HABLO Gearing Up for Workshops

HABLO Gearing Up for Workshops

HABLO, a program of People's Choice, Inc. will put on a series of dramatic presentations at local high schools and community centers.

San Bernardino, CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2006

Some friendly and entertaining teen-agers could be coming to a school or community center near you.

The teen-agers, who are the HABLO Peer Counselors, will give dramatic 30-minute presentations about issues facing teens today.

“While the presentations should be entertaining for others their age, they cover some important topics,” said Pamela George, assistant director for People’s Choice, Inc., the sponsor of the Helping Adolescents Build Life Options program, also known as HABLO.

“The presentations will address pregnancy prevention,” George said. “Information will be provided on various birth control methods, including abstinence as the 100 percent effective way to prevent teen pregnancy.”

The workshops also address the costs of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and diseases, as well as cultural awareness, decision-making and pre-employment skills.

These teens know their stuff. In August, they underwent four days of intensive training about pregnancy and STD prevention. They are to receive additional training throughout the year from the California State University San Bernardino Theater Arts Department, Learning for Life, Dameron Communications and Toastmasters International.

What’s more, they all attend the four high schools where they will work with other teens.

HABLO is working with Pacific, San Andreas, Cajon and Arroyo Valley high schools to give a series of six to eight presentations suitable for high school age audiences. The group plans to offer a slightly different presentation series, geared for middle school students, at the Johnson Hall Community Center, Waterman Gardens, and Nicholson Community Center.

HABLO will also provide participating students with resources for dealing with a pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease or other situation addressed in the training. These resources include a list of clinics that can offer confidential medical treatment.

HABLO’s program is through a grant from the California Department of Health Services, Office of Family Planning, which People’s Choice, Inc. has been a recipient of since 1997 to reduce teen-age pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases in San Bernardino County.
