DuPont today announced that the breakthrough bio-based ingredient, Zemea® propanediol, has been independently evaluated by NSF International and now is listed in the CleanGredients® database as passing the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Design for the Environment (DfE) screen. Zemea® is produced and marketed by the DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products joint venture.

Zemea® is the first DfE-screened solvent to be listed in CleanGredients®. It is a 100 percent natural ingredient made from corn sugar and developed for use in the cleaning and personal care categories. Zemea® is a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based glycols in cleaning product formulations where the product's solvency properties, purity level, low irritation and excellent moisturization properties are benefits.

CleanGredients® is an online database of quality cleaning product ingredients. It helps formulators identify the ingredients they need to help them formulate greener, more sustainable cleaning products. CleanGredients® is a project of nonprofit institute GreenBlue®.

"We're excited to be the first solvent listed in CleanGredients®," said David Wood, product director -- DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products. "We share similar objectives with GreenBlue® around quality, sustainability and minimizing our environmental footprint. We believe this listing will enable more formulators to take advantage of the performance benefits of Zemea® and help them to streamline the process for achieving DfE recognition for their cleaning products."

DfE is one of the EPA's premier partnership programs, working with industry sectors to compare and improve the human health and environmental risks - as well as the performance and cost - of existing and alternative products, processes and practices. The DfE provides screens for safer chemicals to identify preferred ingredients. NSF International provides third party reviews for the U. S. EPA DfE formulator program. NSF International is the world leader in standards development, product certification, education and risk-management for public health and safety.
