New Jersey Charity Eva's Village Creates Team-Building Opportunities for Corporate Volunteers

Corporations routinely look to strengthen their organization by creating opportunities for staff to Bond with fellow employees, Boost the spirit of mission and Build a team effort. Eva’s Village, a model anti-poverty agency (http://www. evasvillage. org) in Paterson, New Jersey, has created a Corporate Team Building initiative which offers a unique opportunity for organizations to “Bond, Boost, & Build” through service to others. This well-organized initiative combines a tour of the extensive anti-poverty programs provided by Eva’s Village and an opportunity to volunteer in the Kitchen/Dining Hall serving over 350 homeless in New Jersey (http://www. evasvillage. org/shelters. shtml) and working poor individuals a hot lunch every day of the year.
Through this experience, corporate volunteers at Eva’s Village will also have a chance to: Bond with those in need, Boost their spirit of self-worth and Build a world of possibility and hope. Corporate volunteering benefits the corporation, the employees and the community.
Some of the corporations that have already participated in Eva’s Bond, Boost, & Build initiative are: Medco Health Solutions, NVE Bank, UPS and Atlantic Stewardship Bank. “What a wonderful experience we all had at Eva’s,” stated Nancy Rickenberg, Marketing Assistant, Atlantic Stewardship Bank. “We came away with a better understanding of Eva’s Village and the needs of the people they serve. They are truly an amazing organization.”
Eva’s Village, once a small soup kitchen (http://www. evasvillage. org/evas_kitchen. shtml) in Paterson, New Jersey, is now the most comprehensive anti-poverty organization in the state, with twelve programs. However, when it comes to volunteering, Eva’s Kitchen offers the best opportunity as an introduction to Eva’s Village and how they ensure that all guests are treated with dignity. To that end, diners at Eva’s Kitchen are seated and served at their tables by volunteers, rather than being herded into a “chow line”. After their meal, guests often converse with one another in the courtyard outside the dining hall. This space provides a quiet respite from the busy streets of Paterson and allows Eva’s clients to form friendships with one another. Through these relationships, as well as those formed with the kitchen staff and volunteers, the clients learn of the extensive resources that are available to them at Eva’s Village and may choose to take the next step – whether it is a shelter, drug/alcohol recovery (http://www. evasvillage. org/addiction-treatment. shtml), primary medical/dental care or activities at the only state funded recovery center in New Jersey.
Sister Gloria Perez, Executive Director of Eva’s Village is quick to remind that the vision of Eva's Village is to be a model social service organization dedicated to preserve and enhance the dignity of the individual. She says, “Many of our brothers and sisters have been demoralized by poverty and have experienced a level of misery that most of us have never known. In all our programs, we try to affirm the human dignity of each individual and make them feel loved and valued as human beings.”
Hundreds of people have donated their time, hard work and love to feed the hungry at Eva’s Kitchen — some for more than twenty years. Through the “Bond, Boost, and Build” initiative, Eva’s Village is trying to get more corporations to get involved. Originally a New Jersey soup kitchen, Eva’s Village was founded in 1982 by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma in response to the increasing incidence of homelessness in Paterson, NJ. But Msgr. Puma soon realized that another New Jersey soup kitchen was not enough.
