Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) March 3, 2009

In recognition of its workplace practices promoting employee health and well-being, WorldatWork (http://www. worldatwork. org) received the American Psychological Association’s (APA) 2009 Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award (PHWA) at a ceremony in Washington, D. C. on March 1. One of five employers from across North America to receive the award this year, WorldatWork was the sole recipient of the award in the Not-for-Profit category. WorldatWork, a global association for total rewards and human resource professionals, is a previous winner of the Arizona Psychological Association’s State-Level Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award, qualifying it to be nominated for the national award.

The organization’s stress management and employee wellness programs, its strategies for facilitating work-life balance and its efforts to promote employee recognition are several examples of the workplace practices that helped earn WorldatWork a 2009 PHWA.

The healthy workplace practices have reaped rewards for both WorldatWork and its employees. Thanks to the many opportunities to engage in healthy behaviors, employees have decreased body mass, cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose. The wellness programs also effectively reduce absenteeism and increase morale. In 2008, employee turnover was at a low 11 percent. Results from the organization’s most recent employee opinion survey show high marks for overall satisfaction, commitment, work-life balance and management support.

“WorldatWork is proud to be a leader in creating a healthy workplace. As the global association for human resource practitioners in the Total Rewards profession, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of creating a positive work environment where employees can thrive,” said Paul Rowson, General Manager for the WorldatWork Office and Conference Center in Washington, D. C.

APA commended the actions taken by WorldatWork to promote work-life effectiveness by offering benefits such as modified hours during summer, the ability to work from anywhere in the world through virtual work arrangements, and for regularly recognizing employees for their contributions to the organization. In addition, WorldatWork organizes National Work & Family Month celebrations each October, offers a privacy room, voluntary pet insurance and family events and activities that help keep employees balanced, so they are able to make the most out of the time they spend in the office and enjoy their lives outside of work.

“In these tough economic times, a healthy, productive workforce is more important than ever,” says David Ballard, PsyD, MBA, APA’s assistant executive director for corporate relations and business strategy. “Employers who embrace the connection between health and well-being and organizational performance are better able to develop a high-performing workforce that serves as a competitive advantage in the marketplace. WorldatWork has implemented a comprehensive set of practices that helps to create a work environment where both employees and the organization can thrive.”

APA’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Awards are designed to showcase the very best from among the award winners recognized by APA’s state, provincial and territorial psychological associations. Nominees are evaluated on their workplace practices in the areas of employee involvement, health and safety, employee growth and development, work-life balance and employee recognition.
