Laurie Caple BritainÂ’s longest serving and often controversial Ambulance Chief publishes his Memoirs
Laurie Caple who retired from Britain’s National Health Service in 1999 after a thirty seven year career, twenty nine of which were as a Chief Officer of various Ambulance Services in England, has published his autobiography titled “From Ambulances to Almonds”.

As BritainÂ’s youngest ever Chief Ambulance Officer when first appointed in 1970, he went on to manage several ambulance services, frequently at the leading edge of professional development in all areas of pre-hospital emergency care, before retiring in 1999 from the Northumbria Ambulance Service in the North East of England as the UKÂ’s longest serving Chief Officer of any of the primary emergency services.
His book offers a unique personal insight into the development of UK ambulance services from someone who was deeply involved, often controversially, in effecting a cultural change from a basic people carrying first aid transport service to todayÂ’s modern paramedic life support ambulance service now fully integrated into the modern NHS.
It is probably the first insider account providing a professional historical record of the Ambulance Service during the latter half of the 20th Century and Laurie draws on his own unique management style and experiences, and shares some hitherto unknown “behind the scenes” facts with the reader, who gains a fascinating perspective on the trials and tribulations behind some of the decisions which led to today’s modern paramedical ambulance service.
