Barnes won the prestigious Ben Hogan Award as the nation's top collegiate golfer in 2003. In 2002, he won the US Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club and was the low amateur in the 2003 Masters finishing 21st after outscoring his playing partner Tiger Woods by seven shots in round one. Barnes has recorded nine top-10s on the 2008 Nationwide Tour. Ricky has been a member of the Nationwide Tour since turning pro in 2004.
