“The Chocolate Nerd is about finding the hippest chocolate and giving the reader an unbiased opinion about the product,” explains Powell. “I put taste first, then comes design, innovation and purity.”
The inspiration behind the blog was an uncanny obsession with luxury chocolate:
“Before the blog, I was sharing my chocolate randomly with complete strangers. I thought, there’s gotta be a better way!”
Powell isn’t the only one inspired by the latest take on the ancient confection. According to the New York Times, more and more consumers are becoming obsessed with the production and pursuit of better chocolate.
"Chocolate is the new olive oil," said a chocolatier to reporter Julia Moskin of the New York Times.
“There’s definitely a fresh approach to chocolate,” agrees Powell. “There’re tons of new, high end chocolate boutiques popping up in the hippest of neighborhoods with more of a focus on cocoa content, design and exotic ingredients.”
Better chocolate is what consumers want, be it for health reasons: cocoa is reportedly an antioxidant, or to quell an obsession with luxury goods.
“Chocolate is the perfect luxury,” explains Powell. “It’s indulgent, it costs less than the latest “it” bag and you’ll find it in chic places the world over.”
According to Powell, even huge companies like Haagen Dazs are taking note: “Their flavors are becoming more sophisticated to keep up with consumer needs.
