers, all but one of whom worked on Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal "Farm Security Administration" (FSA) project. Some of the images displayed are world famous, others less well known, and the combined effect will give a new and deeper insight into the physical and human landscape of the Great Depression.

The exhibition will start with works by Dorothea Lange (1895-1965). Originally a fashionable portrait photographer, during the Depression

Lange started photographing the poor and unemployed who were on the streets outside her studio. A number of works from her "Migrant Mother" series will be shown together to show how the final work - arguably the best known photograph ever taken - was constructed using her studio portraiture techniques.

Ben Shahn (1899-1969) photographed broadly similar themes to Dorothea Lange, but his work is less formally controlled. Originally trained as

A painter, Shaihn also used an angled camera to "snatch" images of people who were often unaware they were being photographed.

A series of works from Walker Evans' (1903-75) book "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men" will show how Evans emphasised that dignity and pride can still flourish in conditions of great poverty. In contrast will be pictures by the only photographer in the exhibition who was not employed by the FSA project, Margaret Bourke-White (1904-71), in particular from her book "You Have Seen Their Faces". In these images the despair of poverty is much more in evidence than its dignity.

Arthur Rothstein (1915-85), who has been called "the Ansel Adams of erosion", shows how using inappropriate farming methods turned fertile

Land into desert. His works were carefully constructed - for example, he moved a skull to give a more dramatic shadow in "The bleached skull

Of a steer on the dry sun-baked sand of the South Dakota Badlands". His photographs of closed down banks in the Mid West can be said to summarise the Depression in a single image. Evicted sharecroppers and protesters along Route 61 bring the underlying conflict to life.

The imagery of conflict continues with Marion Post Wolcott's (1910-90) works. These include photographs of picket lines waiting for strike-

Breaking workers. Her work also shows how globalisation was already increasing in power - her images of the manufactured Pepsi-Cola logo

Contrasting with the hand-painted strikers' banners, her theme being the loss of the rural American idyll to big business. The titles often sum up the power of the work - for example "Houses which have been condemned by the Board of Health but are still occupied by Negro migratory workers, Belle Glade, Florida".

Russell Lee (1903-86) created images that show the plight and dignity of black families, including slum conditions in which they lived. In one image what at first appears to be a bombed out street turns out to be "merely" an image of abject urban poverty. Included in the selections of Marion Post Wolcott and Russell Lee will be colour photographs – overturning our view of this as a ‘black and white’ era

The exhibition ends with works by Gordon Parks (born 1912), the only black photographer who worked on the FSA project. His works follow a

Day in the life story of one person. The biographical portrait is of Ella Watson, a government cleaner bringing up 5 children on an income of $1080 per year. Normally the images would be of the people whose offices she cleaned - the government officials and men of power. This

Series brings the normally invisible Ella to life, and shows that her work is as valid and important as that of the unseen officials whose

Offices she cleans. The image of her posed with her mop and broom in a government office next to a US flag is one of the more iconic in the exhibition.

Mark Durden, guest curator of This is America for The Lowry, commented: "This show will present a distinctive selection of important documentary photographic images made during Franklin D Roosevelt's "New Deal". Including both canonical and lesser-known photos, the exhibition places emphasis on the social dynamics behind the documentary practices of eight photographers. This is America will also include lesser-known colour photographs, which radically disrupt our view of this period in American history, which tends to be linked to black & white images."

Midbrook Medical, the Jackson, MI, based manufacturer of custom fabricated medical equipment and decontamination systems has received a contract from the U. S. General Services Administration which will run through 2014.

The General Services Administration (GSA) acts as the purchasing agent for the U. S. Government. By entering into contracts with various businesses, the GSA is able to provide goods and services to federal agencies at pre-negotiated prices. As a GSA approved small, woman owned business, Midbrook will be able to market and sell its products to the federal government, military, and certain international organizations, such as the World Health Organization. “We take very seriously the opportunity, as well as the responsibility, to provide US government run facilities with high quality, economically competitive products,” says Midbrook Business Development Director Jamie Crowley. Midbrook Medical will also appear on the GSA Advantage website, allowing federal agencies to search for and purchase their products electronically.

Midbrook Medical has already obtained GSA approval on a wide range of medical equipment, including multiple styles and sizes of stainless steel case carts, instrument and utility tables, documentation stations and cabinets. ATP testing equipment is also available as part of the contract.

Having a GSA contract will provide several benefits to both Midbrook Medical and any interested buyers. First, the intensive approval process ensures that any products that a business wishes to list with the GSA are guaranteed to be priced fairly and reasonably. In addition, the contract allows federal agencies to purchase goods at a pre-negotiated price. This enables buyers to avoid the complicated and time consuming process of asking for and obtaining bids on the open market.
