New White Paper to Help Raise Awareness of Dangers of Sitting Disease

The White Paper was written in response to conclusions made by several research studies, including the American Cancer Society, that urge public education about the risks associated with sitting too much. By encouraging something as simple as standing in the corporate environment, companies and employees reap the many benefits associated with increased movement, including stronger bones and muscles, more balanced metabolism and even better concentration and creativity.
“For many years, office work in general, and computer work in particular, has inexorably been associated with the sitting posture,” says Carrie Schmitz, author of the paper and Ergotron’s office ergonomics consultant and engineering publications manager. “We are in a point at time when mobile computing devices, in combination with the new scientific understanding of inactivity physiology, make it possible for us to abandon obsolete work habits.”
Recent research conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of Ergotron revealed that full-time employees of large companies in the United States spend on average two-thirds of their working hours in a seated position and further, that 67% of this group wish their employers offered them desks that could be adjusted so they could work either sitting or standing.
