The Review

University of Health Care offers the CD, Powerful Medical Device Sales, as the latest in its series of interactive learning tools for the health care industry. In this CD, Dr. Daniel Farb and Bruce Gordon pair up once again to provide a useful tool for medical sales representatives to learn the ins and the outs of the business. Dr. Farb contributes his medical expertise to the CD along with Susan Postnikoff and Cynthia Drake and other medical professionals, while Gordon produced the CD and created the graphics.

With 17 complete sections and numerous subsections, the CD covers virtually every aspect of health care that a sales rep could be exposed to. Following a succinct list of goals and an optional pre-test, the early sections offer general information, explaining the different types of hospitals, the types of medical personnel, and policies and procedures for prospective hospital vendors. These introductory sections expand into more detailed lessons including infectious diseases, occupational safety, the Advamed code of ethics, FDA regulations, HIPAA, customer management, and communication. Each section is presented as a separate module.

Produced in varying lengths, some are introduced with a brief video, while others begin with definitions, explanations and goals for the section. In an interesting mix of video, audio, text and graphics, the information in each section is presented to accommodate a variety of learning styles. Of particular interest in this CD are the videos presented by doctors, pharmacists, and other health professionals, who share their real world experience with viewers. At the beginning of each module, the authors offer a brief list of objectives. Considering the breadth of material, the stated objectives are helpful so students can identify the key points throughout the detailed, informative CD. Throughout the modules, the authors present multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and matching questions to test the student’s knowledge. Following the completion of each module, students are directed to a test access page where they can take a more complete exam on what they’ve learned. As each section is successfully passed, the student can print a certificate of completion.

Farb and his associates again offer students a thorough, easy-to-follow resource geared to a specific health care topic. The CD is top notch and will serve as an excellent resource to those training to become medical sales reps or who need an update on what’s new in the world of health care. It could easily become one of the most useful CDs in the University of Health Care’s product portfolio, bringing additional depth and understanding to the role of a medical sales professional.
